I bought an old Heathkit lunchbox Twoer Radio to build as a button box, I want to make the one knob I’m keeping to control throttle, (FS17) and I can’t figure out how to rig up a little dc motor to it. Anz ideas? I plan on soldering my own stuff
can you use any switch that you can buy in a carshop for example?
What is the black toggle called? Does it auto center?
So I see A problem. I have never seen A game that uses a constant "on" they all work on A pulse even on/off switches only use A pulse signal. a constant "on/off" signal would cause a sticky key situation how did you work around that with out using momentary switches?
Great video, looking at building one myself, is it still going to work fine if I replace the toggle switch with a ignition switch and a button, like in ETS2 and ATS to start the truck?
Problem i find is more things in those games need to have an option to turn off the engine when button is not pressed because how it is now you would have to turn it off and back on to press the button again which hurts the realism
Will this plug and play work with the PS4? I am new at messing with electronics and not sure what is required to make devices to interface or compatible with the PS4. Thanks for the great video and for your time.
pc only as far as I know
Can i use 2 boards together?
Great video man! Keep up the awesome work. I've already started my Amazon Wishlist ;)
where did u get the box?
I have put two Toggle switches on my box one for wipers and one for lights to turn them on I have to flick them up to the on position to work, but to turn them off I have to flick it to the off position then back up to the on position, to turn back on I have flick to the off position downwards and then back up to the on position which is annoying. I have used the same zero delay board as you. How can i change it so that just flicking the button up tturns them on and flicking down turns them off. seems the off position has been made rredundant. Secondly I have a button with three pins one is for the button to be illuminated how can I connect it as the wires only have two connections.
For the first issue, that is something I have been asking the game developer for, there really is nothing you can do for certain functions until the game maker makes the function momentary, for instance in ETS2 the jake/engine brake can either be toggle or momentary in the menu, by having it momentary it will only work while the button is depressed which you can use a switch for. The emergency brake however is on a toggle, I have a pull switch, essentially I have to push it in and pull it back out to turn it off, if it were momentary in the game menu then it would turn off when i push the switch back in just like in real life. As far as the illuminated switch you would need a separate power source or there are apparently different encoders with a 3rd power pin. So the separate power source would be a battery with a switch for instance. Hope that helps.
If you were to build two of those and plug them into the same pc, will the pc treat them as the same board or will you have 24 buttons?
24 buttons as far as I know, just think of plugging in 2 controllers, same idea
Is it possible to make axial or variable buttons with that board?
Artur Franceschini unfortunately no that would be more of an aurduino board this is meant for like an arcade machine.
Nice vid thx kind inspired me of building my own though I have a quick question, when picking up some switches/toggles some that I want to use mention a higher voltage, that doesn't apply to these switchbox projects right, those are the maximum usage oprational voltage, right?
youmasenchi it only needs to see a connection, simple as that
Sweet then need to wait for my stuff from China and can start this project :D thx again
Thank you. Those boards allow 12 things, does the ON-OFF-ON switch use two? I wanted 4 of those and 8 normal buttons.
Toggle switches use 1 unless it is a multi position, i will give you a problem example. In american truck sim the parking brake does not have a momentary option like the exhaust brake/jake brake does. So when i switch on the jake brake it works until i turn the switch off however the parking brake is only a toggle in the options so you would have to flip the switch multiple times just to do a simple on off. Momentary may not be as cool but may be a type of switch to look into. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dindustrial&field-keywords=momentary+toggle+switch
+ReadySetGame Wow thank you for the replay. Yes that makes sense, basically what I'm after is a switch that goes back to the middle. But the up and down are just two buttons. So for example, changing brake bias up or down. So I guess I'd need two wires for that? Which means I could only fit 2 of those kind of switched and 8 normal buttons?
