This should be a series, like "Ben Unplugged" Watching him use everyday tools gives me way better tips on how to build projects in general. Great show by the way.
THANK YOU for making the ads shorter! i must say i got really annoyed by the long ads in the past, and the current ad is great, makes the product look a lot better actually!
cut squares around the spacer templates using a ruler instead of circles. this means that the spaces only meets the paper at 4 points and avoids the paper sticking to the glue.I have also just realized how much better loctite superglue is than cheap stuff. so so strong. you can also mount your spacers to your pcbs or parts and then cover the bases in glue and stick to the plastic. this will ensure they fit well
This is the first video I watched from this channel and I find what the author is doing really creative and smart. I don't understand (and I never will) why people has to be mean or rude when you are just showing good 'healthy' things. Don't get me wrong, I think it's fine to have a joke, but some times I get the impression that people (some) just comment to relief their frustration/anger. Keep up the great work.
14:31 turning screw and if you turn up volume you hear the glue break thats holding the nylon thingy...the look how tough it is caught my eye as well but it was in fact a screw on his desk that jumped up onto the case
What kind of plastic are you using? Thanks and Awesome video especially for me since i'm 14 and nowhere near enough money for a 3d printer and saving up for a 3doodler.
this is helpful for my project. I'm putting a Raspberry Pi into a PSP and I need more space for the screen so I could plastic on the side to raise it up a bit and then super glue the parts in.
no way! linkin logs are the best! used to make a little teeter totter out of them with the flat roof parts an put something on one end and launch it by smacking the other end lol. plus much better to step on in the dark with bare feet.
if you have to do custom case by hand I'd perhaps prefer carving a shape in wood then coat with 2 comp casting plastic and finish the surface and use that for mold for casting plastic case. that can look decent and be sturdy.
Why not use something like spray adhesive for attaching the template to the plastic? It ensures the template won't move at all and is easily cleaned up when the scribing is complete.
Pretty slick case! And don't forget, if you have access to a 3D printer you can print out some of the Pinball machine parts. Just look for your local Hacker Space to find a 3D printer to use :)
Ebay is not an answer, friends... "Where can I get a great scarf?" "Ebay" I was looking for a company or a seller or anything tested and "touched": thanks ***** :)
RASPBERRY PI! I am twelve and that is the thing I use for EVERYTHING! I am going to hack up and ION ICADE and hook all the controls into an iPAC board. Then I can use it as a cool, usb control panel for my raspberry pi MAME console. Really simple, but it is a little pricey to build the control panel...Happy Hacking!
Oh yea cant wait for the Quadcopter episode Ive been thinking of making one for some time and it will be nice to see you do it so I can maybe follow your lead! Keep up the awesome work
Ben! Am a big fan of your show and work! It inspires me a lot but being 15 years old is a huge set back for me as I don't have the required budget to buy proper appliances.. What type of beginner project do you recommend for a 15 year old ?
See the electrical circuit, but I really don't have the slightest queue about drawing electrical schemes, could you make a video on them, since, you are allready sharing tips and tricks?
I am making a super simple and compact pi-computer or pi-puter with a pi ( obviously), a RII 2.4 GHz wireless mini keyboard ( black) and a 4.3 inch reversing monitor with an aluminium laser cut and soldered case and very small hinges so it can fold over with pi andLCD reversing monitor on the top half and the keyboard on the bottom. Though like your pi portible it is earphones only and I can't find a small enough power source to fit in it.
Can you make a PC case with same materials as this one? Or is the plastic too fragile/weak to carry have components? My general idea is something small like a Mini-ITX case.
Just run your 1D printer in reverse. Check if it has a reverse switch first. If not you might have to mess with the space-time continuum. Not recommended. If you slip into another dimension you're screwed.
Jonathan Gray Thanks, that worked. I removed all the flux capacitor fluid first as to not mess up the space-time continuum. But I now have this black spot in my office and no light can escape from it. Any ideas how to get rid of it?
And yet again, another interesting video... I have a good idea for stuff, but not having the tools to do it all, makes me wonder HOW !! Engraving plastic and aluminium flat stock !! Such a simple way of getting stuff done! I do have a hot glue gun ... Somewhere... As for the other tools, I can get them if need be ;) Love the videos.. Hugz fae a Daft and Cuddly Scotsman.
print on self adhesive paper, much easier to apply and if you get the cheap kind, the adhesive is weak enough to remove without problems. Just a wipe down with alcohol afterwards to get rid of adhesive residues and voila.
I was thinking... you could shape a 2x4 (or maybe a 2x8 or wider) to the outside dimensions of your case. Then bend plexiglass around the form using a heating. The top and back could be made the same way you showed with plexiglass. Maybe cutting most of the openings with a Drexel on a router base. You could even setup stops to guide the router cuts. Then the outside could be beveled with a router as well.
Could you tell me whats the name of the software in the beginning of your video please. Looks like it is way better than the other I use. Love your videos!!
I would suggest new users to have a straight edge to make straight cuts. Ben is very experienced, but newer hackers and most others should take advantage of the tools.
you might be able to run it in wine depending on the programme, or you can use something like virtualbox to emulate windows in linux (use windows xp, its free!)
really nice thanks for the tips, I feel alienated when you use the laser cutter or cncs. =( Hope I can build my cnc router anytime soon, still a long way to go.
@lord three so what if the screw came out there's other ways to hold the case together the point is that toucan make a case by hand that is quite accurate
I love your vids but some very basic things are missed. Use a light spray of spray adhesive to stick the printed file down to the the plastic. And always use a steel rule when cutting straight edges and a circle cutter for circles and curved edges for instance. when cutting parts that you wish to remove from the center of a part, rotate the scalpel blade and continue scoring the plastic... it will scrape the plastic and eventually the part will fall out. then use some 600 wet and dry to sand
Look at how tough it is, drops it from 1 meter and instantly a screw flies out.... Ben you sure you don't work at apples display test area? thx for a great episode
hi, me and a friend of mine want to each make a handheld gamecube with the wiikey fusion and all the vids or forums dont tell much, so is there a way you can make a tutorial?
Lol when he said "look how tough it is" and he dropped it a screw came out

