Patrick Macnee was an absolute legend....
He was in the same class as Christopher Lee. He said of him that he thought he'd be a diplomat.
@@ZooumbergDidn't they go to school together? And then were veterans & co-🌟s.
I could not agree more !
His Mother, Dorothea Macnee, died on 29th November 1984, just a month after this programme was broadcast. Here are Patrick's words about her appearance on the Show:
'Her mind was not what it was, but there was still the look of mischief about her. Tossing sticks and medics aside, Mama staggered onto the stage, where she was given a standing ovation. With great dignity, she inclined her head and acknowledged the nation. She’d no idea she was appearing on television. As the cheering continued and I clasped one of her hands in my own, I felt an enormous surge of pride. She really was a magnificent old girl.'
And then Ian Hendry a month later
Awww that’s so sweet!
@@rampageclover9788They were different people?!
@@rampageclover9788 I read about that. Ian was only 53! The cause of death reportedly was internal bleeding. Poor chap.
Patrick what an amazing actor a legend an Advenger, and a great cameo in a bond film. You were a hero thank u for your service. I enjoyed everything you have acted in You were a humble, wonderful man of good character. A class act you don't see in Hollywood anymore.
Macnee, as Steed, had a positive effect on everyone who ever saw or who has seen the Avengers.
Was big part of my life in the sixtys still watch them now, the avengers,.
I heartily concur! I have fond remembers of watching "The Avengers" over here on American Tv as a youngster in the 60s. So glad our networks showed the occasional British program (The Saint, The Baron, Man in a Suitcase, The Prisoner, This is Tom Jones, etc) .
It's lovely to see how much it touches patrick to have all his loved ones around him it's a great TV programme
True - an awful condition
My sentiments exactly !
And especially the love between Patrick and Diana (John Steed and Emma Peel). He had tears in his eyes during and after Diana said "much love" to him. I loved The Avengers with Diana Rigg playing Mrs. Emma Peel. i'm currently watching all episodes of The Avengers with Diana. The shows were about style, cleverness and amicable banter, and solving the problem in each episode. Great times, with Steed as a wonderful gentleman and Emma Peel as a beautiful, strong, witty, intelligent, and graceful woman.
UncleEarl97 I totally agree with you. After watching various Patrick Macnee interviews, I am totally convinced that he was hopelessly in love with Diana Rigg. When asked who his favorite costar was over the years, he wouldn't say, like the kind man he was, but we all know that answer!
UncleEarl97 I noticed what Patrick's daughter was wearing...a shirt with a picture of her Dad and Diana Rigg from the Avengers on the front. Must be her favorite duo, too.
He had tears in his eyes almost from the word go. He was a true gentleman, a good example of true British spirit that is sadly missing in this day and age.
@@christinebradley3306 I'm not so sure about "in love" as Patrick was married to his second wife then and being the gentleman he was both on screen and off, i doubt he would have let it get that far, but you are right he did have a favourite co-star but refused to say who. Like you i too am convinced it was Diana as i read where she felt the only REAL friend she had during working on The Avengers was Patrick. Rather than "in love" i'd say they both had a mutual respect for each other and loved each other.
Adore steed and mrs peel!!.2❤❤❤❤
This is so amazing for a TV show fan to see Mr. Steed with all the women of The Avengers. I recently saw a replay of all the episodes on a Memory TV channel as the epidodes started in the United States in the 1960s with Mrs. Peel. Patrick Macnee appeared as a guest on so many other TV shows, but was the English gentleman in real life as well. So great seeing his family. From St. Louis
Really nice to see Patrick MacNee’s life thru 1984 anyway and especially from his woman co-stars and Gareth Hunt from The Avengers. He will always be Steed, he played and was - so well.
What a charming, handsome , gentleman. I was in the RAF back in the 70's and would come back from town and get a hot pie and coffee in the NAFFI, and sit and watch the Avengers late at night. I loved the suits Steed wore, and Emma's different costumes. It was a surreal world they lived in but I still watch the series today. Patrick was quite unique, and Dianna was a perfect match for him.
Love the look on his face when his mum turned up. Dame Diana - RIP.
Indeed !
what a collection of true acting legends
Right On !
They all have such beautiful speaking voices.
Acting school.
Indubitably !
The epitome of the true British gentleman and all round ‘good chap’👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
I certainly have a nature to second that emotion !
Heartbreaking to see Ian Hendry at this point visibly dying from long-term alcohol abuse....you can also clearly see the pain in Patrick's eyes over the awful state his friend was in...
Sad but true. The Great Ian Hendry passed away only eights after filming this episode. So sad 😢😢
@@markwidlake7478 tragic and such a waste of potential. Easily up there with Michael Caine and Albert Finney, should have been part of that British invasion of Hollywood, cleaning up at the Academy Awards…fucking Brookside of all things was his swan song, playing someone 20 years older than he was because alcoholism had destroyed him physically to the point that he actually couldn’t play parts written for someone his age…
@@rampageclover9788 .....he thought " The Lotus Eaters * was his best showing on TV !
I don't think you can, he keeps the mask on, but he darts Eamonn Andrews a quick look at about 8:40.
Very sad. Heartbreaking. Such a fine actor.
Ian Hendry was such a great actor, it's sad to see his demise. He was only 53 but looks so much older.
Sad but true. What a young age to pass away. Like Patrick, Ian was a fine actor & charming chap!
What a gentleman Patrick Macnee was.
I could not agree more !
What an absolute gentleman. Widely respected yet as humble as anything.
That's for sure !
You can see the love and warmth between Patrick and Honor. Steed and Gale!
Yes indeed !
Have seen clips of this before. Thankyou for putting the full programme on here. Great to watch
It sure is fun to watch !