+Nick Curry yes a 2 way momentary acts as 2 switches
@@ReadySetGame87 Sorry to revive this after 4 years, but I have the same question as Nick. I would also like to use on/off/on 2-way momentary switches. I think the second one you install in your video is one like that. My question is: how do you connect such a switch. Don't switches like that have 3 pins, but you would actually need to connect 4 of those clamps?
thnxx buddy
what kind of momentary switch do i need, a push to make or a push to break?
to make connection
Nice video mate. Is it possible to use a multiple usb encoder board in one pc and use itnas a different function in game?
Hey, good video, this will motivate me to make my own button box. 2 Questions.. Where can I find good plastix boxes to use for my bB ? Can I make displays working on this zBoard ? Especially the gear indicator ?
Thank you, I am glad it makes you want to build one, I found my plastic box at radioshack but you can find them from so many places, just google "project boxes". As far as the gear indicator that would be a whole other ball game as that requires an arduino board and programming, same for speedometers and such which at this moment is beyond my level of know how. I hope this all helps let me know if you have any other questions.
Hi, I have made a button box using an old usb keyboard’s circuit board, they boards are tiny small and very very difficult to solder onto, I am in the process of trying to find user friendly circuit board that will work with the PS4 in Project Cars 2 just like the Keyboards circuit board dose. Dose this work with the PS4?
Barry McAully no unfortunately, controller is the only way for console
like i said above, I used a Keyboards circuit board to make my button box and that works great with the PS4 and Project Cars 2, the only issue is having to solder onto the small keyboard circuit board, this is why i was asking if this type of board that you have used in this video will work.
the PS4 can now identify keyboard buttons and in the game on Project Cars 2 you assign the buttons (keys) to what ever you like in the game for instance headlights or window wipers or break bias etc...
Barry McAully i understand that is why i said no it can't, only tip i can give to solder to a controller is to rough up the contact point
I'm new to sim racing and am currently on Xbox using a thrustmaster tx set up with the th8a, t3pa and the 599xx wheel add-ons. I really would like to have a nice hand break and button box but I can't seem to find much of anything for the Xbox one. If anyone has any advise please let me know.
well unforunately xbox and playstation do not have the abilities of just getting drivers for anything like pc does, the closest i have seen anyone do is rewire a button internally, reroute it with wires to a handbrake they made, this way you are still using a compatible controller and it thinks you are hitting a button on it but really the button is wired to a make shift hand brake.
ReadySetGame oh ok, thanks for the helpful information. I'll be sure to look into that more. Keep up the good work man, cheers.
Thanks happy to help when i can
Hi there I just built my button box last night. I have one of the joystick motherboards you use in this video (exact same) I have wired all the connector wires in mine are red and black instead of blue and white. However when I plug it into the computer the computer recognises it as a usb game pad. Says it's ready to use and then when I go to properties it says it's not functioning properly and won't allow me to test the keys.
If I go into a game....say farming simulator and try and map the keys as soon as I select what key I want mapped it comes up with key press 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 as in all the keys on the button box are being pressed in at the same time.
Mine are all momentary sketches with 4 small on off switches and one on off key switch
Any ideas? Help?
Tom Hay in all honesty it is tough to say, i would go into device manager and uninstall the driver, unplug and re plug which should reinstall it. Don't be surprised if you get a bad board, they are mass produced out of china so there is always a possibility
I want to build my own button box but how would i wire a three pin toggle switch
Jason Aw if it is a 2 position switch then you use the same negative for both and positive on each end using 2 button inputs.
hey! wonderfull video! you have the ETS2 controllers config or a video working on ETS2/ATS?
Thanks, i don't have one but later maybe i can throw together a quick video over the weekend
Hello, excellent video, at the moment I am making a button box thanks to this video, but I would like to know if I can add more buttons, that is if I can use the other connections or only those that you used in your video
Marcos Mereles glad you enjoy the video, i can only think if there is a usb encoder with more inputs but this is all i found so far. I want to look into raspberry pi's soon and those should be able to have tons of craziness you can do.
