So how will the Crayola go with realism when they go up against some of the BEST pencils in the world? Let's find out! ruclips.net/video/EyIi_p0Yn44/видео.html
So the comment about trancing vs sketching, I think most artists are half and half. If you're going to sell your artwork, it's typically more accepted to have drawn it, but for studies and practice, a lot of people trace because it saves a huge amount of time and helps you recognise proportions and shapes. Personally I don't see any issue with tracing as long as credit to the original picture is given and the art isn't being sold for commercial use. That being said, if you took you're own reference photo, then even that isn't really an issue.
I agree. If you want to develop sketching skills, then don't trace. If you want to dedicate ten or fifteen hours to the coloured medium, then go ahead and take the shortcut. Further, if you've done everything, including taking the photo, then do whatever you want, however you want.
Say, I trace the general picture(given an anime character) and instead of tracing its clothes from the film, I give them some clothes I think suites them(let's say instead of naruto having his normal anime clothes I gave him sweatpants and a sweater and I change his hair color and style too) is it considered art theft? Or stealing? Or tracing? Is it cheating in art? Is it all that I've mention? I dont know why but I feel guilty if I do it, and it's getting on my nerves latelt
Since you’re more into shading and coloring why not trace? Especially your own photography, it’s all art and technique! I just got done watching a lot of spray painting videos and penalty of people use stencils for one thing or another, they do it because it’s easy and they are so talented they want to work on their favorite area of work not all that other stuff. I personally think you should trace if you’re having a bad time, wether it’s in the quality of work or quality of fun you’re having just keep it fun!!!
I traced all my portraits and they look great at the end result. But I recently sketched out my latest portrait and I was shocked to see what I am now really capable of. Also as you said many artists trace but not all of us admit it 😄
That's the great thing about every medium in art, there are NO rules. Unfortunately, like everything else in life its up for debate in the infamous court of public opinion. I find ways of accepting constructive criticism & suggestions and do my best to tune out the noise that's left. The latter is a lot easier said than done some days!!😆We have enough rules, laws, guidelines & standards to conform to daily. IMO art & the mediums used to express ourselves are the rarebexception to all those. Take care.🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
@@lilydoherty5050 really depends on what you have, I didn’t enjoy tracing off an iPad because I think it’s easy to tape some pictures to a window and trace but I understand that’s kind of hard. DIY light boxes aren’t too hard. Find what feels right for you, also if you have a big computer screen/laptop screen you could totally tape it on those and turn the brightness up like an iPad!! Good luck in what finding what works for you.
I'm late here, but I 100% agree. If you have permission to use the reference, there's no problem with tracing the outline. That's not where the art is, anyway.
exactly, no one can draw perfectly, but a correct baseline is crucial for realism. if the underlying drawing has issues you can't always cover it up by adding color. and even if you do freehand a masterpiece, you didn't do it without a ton of erasing, which will also show up in your final piece. Tracing even if it's just to have a clean sketch to start with can make a massive difference in your end results.
Important (but sad) update: It's been 4 months since I drew this, and I've just looked at the artwork again for the first time in a little while since putting it away. The blending solution has turned yellow over all the artwork, and left a yellow stain all over the back of the page as well - only in the areas that the solution was used. I'm surprised - I watched the video again, wondering if I'd used olive oil or baby oil, and was surprised when it was the zest pencil blend. I'm unsure if the solution I purchased was legit (because it wasn't in the "Zest-It" packaging I expected) but this is something to keep in mind when using any kind of solution. I'll be posting some pictures over on Facebook!
Personally I think there's so much skill involved in rendering that I don't see much of an issue with little bits of tracing, especially when it's hyperrealism! You can't trace your way to a perfect picture without a lot of technical skill as it is. I know I've seen incredible artists who use lightboxes to stylise from real life too! I do think the line blurs when you get into commissions and such - if it's your own photo though I think you'd pretty much fine to trace since you're the original artist of the photo, but if it was someone else's it gets a bit scummy unless it's very basic guidelines or you're stringing references together. Since I work more cartoony, I either go for eyeballing references or using a digital programme to trace some framework if the picture is too complex (and then eyeball that) but that's because I work rather simplistically.
@@jacksonlevy5464 Oh, yeah I forgot about those! I'd agree since that's the expectation :D I was thinking like "as a reference for something your commissioner expects you to come up with"
What really amaze me is, how an artist can get fabulous results from cheap art supplies as Crayola, even if it takes 25 more hours ! Thanks so much for sharing this video ! Congrats for your 50K subscribers ! You deserved much more.