I'm glad you posted this. I had no idea about engraving plastic. Not being about to afford a CNC or 3D Printer, this is priceless.
You are the best Ben. Never stop to amaze me what you can do, plus I'm thankful for you to share your knowledge.
Why haven't I heard from this channel before? THIS IS AWESOME!

Great ideas for low budget prototyping! Thanks as always Ben! :)
"look at how tough it is" > screw jumps out. lmao. Otherwise inspiring as usual ;)
lmao

Can't wait for the quadracopter!!!

That Pie laptop looks cool! Kinda wanna get one of those now.

@6:50 sounds like the beginning of a terminator movie. "When the machines came around"
Really like the new SHORT commercials!

The day is here! I was waiting for this video a long time ago!
Lincoln Logs !!! !! they brought them back. Real wood and all.
Pretty slick case! And don't forget, if you have access to a 3D printer you can print out some of the Pinball machine parts. Just look for your local Hacker Space to find a 3D printer to use :)
You are total inspiration to me!
God bless you!
Where do you usually get good nintendo pads (originals or incredibly good clones)?
EBay....
EBay....
Ebay....
Ebay is not an answer, friends...
"Where can I get a great scarf?"
"Ebay"
I was looking for a company or a seller or anything tested and "touched": thanks ***** :)
Davide Nastri sorry a good place is www(dot)asmretro(dot)com

You should do more videos like this for those of us who don't have access to the sweet equipment.
Oh yea cant wait for the Quadcopter episode Ive been thinking of making one for some time and it will be nice to see you do it so I can maybe follow your lead! Keep up the awesome work

Perfect timing, need to build a case for my psp arcade cabinet.
Is that the touch screen designed for the Raspberry Pi? Looking forward to more.

