Another tip: does this culture trade? If so, there will be cultural diffusion. If you have a culture that trades a lot, then the clothes are going to have similar elements from different cultures. If this culture is more isolated, they are likely to be more unique
I want to further mention that people closer to the equator (warmer) typically wear more colorful clothing which better match with the environment; ones who are farther away (colder) wear more muted colors or shades of black and white.
do you mean equator (line around the centre of the earth, where countries closer are generally warmer compared to those further away)? hemisphere just means half a sphere.
Not always. Famously the medieval (and even before) in Western Europe was incredibly colourful, with reds, yellows, and greens coming in countless shades, and that was only the common colours. It's more of a modern idea that the Northern Hemisphere was filled with muted colours, same way the victorians believed all knights armour was a shining white (and sanded down armour they found accordingly) Now, dyes made from rare clays and metals did appear more commonly as you reached the equator, especially sapphire blue and shades of purple and pink, but that was more common for nobility, not the common people
This actually really helps. I’ve come to the conclusion that in the main location of the story, the people wear light amounts of thin clothing, as they live in a rainforest. The clothing is made from purple sheep wool, as this area has a magical effect that makes small creatures (about the size of a sheep and smaller) born there purple. The wool is hard to obtain in the northern part of the country as the rainforest is much more dense there, so the clothing is more expensive. They are usually kept purple but are sometimes dyed into blues and reds for ceremonial purposes such as weddings or religious holidays. Men are refrained from showing their legs as it’s considered bad luck for men to do so (relating to stories about the founding of the country and to keep them safe from poisonous plants or small animals, though women who hunt and gather also partake in this tradition as well while hunting. It’s seen as good luck for a hunting team to be equally men and women) and women usually don’t show their stomachs unless pregnant because it is a sign of modesty along with the men’s rule. Other than that it’s socially acceptable to show your back down to your feet and in some situations the chest since it’s not seen as something sexual (the stomach is viewed as such though which is why it is only shown when carrying a child which involves those acts to do. Showing your stomach when not pregnant is considered rude in the south but is a sign that you wish to have a child in the north. Female children under the age of 22 are not allowed to show their stomachs for this reason, and neither are boys when it comes to the legs. Men over the age of 22 who show their legs any higher than the mid calf are seen as scandalous and looking to die on their next journey, often being publicly shamed by others or even outcasted until they cover up as the best death in this culture is death beside family and this implies that you’d rather die in the middle of the woods alone). Social classes aren’t a big part of life, as most people are the same class, so most people wear the same clothing. But the local leaders (there are twenty throughout the country) wear gold and elemental crystals, and middle class can only wear one if it was a gift from the leader or their family. The beauty standard differs between fae and humans, as they lived harmonious here until they were invaded by outside forces, but it’s the same for both genders. Crooked/gapped teeth, light wavy hair, tall athletic build, and long hair is the beauty standard. Both men and women grow their hair out and never cut it unless absolutely necessary (like it’s caught on a branch and they can’t get it out or if someone is holding you by they hair with murderous intent).
Are there more than one religion in the area? If so, do they fight over beliefs, do they co-exist, or do they agree on some things but clash over others?
In my superhero world I thought it would be a fun idea if at some point in the past someone who was like the original super strength guy had such a tough fight that it forced England to become part of America. This is because I live in England but a lot of superhero shows take place in America so I thought it would be fun to mix the two
One of the best instances of world building I’ve ever seen was “The Staircase” in tillie Walden’s “on a sunbeam.” It’s a planet considered uninhabitable by the entire universe, except for the few thousand that live there. The descriptions and lore about it are minimal, but so amazing that in just a few lines you get a perfect image.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this video. This really helped me create a whole world for my characters and they actually look better. I love this video thank you!
A big part of a group of characters in my story is that they’re only able to work at the circus due to ableism in the workplace. As such, their attire is usually made by hand from cheap materials and worn as long as possible so the performers often perform in tattered clothes
I thought about this when making a race of people who live in lava. I made the extreme heat integral to their physical functioning but I don’t want 20% of the humanoids of this world to be basically inaccessible to everyone else. so, via magic, they weave cloth by concentrating sunlight into a tangible thread, thus imitating the heat of the lava and making it so they can walk around outside the lava if they wish. Because it is so hot, there can be no buttons or anything like it, so the style of garment is solely determined by knots. The different styles of knots determines how it looks.
FINALLY! We needed this one! tysm 😭 hey Charo, can you make a Character Design video for cartoonier and simpler OCS? Mist off the designs you show are SUPER COOL but they dont fit well with most cartoony styles, tysm :)
You know one aspect I'd really wanna see be touched upon in this series is Transportation. Transportation is a bit of a wild card since it has a lot of variables to it, primarily Technological Advancement, and Geography.
