I feel like it would be a good thing to describe to your audience the difference between a "photo edit" and a "photo manipulation" or "composite image." Most of your "edits" would actually be considered professional composites. Really great job on them. Changing the green to yellow on the jacket really made such an impact. I just think people learn better when they learn the differences in the options you have to edit and still call something a "photo." I use Davinci Resolve professionally and basically manipulate the heck out of images to suit my taste... but there is a difference between a "color grade" and a "composite" in cinematography. In fact, I feel like im forced to composite so much in the film/video marketing world that I prefer my still images un-composited and only edited as if I were using a film-develop-print workflow vs a digital. Maybe you can address the differences sometime? I think it helps people's process and perspectives to know the different options and why someone might choose to NOT composite a photo. Great video, great compositing and re-touching. Cheers!

I don't get it being an art form being able to use a program that someone else has created to manipulate images instead of creating their own. A camera takes an image of what's in front of it. A program can manipulate this image. It can take years to create an actual masterpiece, ten minutes in lightrooms, photoshop etc creates a five second "wow" then its forgotten. Don't misunderstand me, the images created from manipulation are really rather good to see, however they will not last in the mind.
Photography is so subjective. In my view the majority of people way over-edit in post. They spend more time at home trying to correct obvious mistakes than getting it right in-camera at time of taking the shot. Bringing back detail in shadows and slightly increasing contrast and increasing/decreasing saturation are normal to boost an already good image. But sometimes, such as Pete's vision of transforming the 12:56 original into a heavily edited 14:00 image, actually turns a decent shot into a bad one. Also the very heavy crop choices, such as in the landscape shots, really seem at odds with good composition as well as losing image quality. The complete changes of colour (and often unneeded changes) in my view is more akin to painting than photography. But when all is and said and done, the way we capture the original image or edit them, is all down to personal choice. And as Peter mentioned, this was how "he" likes to edit images, so was the correct choices for himself... and above all, he was having fun! Enjoy your photography everyone. :)
Yeah, definitely questioned the cropping choices, especially for landscape shots. I don't think I've ever seen him crop his landscapes, so I wonder why he chose to alter other's shots like that.

Just some constructive criticism: the photo which the mountain came from had its light source coming from the right side of the photo. The original photo has the light source from the left. So in the final edit, there are 2 different sources of light.

Wow you got some mad skills navigating through those menus. However I think that you completely blew or killed some pictures like the squirrel and the desert lady. Just some constructive criticism: the photo which the mountain came from had its light source coming from the right side of the photo. The original photo has the light source from the left. So in the final edit, there are 2 different sources of light.
i noticed that as well
I guess one can flip the mountain pic and then apply it to the original

Yeah the mountain one isnt really my favourite. It doesnt make much sense for that type of mountain to be right there. I feel like it doesnt rly fit in.

13:58 she’s in the dessert..sand everywhere. Then all the sudden..there is a mountain coverd in ice?
What, you haven't been to the ice-hot desert? It's so hot there that the heat freezes the sand. It's crazy.
Well that's what you call Manipulation. Not every manipulation makes sense everytime.
That was really odd...

Dude , Dude . Actually Mr McKinnon I just began watching your videos yesterday I am hooked . I am a 50 year old trying to figure out what to do for my next 50. Wham , there you were on a video I hit by mistake and I am hooked .
Hooked on your personality, your enthusiasm for the craft of creative imagery . I'm lost on half the stuff you say bud dam if I'm not going to work hard on learning it. Thank you for your energy . I want to someday be capable of having great results with video editing and photos .
Keep it up man, this inspires me! Its never to late to start anything. Make your next 50 the best 50!!
You lived only half, go on buddy!

Love to see this comment! Love what you say, Ari. Let's learn!

I liked them, but adding a mountain to a location without any was just bizarre and fake. I don't admire that and found the actual one humble.
JakulaithWolff bruh isn’t that what makes art
I get that it's personal preference, but to me it just kinda looks like hes a putting a cliche snapchat filter on most of them
It depends of your style if you like it or not 👍🏻
I like the implementation of the mountain in the background but you should have flipped it so that the shade is falling in the same direction. But who knows, maybe there are 2 suns in that alternate universe of yours ;)
hahahha hilarious
Did anyone else fall for the ending of this video?? Not gonna lie, it was slightly creepy because I laughed at every part and he spoke to it perfectly... Nicely done Peter. 😂👍

To us Europeans Peter did a nice breakfast video.
Well. So I had something to watch before I start working 4 hours after he uploaded 🤪 btw. You, Peter ans Casey are so great. I’m glad that people like you are on RUclips. Thank you guys for the amazing job you’re doing. Best regards from Germany 🇩🇪
Wow you got some mad skills navigating through those menus. However I think that you completely blew or killed some pictures like the squirrel and the desert lady. I like enhancing and capture the potential of the motive and its surroundings, not picture manipulation. The warmth and livelyness of the squirrel jumping got completely killed with that harsh contrasty looking edit. I wish I had half of your skills running the softwares, but I would never manipulate like that. So to sum up, I love that you teaches out the possibilities and show us what could be done. And also what shouldnt be done. :) So im not hating per say, nor liking this video even though the initiative was dope!
Peter! you did a really great job on that composite image. I just want to suggest flipping the mountain on its y axis since the shadow of the woman and shadows on the mountains don't match up. other that that I would be convinced. great work for real. awesome video!
I was looking for someone who noticed it too lol
Same haha
Ditto. Did not think it needed the mountain at all. Too much competing for the eye. But the shadows....yeah that was setting off my OCD.
Well done dude, those edits looked sick. And great photos from all you talented peeps!
Yes! Lovely edits :)
The way your preset transformed those castle ruins is amazing! Completely gave the scene a whole new vibe. Awesome job, and awesome photo! There are some very talented photographers out there!
Agreed on that one! Might be the best edit in this video.
You just won't learn anything from using presets. Make your own presets once you know your editing style.

Something i dont like about picture editing is that people usually take the "realism" out of the photo, it just doesn't look natural.

OMG, Pete! Why would you think that adding snowy mountain to a perfect desert photo is going to be a good idea? That photo was perfect, divided in half by the horizon, and model's outfit was on that divide line (I think it was photographer's intention), and your totally unnecessary mountain... Awful.
11Pomidorko11 yeah I didn’t love the changing of jacket color in the first one but when he put that mountain in I face palmed so hard. Completely ruined.