87steveom
Use black light catcher device with elements turning 1.0001 times faster than speed of light.
Steve87 if u go into the hole u will need to have a straightforward quantum tunnel
Or get a anti singularity capsule and again hide in the quantum tunnel just don't get lost

This would be an awesome discovery show!

Nice, thanks for the inspiration Ben!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Excellent video thanks a lot
My hero! awesome ideas, thank you sooo much!
Question, is there a reason why you are not using flat countersunk screws on the back? Btw, love your channel
Thanks, this video will come handy

Quadcopter! Can't wait! :)
Thanks Ben this is exactly what i need for my PI laptop :)
15:35 "look how tough it is." **sees a screw pop out and roll on the corner**
Great episode, thanks ben!
Cant wait for the quadcopter
why would someone dislike this??? those are amazing videos...
Could you tell me whats the name of the software in the beginning of your video please. Looks like it is way better than the other I use.
Love your videos!!
Adobe InDesign
Possible to re-render and upload?
really stable!
Thank you for the awesome tutorials!
Exactly what I want ,
thank you very very very much.
Look at how tough it is! **Screw falls out**
Cheers Ben

Hey Ben, great show. ever thought about casting your cases with liquid plastic?
Where did you buy the engraving plastic from? I would like to try to make a case for a raspberry pi.
I won that staring contest!, only cause this is so interesting that i cant take my eyes off the screen!
Could you do some simple computer case hacks? :) Just some simple and cool things you can do to a case :)
you might be able to run it in wine depending on the programme, or you can use something like virtualbox to emulate windows in linux (use windows xp, its free!)
what touch screen did you use for the raspberry pi laptop??
Looking forward to the quadcopter ep
Also wonder where I can get all the soldering parts and what not like where to buy one and how to do it
At 4:17 would be easier if you used a ruler as support for keeping your cut straight.
really nice thanks for the tips, I feel alienated when you use the laser cutter or cncs. =(
Hope I can build my cnc router anytime soon, still a long way to go.
@lord three so what if the screw came out there's other ways to hold the case together the point is that toucan make a case by hand that is quite accurate
Thanks dude!
That background music Reminds me of Tracy Lord movies ;-)
Ben just posted a video a few weeks ago called: Principles of Schematics
that would be awesome
Thanks your a big help
JB Weld is wonderful stuff, it's a LOT tougher than hotglue or Superglue
Ben is NASA
can engraving plastic be shaped using heat? like the vinyl for vacuform.

Hi,
could anyone please tell the detail of this "Engraving Plastic" ? What material is it? Any "other" names?
Would not it be useful a side cutting drill bit?
10:45 Yup, that aluminium will be Ben'd. Haha, get it?
Could you use a dremel for cutting the plastic
yes
Ben can you please show us how to type on a lcd screen or serial monitor for arduino uno with a usb keyboard
im going to try it out myself and make my own 3D pen it will be good for man made 3D objects from melted plastic
Is your book published in Sweden, or can I order it somewhere?
you could use some cup drill to make those holes
Look at how tough it is, drops it from 1 meter and instantly a screw flies out.... Ben you sure you don't work at apples display test area?
thx for a great episode
If you "unplugged the 3D printer" then why is it running?
Perhaps the data, not the power.
The Ben Heck Show But it would require data to print something, and it is printing something...
***** Maybe the data is already in the printers memory
He didn't mean it literally.
+Les King (Lesking72)
wireless?
make a video on a gaming controller for the iphone5
Great now I need a printer!
You are awesome man and I love this show.. :)
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH
what design software should I use
hi, me and a friend of mine want to each make a handheld gamecube with the wiikey fusion and all the vids or forums dont tell much, so is there a way you can make a tutorial?
great advice for people who don't have all the tools at their disposal
What is this engraving plastic? Where can I get it from?
Does anyone have a link to where I can buy that type of engraving plastic?
You could always use 2 part epoxy once you know the screw mounts are in the right places! :)