About tracing, I learnt to outline through sketching and using grid methods so I can and understand how to draw an image properly, however, because it takes so long I often quickly trace an outline so I get the right sizes and proportions and then sketch in details after. I think it’s important to know but I don’t think tracing matters too much when it’s the final result that matters and how you use the colour etc after you’ve done the outline 🤷♀️
Sarah, you are so easy to watch! You're genuine, easy going, talented and fun! I'm not a person who experiments with stuff, i don't want to "ruin" or "waste" stuff..its weird I know! But you have reminded me that trying stuff out, especially in art is what art is really for!! It’s actually quite common, not weird at all! It takes courage to take risks, and it takes practice to become ok with failing sometimes! But it always results in a better learning experience x
It depends on the Artist, the Skill sets, and the understanding of the medium for Tracing. In both an Artist and Art Historian perspective: Animation? They trace all the time. It's faster, quicker, and it saves time to get proportions right and goes to the next part of movement. Realism NORMALLY is actually using a grid, but sometimes tracing just makes it easier to get to the main point of the medium (ie: oil painting.) and was done even by famous artists in the far past. (Through the reflecting the glass method actually, as Viemire is a good example of doing this because he wanted to take away less time with sketching out the the landscape and backgrounds for his works as it's the person that was the focus of the paintings). There's also the transfer method which is kinda a half and half method for some cases. Tracing is also good to learn how to draw something. You follow the lines of the thing you are trying to learn to draw and do it a few times as you see the differences of each attempt and then try drawing. The biggest no in my own personally opinion when Tracing is *not* okay is you trace someone else's artwork, with no changes to the piece whatsoever, and then call it your art and that you drew it from start to finish. That is stealing. There's no reference to the other person you took it from in this case and you're taking *all* the credit. You would have been okay in tracing your reference piece through the transfer method because your focus was the coloring, not the drawing.
I definitely agree on the tracing, people never need my permission to trace my work (I think it's stupid that artists expect others to ask them for permission), but I expect them to be honest to give credit for the work.
Crayolas are a colored pencil that requires real body workout, just like an Vintage Car, that doesn´t come with all those nice assists like modern ones. But they are no lost cause and been around for a long time for a reason. And if you master them, quite nice. Congrats on 50k, Sarah and more to come 👏
This picture makes me want to draw with colored pencils. It looks so good. It was a lot of work but I’m glad you made it super colorful like that. Also it’s crazy to me that you only have 50k. That’s not to minimize that, 50k is a ton, I would just think you’d have more because of your video quality. I wouldn’t be surprised if you do hit 100k by the end of the year.
I do both, i am not that good at proportions but doing some tracing actually helps me and starts of my muscle memory. The thing is everyone is different. Also how different people do different things. It maybe different if you are actually selling your work or putting it up for auction etc. I have no idea i have never sold anything. It can also be personal preference, also any disabilities the person might have *me personally i have hyperaphantasia* so also tracing is a kind of workaround. HUGE Congrats on 1 year old and 50K+ i am so glad i have found your channel and watch as much as i can when i can, you are such an inspiration. Can't wait to see what the next year will bring! Love from Australia
Congratulations on your achievement x I was really interested in your view about tracing….I’m new to art and use tracing when the colouring is intricate and the outline is altered. I was mesmerised by your drawing only dream a being able to do realistic drawing like you x
Sarah, I LOVE Your channel! I can't believe you've only been doing this for a year! You seem like a RUclips PRO already! I want to thank you for getting me interested in coloring again. I've always loved to color, and my sisters and I LOVE to do so when we are able to get together for a Sister's Girl's Night (infortunately, 2020 put a damper on that!) but I now have a desire, no a NEED to color again and your videos trying out different colored pencils have really helped me to decide which I want to start with! SO, THANK YOU AGAIN for your chanenl and your desire to share your talent and knowledge with us! I'm so happy for your channel's success so far and I look foward to watching your channel continue to grow.
I don't think tracing is inherently bad or wrong. I think it's good if you're trying to get muscle memory down to become a better artist. I'm an artist but I also enjoy coloring so I will trace coloring pages on to better paper so I can use my supplies and get some muscle memory down as well. I never take credit for drawing the image, and credit whatever artist actually designed the piece. I think it's good that you actually drew it, even if you used some guides from the image because there's a lot of detail in those balloons. It's also good to show the process and to discuss this because I'm sure many people will say it's "cheating". Anyhow, Congrats on 50k!