For mine, it's actually very different I've got this whole AU involving a Virtual Dimension that can connect to real worlds, and each real world is different. Their virtual counterparts can be created as well. Each one is different! You never know.
yeah !! i did some studies (i do lots of things for fun and because i think its funny to go on long rants about some random thing out of nowhere on a five word comment) on what areas have different languages for different reasons, some places have stone carved text and use a certain type of lettering to make it easier to write, and some places use leaves to make text so they make the letters different (iirc it goes along the lines of the leaf but im not sure.) so if someone has a place with lots of stone or other things they can find a way to make it different !! some fantasy place i have takes place in my ‘book’ (let me try to sum it up but i cant sum up text at all) that has two people who mention wanting to be ‘astronauts’. they remember it a while later and go to a train that can take them to places in space, different times, and other places. one place is a mountain, with a cave that leads to a small ‘waterfall’. if you go through it, youre met with a sky place with no full night and more of a darkness. the sky gets an indigo tone and the clouds become less opaque in this ‘night’. it lasts for three to six ‘hours’ until everything is accessible. theres another cave thats the same until the entrance, which there is no waterfall and a very clear bright pond with a thin lilypad. you step on that and get access to the main placem which is much bigger and has multiple levels. anyways i think thats enough writing about the book im gonna talk about the language..they use triangles a lot in their language, and straight lines are common. curved round lines are for other places such as swamps, forests, and other dense areas with round rocks that they write on. im gonna stop writing and maybe edit it later if i see this comment again !!
Also something to add is funeral wear! What colors are appropriate or inappropriate, also how modest are they supposed to be? What makeup is suitable based on what's available? Traditions for funerals may be apart of the clothing they wear.
1. They live in Starlands (a country I made up because why not.) 2. Its extremely cold. 3. Quite Humid 4. Mud because they dont really have many streets. Villages actually. 5. Yep that is the case. Although many years ago, they discovered that silkworms and moths lived there so they worked around it and made silk through cocoons but make sure that the species stays alive 6. Silk, wool, flower petals, and sticks (silk for royals clothes, wool for average clothes, flower petals for royals decoration and sticks for hats) 7. By trade? Yes because they trade with Australia because thats the closest country to them. Although, they mainly trade food and animals so they dont really exchange materials 8. They have two different types of clothing which makes it easy to tell which are higher class. The rich as in royals. The royals has silk gowns with flower petal decor. Any dead moths they find will be taken in and they put the wings on the crown. For the average people or poor, they wear wool clothes. if they’re richer than normal, they wear silk. They wear straw hats and rings or bracelets are made of grass. 9. For boys, you must NOT show arms. It’s inappropriate to their culture. You cannot show stomach either. For girls, you can never show your hands to anyone but your partner and it’s considered inappropriate to show your mouth when not eating or drinking. 10. For boys, whats considered beautiful is a bun in hair, no hair on arms or legs and a beard, you also would have to be very strong. For girls, you should have your hair out or in braids, look very delicate, long hair and green eyes Edit: bro I didn’t expect to write that much 😭
As a history nerd, I like to base my worlds and creations I come up with in my head off of Real world Empires and such. I once thought up a kingdom which was a mix effectively between the HRE, some medieval nations, and mixed some native American culture into it. I mainly base things like that for two reasons. 1. Real cultures are super cool and need more attention occasionally. 2. It helps me to remember the things I learn. If I learn about a monarchy i'll likely base a nation or culture in a world off of it to help me contain my knowledge of sed monarchy
for world building i have reptilian people who are culturaly drawn towards magic hotspots, that tribe settled in a cold region, so i balanced lightweight and comfort with heatresistence... resulting in brighly dyed fur wearing dragonkin, i looked for alpine wild animals and came across a goatbreed with dense fur. vanitywise for dragons, they ornate with pretty gems or metal mined from the mountain. i ended with bright colored tibetan vikings...
As someone who wants to be a writer, this series is perfect for me thank you! My world building is about a cat society (based on how real life cats behave) so some of these I already worked out. Since they already have fur they do not wear clothes (Aside from collars which show their social status.) and no body part is deemed innapropriate. The beauty standard is similar for both genders, they find cats with long soft fur, large size and strong genes to be the most attractive (Though it matters a bit more with males because they can pass their genes more frequently.) Still working out a few details though.
