not just idols but regular male citizens who have not yet done their mandatory service would use them as a reason of why they shouldn't have to serve. then those who did serve would be pissed and probably go on strike.
BTS will be going to the army 😊 all they did was extend the age limit for which BTS have to serve before. So in a year Jin is actually leaving to serve because he will be 30 years old. And BTS or their company never in first place asked for this exemption, their name was just used in order (if they didn’t have to serve) for some other idol groups to hopefully also be exempt from serving in the army.. 💜
I’m an army so I follow updates all the time. This has been a topic for years now. As far as I know all they did was push back the age because of the oldest member Seokjin. A final decision has still not been made. BTS do tourism ads for South Korea every year so they are already ambassadors for the country. Also I think it’s worth mentioning that the members never asked to be exempt from mandatory service and have stated that they are willing to go if necessary.
BTS will serve their time in the military & will not take the exemption. They never even asked for it. @8:07 if you're thinking about getting injured before leaving the Marines(not sure about branches) it may not go the way you envisioned. You must have documentation that you we're seen regularly for claimed injury in order to be eligible to claim disability and the military won't discharge you until medical says you're cleared (both a type of method to reduce false disability claims.) And if you do have the injury documented, and the condition gets worse after your discharge, you can still get the disability updated to increase your disability percentage.
They have all stated that they will serve their time, they are just waiting for the government to make their decision. Their agency made an official statement saying that they will not fight their decision but they need an answer soon because it is proving problems for them and their scheduling
There is no way they aren’t. Korean people look down on men that don’t. If you segregate them from half of the Korean population, you’re good as done. Even Psy and Big Bang have served, which in their time were just as big or bigger.
Korea does have built in exemptions, somewhat. Son, a famous football (soccer) player, was scheduled to serve his term in the army. They said if he helped Korea win Gold in the Asian cup Olympic tournament, he would be somewhat exempt. Korea won gold and he served a shorter term.
Honestly, BTS has reached a global level where a 2 year hiatus might be good for them. They get to serve their country and their comeback will most likely be at coachella. The bigger issue is their agency. Their agency does not have a lot of different talent like other agencies do. 2 years of no BTS money coming in? BTS might not have an agency to go back to.

The problem is, BTS wants to serve the military. And its not just those two years. The people who receive special treatment like Gold medalist from the Olympics they are often looked down. If you guys are interested in the South Korean military D.P. on Netflix is pretty accurate apparently.
Korea has exemptions for people who are top in their field and meet certain criteria. So Heuing Min Song who plays in Tottenham was exempt because he won gold in the Asian youth games (which he got a special pass to compete in because he wasn’t a youth). There are other exempt for classical music but none for pop music. Honestly don’t think BTS would take a full exemption, they’ve said before that they’re ready to serve their country when they’re called and never asked for exemption. There was a K pop star American born, got Korean citizenship and wanted to do his two years freaked out at the last minute that he would lose fans and they banned him form Korea. Every couple of years he makes a plea to get back in. He has kids now and he wants to show them Korea but he can’t.
You are talking about Yoo Seung Joon (Steve Yoo). He is not American born, he was born in Korea and was a Korean citizen. However he moved to America when he was young and got a green card. Then he came back to Korea to pursue a career in music. He got famous. But since he was still a Korean citizen, he was required to serve in the military. He repeatedly stated on television and media that he planned to serve. But right before he was supposed to be drafted, he changed his citizenship to U.S. and gave up his Korean citizenship. This act was considered a desertion and he was banned from Korea.
