Assembly tip...go to the office supply store and get yourself some clear plastic folder sleeves. When your putting the piston in the drum, put two sleeves inside the drum. One on the inside (small diameter)and one on the outer side and your piston will slide right in. You will have less chance of cutting the seal than if you use a feeler guage or seal knife.
Man I was happy to see this video pop up, although I watch all of your content. Just so happens I just got my 1.58s from sonnax and need to get them installed. They are very proud of the 1.58s by the way! I’ve never been in a power glide but after watching this, I’m gonna give it a try.
You can put 2 clutches on top of each other because their splined they won’t spin on each other I have taken the material off of one side of 2 clutches and put them metal to metal to get the right clearance
John you know 1000x more than I'll ever know but I did work a GM parts counter and sold transmission parts. Its called ( just for anyone interested when they go to order one) a Parking Pawl pronounced like a guys name "Paul". Great video's keep on kicking but buddy!
Hey TJ, thanks again for going through step by step on building a powerglide. I built my first ever powerglide by your video, all tested well, I went 5.3's in the 1/8th on motor. Thanks again
First of all you are one of my favorite youtubers and have been watching you since the beginning...honestly respect the fact that you do such a wide array of your own stuff...that being said, i build race powerglides for a living and so much is wrong here...a transmission, much like an engine, is not a good place to do the old "that's close enough, i think it;ll work" thing. For one your leaving a lot on the table performance wise and secondly with the expensive parts that go in one of these units if not installed properly it will hurt if not kill their lifespan. Respectfully, i hope no one builds their transmission like this.
@@TurboJohnRacing to tight in reverse, to loose in high, you never showed a gov support(im assuming you installed one), never checked high hub end play, those cases have a ton of variance in servo bore depth and there are specs that differ based on pressures you'll run, there are a few other things but not to give away trade secrets, lol....and you put park pawl spring backwards, lol, although it seemed to work. The thing is, it'll work i'm sure...it's just not gonna be as good as it could be buddy...i'm close in NC, if you ever want me to help you or your program look me up on f-book and i'd be happy to assist
You are quite the transmission man you’re good I don’t understand why you live down there and you don’t live up here in Ohio we need people up here like Great video very helpful
Nice overview. The last Trans I built was 4l60e for my daily Rado. Used alto reds and kolene steels and full width band kit from summit. Did the upgraded shell, double sprag I think from borg warner, vette servo kit, valve body kit. It works great and hope it stands up to pulling car trailers well. I was just thinking the other day I'd like to try a glide for my car I'm going to race. That's way easier to build than a 60e. Thanks for the video buddy.
I was always told to soak the clutches over night to let the saturate, then check your clearances. Just from how I was told to do it, I know everyone has there own preferences. I have not done a glide only th400 th350 and 2004r. One last note I was always told to use loctite 518 on transmissions not silicone. I know splitting hairs.
Always good videos TJ but the park pawl is in backwards and you should loosen your reverse clutches up some more as it will drag on the clutches being to tight . Also need to tighten up your high gear clutch are they are to loose .
on a side note... dry clutches on assy is a bad thing.. good idea to soak the things prior to assy.. this looks pretty dry but going to guess it was dried out a bit for video..
What's next? Well, I always just scrape all the leftover parts into a coffee can (preferably empty) just in case you find you need them to get the car rolling. :-)
The minimum clearance is critical to avoid clutch drag. You have to remember they are wet clutches and the film is what makes it slip like a bearing when it's disengaged. More clearance puts delay in the engagement but it will grab the same until it hits the piston travel limit.
Why are Ford guys always downing other manufacturers, they all have their up's and downs, just because the LS makes power and has a long life for little money doesn't mean you have to hate it, no one is stopping you from building a Ford.
The engineer who designed the aluminum 2 speed PG was a freaking genius of common sense 💪
Can't get over how simple the transmission are, simple is better in some applications for sure.