For mine: its temprate, but differs by variant (they are cat people) so it makes sense for snow leopards to have thinner clothes than servals, they are going to be walking on metal mainly (they live on a starship) they wear a lot of satin, and occasionally irken skin if the starcat is of high rank, in starcats, its inappropriate to show your crotch in public, they have no beauty standards lol
In my world it’s basically a the earth in medieval time ! ( is it was basically a test for the elders to find if one planet was better at developing than the other and earth turns out to be the best ! ) so a lot of their culture is similar to earths ( each kingdom shares 2/3 countries they are based off too ! ) but some richer people have more modern outfits - the gods have the most modern ones as they are from the earth to help develop the planet ! ( it doesn’t have a name yet Ive been calling it xanadu for now lolz ) and a lot of the normal peoples clothing has the same or similar colours to their environment e.g. the Tribes of the earth kingdom wear green ! Their army uniform also shares the same colour to show where they are from ! ( red - fire , blue + yellow - water , grey - air , yellow - time + reality ( their leaders got married many generations back so they are known as a single kingdom ) , now earth is a hard one as they don’t technically have a army but small groups of fighters which hold their tribes symbol on it , and the last one which has a name but I forgot is black with all of the other kingdoms colours on it ! ( they are basically the most powerful kingdom and the richest ) The beauty standards are similar everywhere ( but the earth kingdom I’ll explain later on ) , the richest have clean faces , long hair , and large horns / wings / tails / fins / other to show they are powerful while the earth kingdom shows that tattoos ( leaders of tribes have tattoos of their symbol on their faces ) , dainty wings/horns/ etc etc are wanted and a form of plant ( tattoos , a actual plant or other ) It is probably gonna change later on ty for reading my rant !
Decided to share the culture I thought of: They live in a mountainous environment which is usually around 20 degreees celcius, but since most mountains are volcanos, their peaks can be up to 50 degrees (not during an eruption). It is very dry, and the terrain is mostly rocks and sand. The materials near them are rocks and sand, so traditional clothing is made out of strips of indium, but while climbing mountain peaks they wear tungsten suits. In domesticated areas they wear cotton imported from a nearby nation, which also matched the economical divide between city people, who tend to be richer, and mountain people, who don’t have much money due to a low demand on rocks at the moment. The stomach, arms and neck are traditionally rude to be exposed, due to risk of injury, however the domesticated areas don’t really care as it isn’t a threat. The beauty standard is to have dark hair and eyes, and skin that’s a tan to dark brown colour in both the mountain and city, and the mountain people also prefer shorter people (so they can get through cracks in rock) with long, strong legs (to climb better).
Btw for clothing and climate. If they live in a desert, historically that ends up with lots of very covering but very light cloth, to cut down on sunburn while not overheating. Meanwhile in rainforests, thats when you get folks with not much on because again hot as well as humid, and clothes don't ever get properly dry (lots of humidity+sweat+fairly frequent rain) plus their in the shade most of the time off of the trees.
OH! That reminds me of one I made ages ago. They lived in a swamp and wore a sort of leather bellbottoms from fantasy frog skin that let them inflate along the ankles allowing them to effectively glide along the waters surface like they were ice skating. And they had some sort of semi-aquatic fox pets that they used in a way similar to sled dogs.
In the elven city of Vincullum, the richest kingdom in the world, they literally don't have any livestock, because there's no farmers. The kingdom was built in a desert on top of a massive ancient jewel mine, so they depend on trade to survive. The thinks they usually have most accessible to them are silk and velvet, since the God of Vincullum is married to the Goddess of Amare, who loves to give her husband fancy gifts. The norm is to cover up everything as protection from the hot sun. Clothing is usually loose and modest, but jewelry is more important then clothes to most people in Vincullum, and you're supposed to wear a certain gemstone based on your social class
Actually helpful. Nice. I dont mean this in a your not helpful way, i mean i have a world building related assignment, and this helped alot. Also, noice Deltarune music. Rude buster
Ok I could be wrong with this but living in a sunny hot area does not always mean the people in that area will show a lot of skin! They would wear clothes that cover the body to protect from sun and the fabrics would be lighter.
The cost of certain dies might be something you'd want to take into consideration, Rome with purple dye being an extreme example. Or pink with Vikings.
Apologies for yapping, but I was just thinking about this for my D&D world. Within a region of my world, there exists a place where dragons go to die in peace. When a conqueror swept through the land, the dragonborn formed a last line of defense that eventually fell to said conqueror and became the Imperial Provence of Dragonhold. In this kingdom, defiling a dragon’s corpse is a crime punishable by death, even though there are many dragons that come to Dragonhold to die. Very few people are able to wear dragon scales, mostly the rich and priests of the Church of the Dragon Gods. The only way one would be able to obtain dragon scales is if a dragon willingly gave the scales to the person. So only high ranking members of the clergy and the high king himself are able to wear clothes made from dragon scales. The colors in the region mostly follow the shades of dragons (blue, black, green, white, red).
For my world I haven’t quite thought about all the clothing except for that mages wear very loose and little clothing or very revealing clothing because when they use magic they covert their magic energy into heat. And if they have a bunch of tight layers on them that heat can’t escape and they’ll die of a heatstroke. So very little (as in amount and size), loose and revealing clothing.
in my fictional world the action takes place in medieval Europe so I couldn't think of anything better than to leave everything as is. It practically corresponds to reality. Religion, plague, poverty, the position of women and so on. Because I'm used to focusing more on the characters than on the world.