I think I could not explain very well, I'm using the same USB Encoder that you used in the video, I mean you used the 12 main connections, what I want to know is if I could use the other 4 side connections for Add more buttons
Marcos Mereles i mean technically i guess you can, i did not have the wire for it but it is for a joystick so you would have up down left and right
Thank you very much, your comment has been very helpful to me, I finished putting up my button box and it works perfectly! Thank you very much. Works perfectly
No problem glad to hear of it, eventually as the channel grows i would like to do a thing where people send in pics of their creations then me and a co-host talk about them.
Hi,
Just last weekend I bought my first gaming PC specifically for iRacing and watched this tutorial for a button box. I have just one question;
is it literally a case of plugging it in and Windows automatically recognises as a device? I've just had a major headache getting a 3rd party xbox one controller to work!
Thanks in advance.
Darren Harley yes it is totally plug & play, xbox controllers always needed a seperate driver. thanks for watching and congrats on your first gaming PC.
ReadySetGame Fantastic. Thanks for the quick reply. I'm ordering as we speak! Great channel by the way.
Darren Harley thank you more coming just have to come by more money for projects but i will keep em coming.
that's awesome...
but I didn't understood the way you attaches the buttons to the box
.
..means so perfect..
.and what did you tightened it with??
Hardik Singhal switches are self explanitory when you buy them, mine have a nut and washer that unscrew.
here is a picture of a button up close with the nut and washer taken off, the switch has threads that the nut will thread onto after putting it through the hole you've made pbs.twimg.com/media/C10iif5XgAA7M19.jpg
may i use your method to make a better/updated version
of course I support diy communities all day every day.
thks
Hello ReadySetGame, Nice video, I am planning to make something like a "control panel" for KSP, there's a lot of information in internet but most of it use Arduino, Raspeberry and other complicated methods, and to be honest I'm not really good at programming (and I do not have much time to learn about it), I only wanted to do something easy so my child could play the game in a little bit more realistic way and this seems to be a very good option. As far as I understood I can add a joystick, but do you happen to know if a throttle can be added somehow? Thanks!
wait, Those big switches...
The one big switch you put on looks like its 12 volts. Is it? They're the only ones I can find. The momentary buttons are easy but that one big switch is 12 volts but a usb cable only haas 5. Can't you blow it?
+k voltage is of no matter on any of these it just has to do with opened and closed circuits like a button, if there is a light on the switch you must find an alternate power source to run the led.
ReadySetGame ahh ok!
very interesting
Love this. What USB encoder do you use? I was going to get a Leo Bodnar BBI-32 but want something cheaper. I built a box for my flight sim but have yet to get the USB card to make it actually work. Right now it's just a pretty box of buttons and switches and knobs, oh my!
mine is very basic I would have to look up what company but it's from china and only 12 buttons with joystick inputs as well with mode start etc. it sounds like and arduino board and some programking for your setup
I tried the Arduino actually, it doesn't support USB in a way that recognizes it as a device. The most I can do with an Arduino in my panel is to use t to control LEDs that turn on when the switch or button is pressed. Other than that it can't communicate.
+Chris Brantley ill am surprised I have seen arduino boards do everything from speedometers to buttons.
Yeah, they control everything like a champ. But it can't be read by the computer as a device. The closest I can get is making it sort of a keyboard emulator. Where pressing a button sends the computer a character and that character can be mapped into the game as if you were pressing the keyboard. It does the trick, but poorly, and it limits me to just push buttons, no knobs or sliders or anything like that.
wil the USB Encoder work with the original xbox ?
Unfortunately no game consoles lack the ability to get drivers like windows does, this is also the reason why 1 steering wheel can work for 1 console and not the other but they all work on pc.
hi how do you get buttons with leds in them to work
You have to use a 3 pin board instead of a 2 pin, the usb encoder board
thanks for reply do you know where I can get one that is not from China and also how would you connect a switch which has 5 pins
Amazon is where i got mine not shipped from china, 5 pin switch is most likely multi position switch, it probably has 2 positives and 2 negatives, each position except off is a button, for instance my 2 position switch uses 2 different buttons on the board.
