Yes, it is wonderful show and all the actresses are wonderful (personally I'm fond of Anna Maxwell Martin). I watched it several times and definitely will rewatch more.
Talking about an original female-led mystery, there is fashionable "The Mrs Bradley Mysteries" (1998, 5 episodes).
Talking about female-led shows of other genres there are (of my best list): The Duchess of Duke Street (1976-77), The House of Eliott (1991-94) and Lark Rise to Candleford (2008-11).
Bloody brilliant lineup of extremely talented actresses............in a great series! Wish I could get series 1 here in Italy.
yeah it just never caught fire as a series the way it should have, under rated doesn't begin to describe what happened here.
Put together extremely well. If I wasn't hooked already on this series, this would grab my attention. :) I love it, and all the actresses, especially Rachael Stirling. I hope there is a third series...
I think I heard that ITV axed the show after its second series so yeah I'm EXTREMELY upset and probably never going to get over the fact that there's like a million different Sherlock's but we get an original female-led mystery and it gets canceled after two series. IT PISSES ME OFF! Anyways...thanks for the lovely comment!

Ugh. Idiots! well, now I'm pissed too. Can only hope it gets another life down the line. I thought it was critically well received and went over well enough in the US... This is one of those times I know what I would do if I were rich. ;)

A bit late now, but a spin off called Bletchley circle san Francisco was released in 2018. Its got Millie and Jean plus some new cast

Was introduced to The Bletchley Circle through PBS here in the States. Based on actual goings-on at Bletchley, this gives credit to the many women (& men) who gave their all to help 'behind the scenes' during WWII. Sadly but I guess from a national security perspective, understandably, these folks had to sign the Official Secrets Act whereby they could tell *no one* for 50 years about anything they did! They deserved so much credit for their decoding skills & everything else these wonderful sometimes scary story lines show, would've helped such women do exactly as these tales show us. The DVDs were for sale through PBS.

Best mini-series I've watched all year. Must admit I was a little skeptical, thinking it was going to be a tacky, "hysterical woman running on instincts saves the day" kind of thing but NO! It was very intelligently done and I've already rewatched both seasons! Fabulous fashion inspiration too.
