Last Friday, The People's Museum of Limerick played host to a truly one-of-a-kind literary experience - the "Brotherhood" reading by Limerick poets Ron and Greg Carey. The brothers took the stage for an intimate and deeply personal performance, weaving together poignant reminiscences through finely crafted verse. The whole experience was wonderfully accompanied by singer Phila Grace who chose a repertoire of music fitting for the occasion.
The evening unfolded as a narrative tennis match of sorts, with Ron and Greg trading poetic recitations that volleyed between their shared childhood experiences growing up in Limerick and the diverging paths their lives took thereafter. Each poem painted vivid vignettes brimming with nostalgia, humour, and introspection on topics like family, identity, and the inevitability of change.
The reading was graced by a very special guest when the Mayor of Limerick, Cllr. Gerald Mitchell, took the stage towards the end of the night. Mayor Mitchell spoke eloquently about the Carey brothers' achievements and commended how their stirring poetry succeeded in vividly conjuring cherished memories of life in Limerick. His remarks added an extra dimension of civic pride to the already poignant proceedings.