R.I.P Honor Blackman, brilliant as Cathy Gale

One of my favourite actors. Loved him as Steed in the Avengers and of course the new avengers
Also great in a view to a kill with Roger Moore in the bond movie

Great list of some great talents! Thanks for sharing! Sad that they're all gone!
These are People of Substance
Sadly, lacking these days.
Wow, just looked up info on his mum. Patrick was brought up in quite the alternative lifestyle, particularly for 1920s/30s Britain. He was brought up in a house of lesbians, including his mother and “Uncle Evelyn”. Fascinating.
I read about that too. What a fascinating life & career!
Patrick Macnee was / remains the best of British 🇬🇧
Pure class and a true gentleman ❤
So very very very true !
As we would expect, Patrick is surrounded by love.
Loved the New Avengers - Great to see he was so loved.
Diana Rigg is so Beautiful.
An incredibly lovely & talented lady !!
So sad Diana no longer here as well.
And Patrick,Gareth,Ian...😭🎩
Oops and Honor❤😭🎩
@@neilmcdonald9164I wasn’t aware Gareth Hunt had died!
Didn't I give myself a pat on the back, enough to dislocate my shoulder, when I first realized that Young Jacob Marley in 1951's Scrooge was portrayed by Patrick Macnee. So proud I was back in '67 or so.
R.I.P. Diana Rigg.
Tous encore tres beau et jeune , quelle plaisir de les revoirs j ai adoré cette série et ces acteurs ils nous reste encore Honor Blackman et Johanna Lumey et bien sur Linda Thorson dieu MERCI
I love Patrick macnee in the advenges and James bond and this your life
In that show Macnee drove a Rover 3500 SD1 and a flared fender Jaguar XJ12C, essentially a road-going replica of a Jaguar Broadspeed race car. The XJC (the C is for coupe