The colours are important too based on how easy was to get each of then and to maintain them in this state.
I didn't think about that like clay is used for red and plants's pettles and bugs.
Purple has been a hard to obtain colour for a long time, that's why it's been considered a royal colour cause only the richest could afford it
And the common traits or factions
Another tip: does this culture trade? If so, there will be cultural diffusion. If you have a culture that trades a lot, then the clothes are going to have similar elements from different cultures.
If this culture is more isolated, they are likely to be more unique
ooh this is also a great point!
~✨Silk Road✨~
My fictional culture is hyper nationalist and they despise outsiders so they just make their own stuff, cant let anyone import or export anything
Just like the Romans!
Granted they also took parts of others cultures that benefited them in many ways as well

As someone who wants to be a writer, this series is perfect for me thank you! My world building is about a cat society (based on how real life cats behave) so some of these I already worked out.
Since they already have fur they do not wear clothes (Aside from collars which show their social status.) and no body part is deemed innapropriate.
The beauty standard is similar for both genders, they find cats with long soft fur, large size and strong genes to be the most attractive (Though it matters a bit more with males because they can pass their genes more frequently.)
Still working out a few details though.
This is my favorite series of yours so far. Thank you for this!!!
YES!! My favourite series is back!
This was really helpful I came up with a bunch of stuff
( they are basically the most powerful kingdom and the richest )
The beauty standards are similar everywhere ( but the earth kingdom I’ll explain later on ) , the richest have clean faces , long hair , and large horns / wings / tails / fins / other to show they are powerful while the earth kingdom shows that tattoos ( leaders of tribes have tattoos of their symbol on their faces ) , dainty wings/horns/ etc etc are wanted and a form of plant ( tattoos , a actual plant or other )
It is probably gonna change later on ty for reading my rant !
I have thought about culture before but never those questions, alright, let's get to work and make my world more live in!
Decided to share the culture I thought of:
They live in a mountainous environment which is usually around 20 degreees celcius, but since most mountains are volcanos, their peaks can be up to 50 degrees (not during an eruption).
Thank you, I’m a writer and will be applying this
Btw for clothing and climate.
If they live in a desert, historically that ends up with lots of very covering but very light cloth, to cut down on sunburn while not overheating.
Meanwhile in rainforests, thats when you get folks with not much on because again hot as well as humid, and clothes don't ever get properly dry (lots of humidity+sweat+fairly frequent rain) plus their in the shade most of the time off of the trees.
when the buster is rude 🔥🔥🔥🔥
OH! That reminds me of one I made ages ago. They lived in a swamp and wore a sort of leather bellbottoms from fantasy frog skin that let them inflate along the ankles allowing them to effectively glide along the waters surface like they were ice skating. And they had some sort of semi-aquatic fox pets that they used in a way similar to sled dogs.
me when historical and dialectical materialism:
Based
@@rockstarskolas based indeed
Rude buster
Love ❤❤❤❤ will def use this for my graphic novel loving all ur vids ❤❤
Gonna try to keep this in mind to try drawing clothes for my story
Ok I could be wrong with this but living in a sunny hot area does not always mean the people in that area will show a lot of skin! They would wear clothes that cover the body to protect from sun and the fabrics would be lighter.
Thank you so much! It's really helpful 😊
The cost of certain dies might be something you'd want to take into consideration, Rome with purple dye being an extreme example. Or pink with Vikings.
I love this person
When your series consists of multiple planets and every planet has it's own world to work on: :_)
This makes it easier to think and visualize, thanks.
UHM?? I'm saving this video I love it sm 😭🙏🏽
Thanks these Are really Great questions to help me Write my story!:D
I got so happy instantly when I heard the deltrune music
YES ANOTHER ONE OF THESE AMAZING VIDS
time for me to watch this over and over because I can
Omg ur vids r solo helpful❤
For my world I haven’t quite thought about all the clothing except for that mages wear very loose and little clothing or very revealing clothing because when they use magic they covert their magic energy into heat. And if they have a bunch of tight layers on them that heat can’t escape and they’ll die of a heatstroke. So very little (as in amount and size), loose and revealing clothing.
Thank you for the knowledge
no one:
me vibing to the deltarune music:
Thanks this helps a lot
in my fictional world the action takes place in medieval Europe so I couldn't think of anything better than to leave everything as is. It practically corresponds to reality. Religion, plague, poverty, the position of women and so on. Because I'm used to focusing more on the characters than on the world.
tip:
i think you should do stereotypes about the culture
u could also choose who made these stereotypes
why they exist
how do people react to them
That's actually a really cool idea :0
This is super helpful! I love this series ❤️ thank you!!