No matter what you do you always make it look fun. Tracing is always allowed Sarah. And you really make me laugh a lot. Never a dual moment! What a show. Love Terri Simmers.
I love drawing with budget pencils. For me it's okay, if you use something like arteza pencils, castle art or something similar. Best wishes and congratulate again.
Tracing something can still be art! It’s a good way to start identifying shapes, shadows, and depth. You can also collage different pictures together to make something more unique, then use a bright window or light box to trace!
I didn't realize it's only been a year! Holy cow woman. Congrats to you on that 50k for sure!!! As for tracing there are times I might sketch something and then trace it out of my book into watercolor paper but I already drew it once. But I really think what matters is what you want. Art is supposed to be fun and if sketching it out isn't, then trace.
Congrats on 50k! I'm quite new to this channel, I think I just started watching your channel a week or 2 ago? These few days have been quite fun though, watching (or kinda binging) your videos. Once again, congratulations, and i hope you reach 100k soon.
Drawing is an important skill but imo tracing is totally fine if your art focuses on color and shading, like with pencils or paint. Drawing should absolutely still be practiced! But especially when the composition and reference is your own, trace it to speed up the process!
I love the idea of using cheap tools, as it clearly shows that when someone is good at what they are doing, they will create wonders. I constantly try to keep in mind to not blame imperfect work on my materials, as all my life I've only used the fabric-castell classic set and nothing else, can't afford anything better. But they have felt good enough, so I haven't experimented with other brands either. Seeing you use these crayola pencils motivates me to keep working on improving my skills, and one day I will have the pencils that I've always wanted
3:31 i use grid methods for my own drawing but if it was a school project or something i don't have enough time to draw so i use tracing method sometimes but even with tracing you can tell if someone can draw or not from the way they trace
Thanks Sarah. I loved this one. I think I have come close to watching every video. I have been a follower for at least the year but I think longer. I now cant wait for you diary to arrive so I can start coloring in that. I look forward to more of your videos and emails arriving. Congrats on the 50K
Well done Sarah (and Shane) I love your channel and your humour and how genuine you are, plus your creativity of course! 100k is totally do-able by the end of the year!!!
tracing helped me so much with proportions when i finally allowed myself to trace,, now i tell the ones i teach to do it, muscle memory is always a good thing to develop & it speeds up the work time so that one can get their art out on the time line that many want.
ONLY A YEAR?? AND YOU'RE HERE?? Wow! Congrats!!! I love how the artwork turned out. And all your numerous expressions throughout this video. Can clearly make out how happy you r! 😂 I was wondering if you could make the pic you clicked available somewhere for us to download and try colouring as well.
Wow Sarah I didn't realise it's only been a year! Congratulations on 50K subscribers; you deserve so many more. I really love your channel, your videos are informative, entertaining and you help so many people by sharing your skills. Thank you 😊 Regarding tracing, I totally agree with you. I can draw, I enjoy drawing but I much prefer colouring and shading so depending on the type of work I am doing I use outline tracing. I especially use it when doing commissions such as pet portraits. Partly because it saves many hours and partly because accuracy is extremely important for realism and likeness. Many artists, including some of the masters, throughout history have used tracing techniques such camera obscura.
Hi Sarah ! Congrats for the 50k !! You deserve so much more ! Little tip for the tracing part : I tried the grid method a few times and it works really well, I do this with pretty narrow lines (like 1/2 inch or 1cm) in order to have the maximum accuracy and it worked every time ! I totally recommand ! You can do it directly on your phone/PC or on your printed reference picture
Howdy and happy day!!! & Many CONGRATULATIONS!!! Thanks for all the videos and all the hard work!! (Thanks for the great editing to Shane too) I think that if tracing is “cheating” then so is using a reference. So what I mean to say is, I heard this cool RUclipsr once insist that there are no rules in art. ;) Do what you can, & have fun! :)
That drawing is amazing. Such beautiful colours. Congratulations. Your channel has always felt very well established. I had no idea it was less than a year old.
