I feel like the other side to 'low level players don't know what to do with information' is that low level players also tend to know a *lot* less about what's going on, so they get more information from maphacks. Like, a GM can extract a fair amount of information about an opponent's build from how far along a hatchery is or how many workers they have on their natural. A gold player can't necessarily do that - and anyway at that level their opponent might just have forgotten to expand or build workers. For a lower level player, maphacks give basic information like 'is this Terran going mech or bio?' that a GM would already be able to get very easily from their deeper knowledge of the game.

There is a HUGE advantage on average at lower levels (all levels, really) when you factor in the MMR increase for seeing various cheeses and proxies coming. I find a reasonbly large percentage of my games have these at my (lower) level.
You didn't see that at all in Harstem's games against his maphacking friend, but just look here in the first game for a good example. I imagine always catching proxy raxxes would push a player a lot higher on the ladder against Terrans. I'd probably gain a few 100 MMR just if I could just maphack for the first 3 minutes of a game, and then turned it off.

    • @starcraft2own
      @starcraft2own 2 месяца назад +1

I actually tried this against my friend without telling him. I enabled cheats and turned on maphack for a best of 7 set to see just how much maphack can give you an advantage. And for context, i used to win 60/40 before maphacking. Afterwards, not a single game was even close. Even the games where i pretended i was playing ladder and had to hide my cheats.
You can gain immense value from being able to see the very units your opponent is playing, but you can also gain unbeatable info by just seeing army movements on the map. When to tech up, when to macro, when to fight. If you lack confidence in your play, maphacks removes that issue entirely. He told me after those games that he felt i was playing like a madman. I took every risk i possibly could, like i was playing as if i couldn't lose. There is no greater confidence boost than to remove the uncertainty of the fog of war. The top league of RTS games are good because they can understand whats in the fog of war without seeing it themselves. You remove that, then good players can be equally deadly.
I genuinely think, in an equal game. Maphacking will make you win pretty much 9 out of 10 games. Maybe a bit lower of you're trying to be subtle about it.

I would think any well timed push would do considerable damage to hackers? Just don't do anything tricky? Don't proxy anything. Don't do any drops or harass.
I used to play Brood Wars. A lot of 4v4. I'd build a large army of dragoons. With as good macro as possible. Knowing about it wasn't any help. It didn't have any real weaknesses. I'd just add in zealots for terran. The enemy team would often ally me even if I lost because they were just like you didn't deserve to lose. I want you on my team. Lol. So even when I lost I would usually win.

The problem for map hackers is that of course they don't know how to respond to the information they see, because their skill level is much, much lower than their MMR would suggest. So map hacking basically puts silver league players into platinum, or gold into diamond but it doesn't mean they have the skills, and they don't if they did, hacking would put them into Master. Where they would be beaten by master level players who do have master level skills. So it's a funny thing really.

  • @felisk4304

what many people seem to forget about low MMR hackers is that they're not even low MMR, they're even lower MMR players that get boosted into low MMR.
The amount of mistakes make for them to be unable to climb higher even with the use of cheats is very high.
You should always play your games to the end instead of guaranteeing your loss by leaving.

This series is awesome, but I have to say I really preferred the earlier episodes where it took pretty significant evidence before making the call that this is almost certainly a hacker. Even if there's some pre-production where we've identified a likely replay, it feels like a better exercise to approach with extreme caution. If not for the content itself, for the sake of the viewers. I feel like too many people are going to go out and start calling every strange occurrence a clear of of map hacking if we don't encourage skepticism.

Harstem, my captain, please investigate the player named zed on the NA server in gold/silver leagues. I've played this hacker twice, and the replays show even more obvious map hacking than in your videos. I don't know why, but the report button isn't there when I've tried to report the hacker, so I fear they are using a version of map hack that prevents them being reported for it.
I know it's only metal league play, but it's just as frustrating to know that the scumbag is still out there ruining the game for people like me. He plays as terran in the 2 games I've played against him, and the replays show dozens of peeks through the fog of war, and lots of preemptive/predictive army movements.

In my opinion as a low-Diamond (3.1-3.2K): I would have a lot of trouble beating, say, 3.8K with maphack. My mechanics aren't up to it; the information would be nice but that's not enough. My chances would be better if they didn't know I had maphack--I might win occasionally because of failed cheeses. Still not high though. If they know I have maphack, they should just play standard and win.
Conversely, 2.3K with maphack is unlikely to beat me, due to deficient macro: I can just make a ton of units and come across the map in a straightforward way and win. I don't think it will matter much if I know or not. If I know, I won't cheese ZvP, which I otherwise do: but honestly the cheese would probably work even if they saw it coming. Making a roach-proof wall on the fly is hard for Gold, and they may not have the money.
Would love to participate in the experiment, if someone wants to run it!

My understanding is that the hack would stop the game from recording the peek in the replay file when they click on a fog of war area.
Like when you are looking at your base, then you click on the enemy's base, the hack would show the enemy's base to you, but it would also make sure that the saved reply is keep showing your base, and the view in the reply would only change again when the hacker clicks on a legally visible area or when they move the camera to a legally visible area. Basically hiding the screen peeks.

The first time I ran into a map hacker was in WoL on that 4-player map Metalopolis (if anyone remembers that). I was only in gold league at the time and when I posted the replay in the official forums to report them, most just wrote it off with "lol why would someone map hack in gold league", which was really frustrating. But you watch the replay and it was very obvious, as watching it from his point of view he was constantly looking at my base. The most egregious was when I built a nydus worm in that small area at the back of the bases that was surrounded in those fumes. He didn't have any vision of that area, but he somehow knew immediately the moment it started building (this wasn't after you hear the nydus worm scream after it pops out, this was as soon as started to build). He then proceeded to attack my base with his entire army, which he somehow knew the position of without ever scouting even once (remember it was a 4 player spawn map). It was soooo obvious when you watched it. "Why would someone map hack in gold league" is a good question, but I guess map hackers need to start in the lower leagues and work their way up like everyone else does.
