Philosopher Peter Singer started the animal rights movement with his 1975 book "Animal Liberation." Speciesism is the belief that humans are superior to non-human animals, and Singer calls this into question. Animals are smart, feel pain, and have the ability to express compassion just like us, yet humans have a long history of animal exploitation that needs to be addressed.
Throughout history, humans and animals have had a relationship that continues to evolve. Ancient humans hunted animals for food, but made use of every part of the animal. In the 1960s, factory farming was introduced - but at what cost? We once depended on horses for transportation until the Model T was introduced, which marks an evolution in our relationship with animals. Now that plant-based protein is so readily available, why are we still exploiting animals for food?
Films like Charlotte's Web (1973 & 2006), Babe (1995) and Chicken Run (2000) explore the issues of viewing animals as commodities. Animals are portrayed with the capacity to feel, and they all want to escape slaughter to continue living. The underlying ethical question of why humans reduce animals to a commodity is called into question.
