Long ago as a kid I watched a race in which one of the trotters went down due to a heart attack and died right there on the course. No laughing matter, to no one, I assure you.
@loraleypike In pacing-bred Standardbreds, pacing is a natural gait. As youngsters, this gait is further engrained with the use of hobbles--and horses often train and race with them always(although some are free-legged too) Hobbles are used more to help the horse support his gait at high speeds than anything else. Now that trotters are getting closer to sub-50 miles you're seeing practically entire fields wearing trotting hobbles now too--when a trotter wearing hobbles used to be a rarity.
I see the older horses in the paddock pace 'naturally' and even some horses pace in work without hopples but my guess its because they are trained to do it from the start. Though I have never seen a young horse prior to breaking moving about trotting or pacing in the paddock. So from my experience I don't think its natural but I don't know enough to really tell.
Good jockey, poor horse, but at least he is ok cuz of his jockey he kept the horse from thrashing around and getting hurt or possibly getting himself killed
In harness racing the "pilot" is referred to as a driver, not a jockey...not trying to be a smart-ass just correcting your terminology. Anyone worth their salt handling horses does exactly as he did..quick thinking for sure :)
I work in two different training stables and from what I have seen all young horses that are first put in harness are put straight into the hopples. They are trained to pace from a very young age.
@Beatlegirl4eva lol yeah, i mean there are some that can race without hopples, but they are one in a thousand. most cant sustain speed without them. people on here who say its abuse and stuff are so full of it. like to have them see how spoiled and loved my racers are. lol
This was the freakiest thing - he was fine and the next minute on the track.O'Donnell was interviewed for TV within minutes of this happening and the reporter asked "how do you feel?" To which O'Donnell replied "How the $#%# do you think I feel?" This had to be devastating for all the connections - he may have been a little horse, but Robust was certainly given the right name.
I go to buffalo raceway to zane...I seen the horse fall... He had heart attack was kinda sad...SINCE i was standing right there...Cant remember his name...But he was out of Nobleland Sam
Shit yea...these horses are like tanks!!! I've seen some bad accidents, and unlike the Thoroughbreds with toothpick legs, the standardbreds come out fine 99% of the time, with maybe some stitches.....the reason the driver got on the horses head was so the horse don't try to get up and possibly injure himself by getting tangled up in all the equipment they wear. The grooms/trainer got there, or possibly other grooms, to get the equipment off, and then they get the horse on his or her feet and walk her back to the paddock, where the horse will NOT race, thus a VERY EASY night for Robust Hannover.....instead of laying in his stall tired all day tomorrow, he will be rearing to go in the AM!!!!
Is that because they are taught to do it from a very young age? I've never seen a STB foal or young horse prior to breaking in and training that will naturally choose to pace rather than trot.
Very very wrong..The baby paces or trots naturally, they follow the mom, yes they can gallop too, but more often, most train at high speeds freelegged..but for races the hobbles just to make sure they dont mistep, and the hobbles are very loose if you look close to legnthen the stride, I am a former trotting horse owner, and had a few weanings from pacing mares to see.
I imagine having its legs tied like that wouldnt have helped, and would most likely have prevented the horse righting itself after a stumble. Probably the reason it went down, it couldnt get its legs out to stabilise itself. Lucky it wasnt going at any major speed, otherwise the outcome may have been completely different.
I guess all those camels giraffes and zebras are well trained.....it is a natural gait for some horses from birth. Also, many trotters wear hopples nowadays....there are several horses that perform as trotters AND pacers.
Unfortunately I have to divulge that they were not okay as the horse ended up succumbing to his injuries and dying of old age 17 years later and Bill was never the same as he too died somewhere 29 years from now.
omfg wow i am a litle confused the horse looked fine :S:S:S wow i worked at the track over 7 years i never saw anything like this and im sooo prob of the driver to hold his head down thumbs up
beatlegirl- the pace is a MANMADE stride , DUH . and hey at least o'donnel did not drop the whip in one of the most important races ever..... o wait.... he did that as well once.
Sometimes animals stumble and fall. That includes humans. The horse wasn't hurt, and he was just being held down to keep him from injuring himself on the equipment as he got backup
nope just his pride. Those post parades get horses all a-flutter, and he just tripped himself. But pacing horses don't seem happy like trotters and flat racers. We don;t need to tie a leg to another leg to make a false gait!
In my opinion every horse sport is dangerous. Dressage is the "safest", horse racing is the most dangerous kind of horse sport. But danger is danger. I have been reading in a book about a horse which died. A Cross - Country - horse. What was the danger? The rider! The rider is ALWAYS the guy who did the mistake. Always. The problem here was that the horse were still running after he goes down with the first legs. And then it didn´t move.....
@@christinefabritz6352 Sorry, but for me harness racing is cruelty to animals and an absolutely idiotic sport. But unfortunately some people need the feeling of power at least over one living being (often because they are rather incapable of more meaningful intellectual achievements).
This is an amazing video with commentary about the how's and why's the jockey did that. Impressive handling skill.
I was there when this happened.
When interviewed, O'Donnell was asked, "just a little bad luck?"
"No shit.", was his reply.

Excuse me, was Robust Hanover OK? It looked like the driver held him down quickly enough but nothing was posted in the description.
Think he was fine he just stumbled over the jockey just held him down to stop him going crazy and hurting himself

@Beatlegirl4eva um pace is definatly a manmade gate. thats why pacers wear hopples.