So sad to think that their nearly all gone. Remember watching this when it went out and so sad to see the terrible state of Ian Hendry, who would be dead within a couple of months.
Yes, v sad, I agree. Full story is told in my biography. www.amazon.co.uk/Send-Clowns-Life-Ian-Hendry/dp/1291270973/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=ian+hendry&qid=1600709249&s=books&sr=1-1
Love how Joanna was already jumping out of the Bentley long before it stopped 😊
I love this is your life
Poor Ian Hendry, the man didn't look at all well. This was broadcast in October 1984, he died Christmas Eve that year aged 53.
Indeed. He looks awful, poor fellow. And to be honest, he seemed drunk. Looked much older than 53. He didn't have much to say when they were chatting. But perhaps his condition didn't allow it. How sad.
Honor Blackman could indeed ride a motorbike and very well too. She was a despatch rider during the war.
Bless her heart ! She is sorely missed.
It’s all about the leather. Oh and great cheesy avengers episodes. I binge on them more now than ever.
Still in love with Mrs Peel.
My youngest sister was named after her by my youngest brother.
@@RWBHere wait what? How does that work?
08:30 Ian Hendry's appearance here is described in his biography, but he looks in even worse shape than I expected. (He died later that year) Very sad.
That huge belly was caused by liver cirrhosis. Basically, Ian Hendry drank himself to death.
I have been recently watching Ian in episodes from 1984 of Brookside, he played Marie Jackson's Dad. Not sure if it was the character or him, but the lines were slurred and hard to understand him.
Yes this programme was aired 24th October 1984,and Ian sadly died December 23rd 1984.from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage .
Ian Hendry's alcoholism was so much of a tragedy because he was such a good, such a special actor. You could see it in those early Avengers but also in Sidney Lumet's exceptional The Hill.
@@t.p.mckenna Yes, incredible actor. So sad to see him like this.
They 'surprise' him and he just happens to be impeccably dressed and groomed.
How very Steed/Macnee!
Lucky they didn't record it in California some years later - he was a nudist! :D
La mejor serie que vi en mi vida, sin duda
Amazing that people accuse Ian Hendry wrongly of being drunk but nothing is said about Patrick's mum, (who he had admitted in his book & on TV was an alcoholic) & she is definitely drunk. His autobiography is also a fantastic read.
Ian wasn't drunk as such but neither was he sober. He had a benign throat tumour for which he'd had an operation earlier in the year. All in my biography. www.amazon.co.uk/Send-Clowns-Life-Ian-Hendry/dp/1291270973/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=ian+hendry&qid=1600709249&s=books&sr=1-1
He had advanced cirrhosis of the liver, caused by alcoholism, and died less than two months after this broadcast.
What a gent!
A true gent .
Top Fellow!
Patrick, once told me a story about when Lorne Greene and he used to act on stage in Toronto, I do not remember the name of the troupe, he told me this around 1988.... Every time they would get a 'pittance' of pay, back then, Lorne would try to cajole Patrick into giving some of Pat's $ to him, to invest in a fledgling company. Patrick would always, politely, decline. Patrick said, to me, that when Lorne went off to Hollywood, for that "silly Bonawnza thing"(trying to get his accent) that Lorne was doing 'quite well'! "You see, Allen, that fledgling company was/is...........................................I.B.M. ! Lovely man, was Patrick Macnee! 🪐🌠
I was surprised tears for Linda Thorson. I didn't realise how much he loved her. 05:30

opening shots look like Chester Square in Belgravia
You're right! How silly of me. At first I thought it was beautiful downtown Hooterville. I kept waiting to see the Shady Rest Hotel.
Somehow you don't expect to see Steed becoming emotionally tearful. Doesn't quite fit the Avengers ethic.
08:03 Macnee had a bit of practice when Ian was honoured in 1978:
ruclips.net/video/BUZwX3jR77c/видео.html
A little (or maybe, not so little) contretemps between Macnee and Phillips.
Terry's car was parked there. See after they take off.
It's no coincidence; the road was closed to enable filming of the car's trip to the hotel. Closing roads in London is very expensive so ITV took the opportunity to film a Minder scene whilst the road was closed.
@Smirk Bigly I'm afraid that my knowledge of London's geography is poor but I'm sure a Londoner would easily identify street and hotel.
Rupert is the image of Pat.
The closed captioning leaves much to be desired
No Christopher Lee?
Ian Hendry sounds pissed up.
He was dying.
@@RWBHereBoth statements are true.
@@nkt1 I'm not surprised. I read he was a heavy drinker. Poor fellow. Looked 20 years older than 53!

Gareth Hunt sat unusually silent.
Gareth and Patrick had fallen out. Did you notice how stiff Gareth was during the drive at the beginning? They reconciled their differences immediately after the show. Gareth lamented their 12 month feud in an interview in one of the broadsheets (possibly The Telegraph) a couple of years later.

Joanna Lumley was the best
Ian Hendry was as pissed as a baby's mattress.
He was very ill and died two months later
I think he had just had a stroke around that time.
To me one of the best ones was with the Chopping karate robots
He does indeed seem drunk. And not well at all. Poor fellow would die months later. He looked so much older than 53.
@ He was an alcoholic, he was drunk in this video.
now we only have will smith and amber heard!
Not surprised Ian Hendry died 2 months after this aired, he's sloshed as a newt, slurring his words and his stomach is massively swollen, hard to believe he was only 53 and when you look at Patrick in comparison he was 62 here and looked 20 yrs younger than Hendry.
Throughout his acting career,Ian Hendry only had one personer,Ian Hendry. He wasn't an actor he was just played himself.
You could clearly see he was embarrassed by his mother and wanted nothing to do with her.
Can't really see where you're getting that from. She's clearly very elderly and frail by this point, and not up for running across the stage and doing a bear-hug, but Macnee (and his son) seem genuinely pleased to see her. There's a lovely interview - not on RUclips, but it's an extra on the 'Mr Jerico' DVD where Macnee speaks with love and affection of his mother (she's passed away by the time of that interview).
Yea I could see that by the way he kissed her a couple of times and held her hand.Stfu 🤡
He looks mortified when she pops up! Especially with the glass of booze looking smashed 😂