Nice, that’s a great idea! Thanks
Sweet tip!
I'll try that next time. I used a wire hoop installer and the feeler gage. Both were stressful but I got it. Thanks brother
Dig that idea. I thought what good is a feeler if you still slice 1 of your rings on it going in.
3:15 parking pawl, pronounced like the man's name Paul. You are welcome.
AWESOME VIDEO JOHN...!!!!! DOUBLE G. HERE...!!!!!
Clear as mud, I should be able to do a transmission rebuild now! What's the worst that could go wrong!? Hold my beer, I got this!
I rebuilt one of these when I was 20 years old for a 64 stingray I bought cheap. It went smoothly and worked perfectly.
Hi John, Great video, learned allot about the Aluminum powerglide. by the way the parking PAWL is just that, not a parking prawl.

Damn John I had no idea you were a transmission man. Nice 💪🔥👍
I’m not, lol

Using your video and two others I built a glide end of 2020 and that thing just keeps on taking a beating. Love these transmissions
I love when you do this video almost every year!

I’m always learning! What did we do wrong? What will cause it to fail?
Anton, please educate us?

I'll be the slow new edge out there. Haha
Great video John and you did a awesome job explaining everything!!!
Holy shit you even do transmissions?!?! I'm surprised that I'm even surprised. You are a legend, TJ
I’m a hack, lol
He’s our hero. TJ is awesome guy 👍👍
Damn good video John and u did a good job going over it very well Thanks 👍

Very helpful video John. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I’m currently switching over to a PG and was looking for a good walk through video.
Turbo John got so much knowledge 🤌🏾💪🏾💪🏾

Parking paw lol driving me crazy great video John I have had issues with the seal's being old and leaking with kits.
Nice trans Build John !!
Parking Pawl it has no R in it LOL!! Anyway 2 spd glides are really simple difficulty goes up the more gears you have in the trans
Beautiful video keep up the good work
Great video John! I plan on building my own powerglide soon and this was much needed information! Thanks! 💯
VERY NICE TURBO JOHN GOOD JOB 👌👍🙂▶️👍🙂▶️
Thanks for making this! Super helpful and thanks for the TJ hat! It’s a nice quality hat
Hope y’all didn’t forget that inner seal on the high gear drum. Didn’t see one but you changed clips. I guess we’ll find out.
Yes, we put it in.
I like that jig holding the trans
on a side note... dry clutches on assy is a bad thing.. good idea to soak the things prior to assy.. this looks pretty dry but going to guess it was dried out a bit for video..
He did the initial fitting dry but then had Mike go soak the clutches. At least that’s what I heard…
Yes, they soaked
Only addition, I would have dunked the planetary in the red stuff before I stuffed it in the case.
Great information! Can’t wait to blow up my glide too watch this video and fix it 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for another great video!
Nice job 👍
Awesome video john very helpful 👍
awesome video TJ 👍👍
Man who races on his own dime needs to be resourceful and learn to do as much as he can himself. 👌
Thanks for the education class on trans
Check out precision transmission they make great videos !
Great video, always great content!
I sure would like to have that torque wrench he’s got
I was surprised to see the clutches installed dry I was always told to soak them
My bad commented before you got to the soak
When is a powerglide more desirable over a turbo 400?
It’s a parking PAWL!! (Sounds like Paul) there is no R!! Lol😂
My slang (poor grammar) will get you guys all the time, 😂
Awesome content keep it up
Thanks TJ!
Pawl.
😂
@@TurboJohnRacing You said you were sure someone would correct you. 😂🤣
TJ you’re a pretty smart man why are not making more money lol!!!!
What fluid are you running?
thank you
What is a parking prowl?
Perfect… now let’s do mine 🙂
What was the torque on the valve body?
I soak my clutches before assembly.
What's next? Well, I always just scrape all the leftover parts into a coffee can (preferably empty) just in case you find you need them to get the car rolling. :-)
That looks scary and I've been wrenching since 7yrs old.
The parking pawl is pronounced like the name “Paul”...
Parking PAWL pronounced PAUL

Come on John a power glide race ready from flexplate to yoke race ready should put a 14,000.00 hole in you're wallet 🤑
👍🏽💯👍🏽

Slip and slid powerglide