Fin shute you can get them on ebay. mame Led encoder
please do a tut on how to make a key ignition for games to start your engine in game!
I was going to order a key switch for it. They work the same as any button. If I do get one I will throw a video of me adding it in.
ReadySetGame thanks!
Can you make a video when you set it up to a racing game?
i do not have a setup at the moment making a new one which means more diy videos...yay but i will when i do a new setup.
Does this work for Xbox one ?
Where can I find the BIG On/Off switch?
Awesome video by the way!
thank you and a big toggle switch can be found at redioshack, auto parts stores and online.
+ReadySetGame Thank you very much! Is it called something? I am looking at Ebay right now, all the other stuff is purchased now - I just need that huge switch! :)
Sorry for my bad english btw
+August Adelgaard just called a toggle switch you may have to look at pics and dimensions to tell the size but it is called a toggle switch. You're welcome glad I could help.
Some decoders have 2 pins and some have 3 pins to plug into the board for the buttons. What is the difference?
I have only seen 2 pin encoders but not sure on decoders but if you look up zero delay usb encoder they should all be 2 pin.
+ReadySetGame i think the three pin connectors if you are attaching buttons and switches that have led in them, so the extra pin provides 5v power.
+Cartoonman154 I was thinking the exact thing. Im gonna look into it when I get home later
+ReadySetGame cool stuff.

So I found a small fan with the same pins you get with the wires, I'm still waiting for the board to come but is it possible I could put this small fan inside the box to extract heat? I know it won't get hot but i just think it's call to have a fan inside xD
imgur.com/IDy2BiJ
+k they are not pwered just the board is but no power runs through the switches/buttons
Will this work on consoles?
Michael Watts unfortunately not, only pc
wow! i'm defently gonna try this out. i only have to translate the parts to Dutch because i have no idea right now but thank you so much! + 1 sub and a like for you!
if i have problems could you help me then?
kind regards
kas
I can surely try
Ok i don't get this at all, the red wire has that metal thing with the two sides rolled in but it only fits on two pins and not one even when i try to use the pliers on it...
it could have to do with your switches your using....no big deal there is no positive and negetive. all you have to do is either splice the wire, most switches have a hole in the posts, wrap the spliced wire through the hole and a little electrical tape and bam there u go. the more pro route is soldering all the connections on the switches. the rolled edges was a little hack that worked for me
ReadySetGame alright thanks I have a soledering iron so its fine thank you
+k no problem thanks for watching.
Wicked how to also
thank you
it works whit ps4??
mister x pc only sorry
I have a 5 dollar usb numpad. Just label the keys assign as necessary. Much easier.
It is but way less immersive especially if you have a full cockpit setup
I have a full cockpit setup and it's fine. A lot of people can't afford a box Thought it was worth mentioning for those who haven't thought of it.
@@lazer51 hes talking about immersion, not functionality, as this box ticks off both unlike a numpad which ticks one. Plus making one yourself isnt actually that expensive, you could do it for 20-30 bucks
Just orderd some of these for a really low price. Now just wait 2 months till dilvery xD
Good ol' chinese shipping
METALLICA RULES!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
yup its me lol....and look its u 402
+ReadySetGame thats fuckin awesome DIY.!!! I be in your next stream m8!
Yeah I only play American Truck Simulator so looking to build my own box so I don't have push all button on my wheel lol
i just used old keyboard pcb
Did you put a key ignition switch on your button box
Only reason i didn't is because euro truck and american truck sim you would have to turn off and on the switch every time so it would act like a button unlike the engine brake which works on momentary so it only turns off when the button stops being pressed which is why i put in a switch and it works correctly.
Will it work for ps4?
you're talking to fast!
so basically, wire up the wires they give you, and connect the other end to a button, then put in a box, make a hole for them and the usb, etc. That's it?
+k you have got it....it is as simple as that hense easiest diy button box
