      One time at college one of my buddies decided it would be fun to stack all the overdrive type pedals we could find in the dorm. We ended up with I think four pedals, including one Metal Zone, one Digitech Bad Monkey, and his multieffects pedal, all with the gain all the way up, and his amp also had the drive knob all the way up. While actually playing the guitar, the notes were recognizable, but any silence in between was mutilated by absurd amounts of feedback.

    Thanks for this video. I had not really explored effectively how to use the stacking methods. This vid was really useful and has made this pedal really fun for quickly trying multiple settings. Having owned many of these pedals previously, having all the pieces (interfaces between them defined\able, sequencing, and the very effective noise gate) in one unified package and your great tips on settings to try, has really launched this kit for me. That pedal is simply awesome for its versatility within the realm of gain, which is a complex tone category in itself. I love the combination of analogue and digital, which is brilliant, and how the pedal really lets you stack distortion tones and balance them out perfectly. I love the more 70s and 80s tones you can get with one, having tried one my friend owns. I'll be getting one for sure as my next pedal.

  • @tracfones7silver406
    @tracfones7silver406 Год назад +1

    This is the best of the OD-200 reviews because it focuses on the combinations of sounds available, and there's a lot more going on than Colin goes into. For example, putting one of the high-gain pedals in parallel with a fuzz yields the aggressive attack of the metal pedal and the sustaining overtones of the fuzz. It's a really interesting type of metal sound that no other pedal I know of can pull off.

    I use a Russian Green Fuzz boasted by a tube screamer, with lots of Gain it’s a stoner/sludge dream. But with all level and low gain, add chorus and wah it’s a smooth but chaotic lead tone
    I use the lead tone with a Marshall clone and cab with a second head/cab rhythm tone that’s a 5150 with a gunned HM-2 boosted by a clean full level OD-1
    Stacking Overdrives is the best thing ever love the video as always Colin

    I made myself a rack unit with a dozen analog drive/fuzz/distortion circuits; some 2 knob and some 3-knob. They are arranged as two sets of 6, with each set allowing true-bypass selection of any single circuit via a rotary switch, and its own in and out. A non-dedicated 3-band semi-parametric EQ can be inserted after, before, or between. While I cannot place ANY given drive before or after any *other* given drive, the ability to have a dozen choices for what might come before and what might come after, provides more than enough flexibility, I should think; particularly when I can shape the result, or the driving tone, with the EQ.
    What's in there? Good question. Set A: clones of Heathkit and Olson fuzzes, an EHX Muff Fuzz, MXR Distortion+, Gretsch Contrafuzz, and Harmonic Percolator. Set B has clones of an Orpheum Fuzz, Jordan Bosstone, Roger Mayer Octavia, Roland Double-Beat Fuzz section, and ZVex Box of Rock. That's a whole lot of terrain!

    Anyone else think this would be best used in the studio? It certainly would be a more controlled environment with less noise to pick up the subtleties. Plus, it's compact. 4 memories is good; more seems like a good idea, but if you like your tone, 4 is enough.

    What is transparent overdrive?

    • @Yorie1234
      @Yorie1234 4 года назад +3

      it's an overdrive that has a see-through case...
      but more seriously, it is an overdrive where the original guitar sound is still recognizable. i think.

    • @sparkplug1018
      @sparkplug1018 4 года назад +3

      Answer: A unicorn. The ideal answer would be an overdrive that doesn't change the tone in any way at all, in other words it doesn't make its presence known.
      As far as I know though, no one has nailed this completely as they all do at least a little to the tone. The trick is of course picking one who's effect you like.

      The term was coined by Bill Finnegan for how the Klon Centaur/KTR works. It's basically a hard clipping distortion pedal with an adjustable bit of the clean sound blended in. Think of it as a clean boost and a distortion pedal run in parallel.

    i like doing 3 gain stages - 1 sd1/tubescreamer into another into a tube amp -
    light gain on all 3

    Say if you use a Big Muff. If you turn the gain up, you don't suddenly get more mids. If you put something like a Boss EQ or a MXR Micro Amp+, you can control which frequencies get boosted.

    What's the difference between an amp that has a master and volume knob and an amp that only has 1 volume control? Is one better than the other?

    I might just have to get the OD-200 after hearing that Bls > Dst tone. Can you, if you remember, please share the settings used for each?

    Can you do a TATA on the so called "transparency" of certain overdrives? I don't understand the concept completely.

    TATA: What are some other cool ways to combine pedals? I'd love to see goofy, tricksy things-not only in series/stacked, but in parallel (with summing amps?) etc!

    How do you run drives parallel with out this fancy boss 200... I got heaps of regular pedals!?!?

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  4 года назад +1

      You'd need a couple of ABY boxes to split the signal to two distortion pedals and recombine them again afterwards.

    Of course one of the settings is Metal Zone stacked with another Metal Zone, with all the gain and no mids!

  • @AvaToccoRodriguez
    @AvaToccoRodriguez 4 года назад

    Quick question: I use a Metal Zone and I actually turned the gain way down and have a pretty nice rhythm/kinda djenty tone.
    What pedal would you recommend to tighten the low end a tad?

    • @AvaToccoRodriguez
      @AvaToccoRodriguez 4 года назад

      But...
      It the metal zone already has loads of gain? The lowest setting still breaks up the signal a ton

    • @austinledley
      @austinledley 4 года назад +1

      Rose believe it or not, consider a tube screamer. I used to use one as a boost quite often and it did the job just fine. Another great OD pedal for is the Fulltone OCD, but I’m not sure how well it would do with a metal zone because it also adds a ton of gain.