When I was taking commissions and each picture time is money I used every tool available to me. From projectors to tracing papers even graphite papers I used them ALL! If I am creating original art work, I like to sketch and move into painting from there. I recently started working with soft pastels and I created multiple versions of a portrait of my wife. They are all from a photograph I took at my brothers wedding. I made a graph and transferred the image once, then moving to velour paper I used a projector enlarging the image more than the graph. I even used the graphite rub technique on the back of a laser print to create several versions of one size on different papers. Creating Art is a personal journey and developing your skills is necessary and only you can determine how good each skill you need to master to create each individual art piece. I have worked as a photographer and have taken hundred of thousands of photos. I still go out an snap a new reference just to avoid going through books of old photos! Congratulations on your 50K and I hope your not long in reaching your next goal! The End segment was quite cute and very fun! Good Luck!
Congratulations 🎉 it is inspiring to hear how far you have come within a year or getting serious about making RUclips videos. Thanks for sharing so many great videos with the rest of us. Best of luck reaching 100k, I am sure you will reach it!
Congrats Sarah! I've been here since the first 1k of subs and I am so proud of your growth. You have worked so hard and I'm so happy to see that it is paying off! I've loved watching you grow as a self taught artist. Fantastic motivation
On the tracing vs not, i get a lot of commissions for comic book cover recreations or portraiture so when im doing those i do trace specific parts such as (CB recreation) logo, character positions and such and (portraiture) i do outline tracing and eye placement just to make sure i get the eye locations correct, but overall the amount of tracing i do compared to the actual drawing is minimal. Most of it is to make sure i get specific parts correct so it doesnt throw off the entire image lol
Don’t ask yourself how you’ve reached 50k subscribers… the answer is so easy and that is, drumroll please….. you are an amazing artist and you are so fun to watch. Because you don’t just show us your greatest achievements, you also show us your struggles and you’re not afraid of laughing of yourself when you’ve done something that you think a “real” artist might not do. So it makes you more approchable and more human ( if you know what I mean). Since I have discovered you, you are my favourite RUclipsr and it puts a smile on my face when I get notified that you have posted a new video. After each episode, I get out one of my colouring books or my sketchbook and away I go! You are such an inspiration! So CONGRATULATIONS FOR REACHING 50k and I have no doubt you will reach 100k before the end of December! Signing off from Quebec, Canada!
Congratulations! I hope you get more and more along the way! 💞💞 In terms of realism, I never traced and learned how to do the proportions by observation of real people and photos! My art teachers' criticism was also very helpful! So I learned how to do excellent graded works of realism cuz of that! I advice you to not trace at all and instead reference only and learn things in by observation! Believe me! It's kinda of a slow process but it really pays off! 😊💞
Congrats, love your channel! No way to ever be in the running for the prize, but good luck to those who are. No doubts in you doubling your subscriber in record time also. Again, happy 50k, enjoy your success!

Congratulations on 50K Sarah! There was no doubt in my mind that you would be at 50K very quickly! I'm rooting for you to hit 100K by the end of 2021!! I know you can do it! You put so much time into the production and editing of your videos. You deserve this so much! Keep up the fantastic work!

Thank you for the lovely comments!!
It turned out Beautiful ! Congratulations on 50k 🎊🎉
Love your approach to colored pencils. I am new am very excited to learn about the use of colored pencils. Thank you for being there for all of us.
Wow!!! Love your drawing!!! Amazing!!!! Congrats on 50k!!!
It was so satisfying watching you add those white highlights!
Tracing is absolutely fine - that's why light boxes exist.
Tracing something can still be art! It’s a good way to start identifying shapes, shadows, and depth. You can also collage different pictures together to make something more unique, then use a bright window or light box to trace!
I can't believe it's only a year. Congratulations on your Anniversary as well as 50K!!! You are such an inspiration to watch and learn from.
I love watching your channel. I have learned so much from watching you. You are a good artist. Don’t ever stop. Also, I love your accent.
It’s amazing what you were able to achieve with the Crayolas. And happy RUclips Anniversary!
Congratulations Sarah for hitting 50K! Love watching your videos and seeing your challenges turn into amazing works of art!
💜💜💜tfs💜💜💜 congrats on 50K and happy unofficial anniversary!
tracing helped me so much with proportions when i finally allowed myself to trace,, now i tell the ones i teach to do it, muscle memory is always a good thing to develop & it speeds up the work time so that one can get their art out on the time line that many want.
awesome job btw
Congrats on 50k! Love the colorful balloons 😍
Tracing paper and embosser are my best friends.
Oh Sarah, you're doing a stunning job!!!
