While true. What's more important than height is mobility especially in the NBA.
A big that can defend the rim very well but struggles to move laterally will get exploited.
What's the use of being a great shotblocker when you can't even stay in the paint. As teams will force you to move your feet and pull you out the paint.

Edy is a victim of the NBA's over shift to the 3 offensively. that combined with scouts not giving him credit for being relatively new to basketball and thus having a higher ceiling than other Bigs that had been playing. Edy wasn't a one and done type because he didn't start playing until like his sophomore year of high school, so he had to develop more in college as a basketball player. Kind of like Tim Duncan switching from swimming to basketball as a teenager then doing 4 years of increasing his statistical output in college. and when you play 4 years of college ball you tend to fall out of the lottery, because teams feel like you're basically done developing...him and Knecht had a similar fall in the draft, and I thought both would be good because Knecht is new to his 6'5 size and Edy is new to basketball. If Knecht is a 6'5 freshman in college instead of 6'3, he's 1 and done. If Edy had played basketball his whole life coming into college, he would have been 1 and done too.

He's not quite that type of shot blocker yet. Clingan is a better shot blocker and was drafted before him. But we'll see if he can develop that side of his game to be an elite blocker.
Something people aren't talking about is his shooting. In his 4 year college career he attempted two 3's, both in his final season. Now, in the NBA, he's already shot 10 of them and made.. SIX of them. He's shooting 60% from 3. His free throw percentage has also dramatically improved from his first stretch of games to his last. I guarantee you he will have a 3pt shot like brook lopez but likely better. This is the development you see with players who started playing basketball late and who have high athletic potential (dude was playing hockey and baseball at the same time and was nationally ranked in both).

According to ChatGPT -- which confirmed my own beliefs 😀...
What is the bias called when comparing an NBA player only to the past and ignoring his actual current and potential abilities?
    Answer:
This bias is often referred to as anchoring bias or status quo bias.
Anchoring Bias: This occurs when someone fixates on initial information (e.g., past performance) and fails to adjust their assessment adequately based on new or current information. In this case, the player’s past performance overly influences how they are judged, rather than considering their current abilities and potential growth.
Status Quo Bias: This reflects a preference for the current or historical state of things, resisting change or reevaluation, which could result in ignoring the player's evolution or potential.
Both biases could lead to undervaluing or overvaluing a player's true abilities.

Purdue Fans knew somethings the "experts" overlooked. Edey was WAY more athletic than the experts gave credit for. Edey started playing basketball about 6 years ago. Most NBA players are in the third grade when they are playing their 6th year of basketball. Edey was overlooked coming into college as well, and came in behind an all Big Ten center, yet earned immediate playing time and took over from the All Star as starter because of his work ethic. Not many players work as hard. Because Edey didn't grow up as a pampered super star, he's super humble and willing to do whatever the organization asks. He's not going to demand anything, minutes, points, starting, nothing. He will start, he will come off the bench. He will learn new skills. He missed ZERO hours to injury in college, so these ankle things are probably a fluke. He played 40 minutes during Purdue run to the National Championship game, his cardio is amazing. He's already shown he'll be able to be a competent three point shooter, despite shooting a grand total of 2 three point attempts in college ( finishing with an AMAZING 50 % from 3😂). Although he isn't as quick as some of the flashes in the NBA, he is MUCH faster than most people realized but ONE "Edey Stride " is worth about 3 normal NBA player steps. This guy makes 7 footers look tiny, I hope everyone gets to see him in person someday. His game absolutely positively will translate. The question is, how high is his ceiling? IMHO the ceiling is All Star and Olympian. The fabulous players surrounding Edey on the Grizzlies only make his successful transition to the big time much easier than it could have been. I say, sit back and enjoy the ride, and maybe put in a small futures bet on the Grizzlies winning it all.

Most NBA coaches and teams are simply lazy. The NBA is much simpler than it was before. There's still a place for a solid post game.

I can admit when I’m wrong. I didn’t see this in him as a fit. I didn’t think he’d fit because I didn’t think he could play outside. I felt his foot speed would limit him guarding small centers but he’s shown he’s not as slow as I thought and he’s a better shooter. I didn’t see him play like this in college. Oh well I’ll own it. I got Ben Simmons, jahlil Okafor and Tyler Hansbrough (sp?) correct.

@just watch the finals game of him in college. The dude was insane. His teammates were bricking every shot yet Edey was hustling his ass off and kept them in the game through most of it. It looked like he was playing UConn 1v5. He had 37/60 of Purdue’s points. I had never seen a player in nba or ncaa try so hard to win a game. He’s also 7’4’’, 300 lbs, and not awkward like a lot of guys have been around that height. The dude has great coordination and even has a jumper. He also started playing basketball probably later than most other hoopers, so I think he’s got a ton of potential to be an all star one day.

I was hoping the other teams let him slide to the second round to see the Warriors draft him, he was what they needed.

Top 5 really? I mean there’s the top 5 originally selected risacher, sarr, reed, castle, and holland. Out of those 5 the only team I could see being disappointed enough to change their pick is the pistons but even then they knew holland would be dog shit on offense. All of those players have 3 years in the nba to develop to the age edey is now, so I think that’s also jumping the gun. Not to mention all the players picked after him who are over preforming as well McCain, Dalton, Wells, and even Ryan Dunn. I’d take at least two of those guys over Edey. I also still believe in Clingan, Saluan, and Dill longterm. People were saying the same stuff about Jaime Jacquez “how did he fall this far” and mocking him 3rd overall in redrafts same with kuz. Let’s just slow down

Relax my guy. Saying a guy who went 9th overall because he was a 4 year college player, is nuts.
If Edey fell to 20th or the 2nd round then yes, you can absolutely say that teams “miscalculated” on him.
But at #9 you can’t say teams miscalculated on him because one team took him #9 overall (VERY rare for a 3 year and something that hasn’t happened probably a decade overall most likely. There might have been a 4 year senior that snuck into the top 4 over the last decade but I just can’t think of him off the top of my head, further illustrating why Edey going #9 overall was surprising).
It’s wild to say a back to back Wooden Player of the Year who played for the natty and just dominated NCAA hoops for two years fell to #9 overall but then you study game film on him and his combine film it makes some sense. Also keep in mind that Edey was in the shape of his life at the combine. His movement absolutely helped his stock and he wouldn’t have dropped much even if the Grizzlies passed.
Ten years ago Grizzlies would’ve likely been a lottery pick after his junior year so Purdue would’ve never been able to go in their magical run.
Twenty years ago he maybe would’ve been a top 5 pick
Thirty years ago he might’ve gone #1 overall (especially in this garbage can of a draft. Imagine being told 7-8 years ago that in 2024 you’ll win the lottery and get the #1 player in the draft. You’ll likely draft a guy dude, the second year in a row a French teenager was drafted #1 overall. The 2023 #1 overall will end up being a top 10 player all time and the 2024 #1 overall pick will be lucky to be an NBA player in 5 years.

No one said he couldn’t play, but his game clearly has not “translated”. He’ll never be able to defend in space, illustrated by his 5.6 fouls per 36, and this will always limit his minutes.
