    I was given an Orchid for Mother's Day and it is beautiful. I did repot it right away it was sopping wet and packed tight with peat moss. It now has open 10 additional blooms since then. I have lots of houseplants and this was my first Orchid and I love it.

    I have always looked at the roots before purchasing because here orchids are more expensive. But I can say I have struggled more with problems that have cropped up, like spots on the leaves and one type of orchid had stem rot that died so quickly. I have just had a keiki I removed that had not enough roots but it's officially grown roots so I'm happy

    Hey Erika, I think a tip that would help is that you should always finish with a layer of bark. I know it seems like the new roots will have a hard time finding their way down Into the moss but it helps keep moisture in the pot for an extra 2-4 days! And I’m my opinion it is a bit more aesthetically pleasing. Love the work

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  2 года назад

      It is 100% prettier!! I don’t mind watering more often but when I see new roots coming in I’ll put the top layer on

      I just watched missOrchidGirls video where I think she said the reason to adding orchid bark on top of spagnum moss was to stop the moss forming algae on the top (since it need light to form) though bark does indeed look nicer than moss on the top 😃

    Girl, you should soak that orchid in half and half solution of hydrogen peroxide and get rid of that black moldy looking coloring or else it's just going to continue to permeate the roots that are left. And that solution you should be ready to repot the next day without any further problems.

      I was thinking the same. Also, while I hate wasting moss - I think that stuff should’ve been, at least, sterilized before reusing or just thrown out.

      Your video was wonderful. I have always heard that orchids are so delicate and I had no idea you could pick away to the Bare Bones like you did... I definitely am getting rid of some brown and mushy roots and there were two somewhat healthy routes that I actually thought were new stems because they were heading upward but now I realize they should have gone down into the bark and moss. Going to get some new bark and Moss and wondering if I could use any old bark or does it have to be special orchid bark?
      You have been incredibly helpful and hopefully my plant will live and I would love to see updates on your little project here I subscribed thanks again

    Do you have any phalanopsis planted in purely orchid bark instead of moss and barks? Is there a difference and which do you recommend?

    • @ViolentRainbow
      @ViolentRainbow 2 года назад

      In my opinion orchid bark on its own is not good for orchids, the store bought stuff can be too fine and really is more like potting mix with some chunks and it stays too wet and compact and doesn't allow enough airflow. It's good stuff but you really need to amend it with large chunky bark like pine or fir bark chips and perlite. I also never use sphagnum moss, I've found my orchids almost always get root rot when I use that even a small amount it acts like a sponge and holds too much water directly against the roots. It's much better to use just chunky bark and perlite, the water needs to run through the pot as if its empty and then dry out within a day or so.

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  2 года назад

      Yes I think I have 2 in only bark! Tbh I really like it, but it dries faster than the moss/bark mixture. It depends on your watering habits & environment. If you tend to overwater, bark could be a good solution. Also if you wanna save money & just use bark go for it. I do like the mix better though bc I am an under waterer

    Hello! I had a similar situation with an orcid recently. Its my first time caring for an orchid and based on what you described, it seems I over cut the roots. They were pretty rotted with a few having some green spots, but because the tops of the roots close to the plant were in bad shape I cut those off too. So now my orchid has no roots on the bottom, but there are two healthy new roots that appear to be growing, plus the leaves seem to be healthy and hydrated. The roots are above the moss growing sideways and there are no roots in the moss, but I am keeping the plant in a ziplock bag to maintain humidity. Do you think this orchid will be okay long term? Is it okay that the new roots are not growing into the moss?

    I added a comment but I don't see it so perhaps I didn't hit send but anyway this was super helpful I had no idea that orchids could be picked down to the Bare Bones like you did I thought they were so sensitive that I shouldn't ever do that but I'm so glad you showed me how. Do you have to use bark that is specialized bark or can it be any bark?
    Also I had a couple roots that I thought were going to become new stems so they were heading upward and I allowed them to but now I realize they were routes and they should be going downward. How do you know when something is a stem? I know that sounds like a silly question but I'm a real beginner

    Bonjour vous avez trop arrosée, les racines sont presque toute pourri, on ne met pas a tremper une orchidée toute une nuit😢. Une fois rempoter la laisser au moins 2 semaines sans arrosage et reprendre tout doucement l' arrosage habituel. Pour qu elle fasse de nouvelles racines il faut la mettre dans un sac transparent, gonfler le sac sans que cela touche la plante et la mettre devant une fenêtre. Vous pouvez humidifié la sphaigne de temps en temps et refermer le sac transparent et le regonfler avec une paille c'est plus facile. Bonne chance,🤞