Congrats on 50K. That looks amazing!
I don't think tracing your own work is "cheating". It's just another tool to use. I would definitely like to see more realistic drawings.
Beautiful, love the colors! Congratulations on reaching your halfway mark!!
Thank you!
ONLY A YEAR?? AND YOU'RE HERE?? Wow! Congrats!!!
I love how the artwork turned out. And all your numerous expressions throughout this video. Can clearly make out how happy you r! 😂
I was wondering if you could make the pic you clicked available somewhere for us to download and try colouring as well.
Happy 50k now all you need is 100k and it's a victory by the way can you please review winsor and newton colored pencil love you sarah💗💗
Congratulations Sarah! Loved the video!
Sarah's an artistic genius!!!! It's like she's used paint, instead of colored pencils!!!!! INCREDIBLE!!!!
Wow Sarah I didn't realise it's only been a year! Congratulations on 50K subscribers; you deserve so many more. I really love your channel, your videos are informative, entertaining and you help so many people by sharing your skills. Thank you 😊
Regarding tracing, I totally agree with you.
Happy 50,000! Sarah Renae 👍👏👏👏🌹
Happy 50k! I laughed so hard because I also put a blending stump on a sharpener 😂, now I use an emery nail board! That’s an amazing coloring page!
I learn so uch from you and love your honesty!! I am so happy for you ! Well done!!!!
Congratulations 🎉 and happy channel birthday 🎂!!!
I have just gone for tracing and I'm glad you endorsed it.
Great finished project. Thanks for the education!
You did a fantastic job with this drawing! I love it! Yes, I'd definitely like to see you do more stuff like this!
And congratulations on 50K!
I love watching and learning so much. Congrats!
Congrats Sarah, nice job keep up the good work.
Congrats for 50k
We're half way to the 100k milestone
It turned out great
Howdy and happy day!!! & Many CONGRATULATIONS!!! Thanks for all the videos and all the hard work!! (Thanks for the great editing to Shane too)
I think that if tracing is “cheating” then so is using a reference.
So what I mean to say is, I heard this cool RUclipsr once insist that there are no rules in art. ;) Do what you can, & have fun! :)
That drawing is amazing. Such beautiful colours. Congratulations. Your channel has always felt very well established. I had no idea it was less than a year old.
Happy 50,000 subscribers! Congratulations!
I honestly believe that she deserves 50k, in cold hard cash, for this drawing alone, LITERALLY!!!!
The colouring is amazing. Love watching your videos.
Congrats Sarah! I've been here since the first 1k of subs and I am so proud of your growth. You have worked so hard and I'm so happy to see that it is paying off! I've loved watching you grow as a self taught artist. Fantastic motivation
Thank you!
You do amazing art! PERIOD
This came out so beautifully!
I enjoyed watching you do your thing. Will keep watching to see what comes next. Congratulations on your success. !!
Happy anniversary. I’m so glad i found your channel
Congratulations your channel is growing fantastically xx You have taught me a lot, I love your channel 😍 xx
Thank you for the lovely comments!
Congrats on 50K. Love your video
Oh and gratitude to Shane
Your content is wonderful and the editing is too
Congratulations! I hope you get more and more along the way! 💞💞
In terms of realism, I never traced and learned how to do the proportions by observation of real people and photos! My art teachers' criticism was also very helpful! So I learned how to do excellent graded works of realism cuz of that!
I advice you to not trace at all and instead reference only and learn things in by observation!
Believe me! It's kinda of a slow process but it really pays off! 😊💞
Absolutely love the colours! Congrats 😍
Love your channel. Congratulations on 50k!!! The drawing looks awesome.
Congrats on 50k+! Love the challenges!
Congrats on 50K. And may there be millions more.
Congrats, love your channel! No way to ever be in the running for the prize, but good luck to those who are. No doubts in you doubling your subscriber in record time also. Again, happy 50k, enjoy your success!
Woahhhh... This is the most detailed balloon drawing i've ever seen/watch

Adult coloring books@@SarahRenaeClark
Thanks for everything it gets me to draw more congrats on 50k great master piece
I want to thank you for ... mentioning Bluey in that past video. Maybe it's silly -- I don't even have kids -- but that show was so cute, and so hilarious, and I marathoned it with my SO. And upon seeing Bluey's blue tongued skink plushies, I had to share it with a bunch of friends. So thank you. Haha. I think I need a Bluey coloring book.
