Remember watching this game... I was in 10th grade.15 years old...when Monday night Football was REALLY special..AFC-West was one of the toughest divisions in football... grew up a Broncos fan in the late 70s...Broncos defense even with-out Lyle Alzado was still one of the best in football..

Please people don't tell me San Diego was/is a bad football town.Just listen to the crowd - do hear that now in LA? All i hear is the stadium announcer along with the broadcasters saying how the crowd is 60/40 split for the road team.
We loved this team. I was there from 7 years old through the decades. This 79 season was my first year back after having to leave SD in 71. What joy - charlie was great. The team was hurt though with Jefferson and winslow out. Thats what hurt in playoffs. The last game of 78 they beat the Oilers 41 to 17 or whatever. Killed them in Houston. We supported them when they were bad - which was most often especially after Klein left. even the first years of the new stadium there were many sell outs. For preseason games even. The colts came in 1970 preseason w/Johnny U and Mackie and Bubba smith - there was 51,000 plus. This was a pre - expansion sellout. The Chargers had a solid 52,000 plus season ticket base for 40 years or more. Sell the team Dean and let them come back to where they belong…
btw I remember this night - Field section 41 row 15 seats 7 & 8 - the first time we won since the merger… and yes the damn Houston game - 17-14 The one mistake before Don came was getting rid of Joe Washington for Lydel Mitchell. Joe was the perfect Coryell player. Joe Gibbs - Offensive coordinator for Don went to coach the redskins and low and behold Joe does great things for him. Love this film of this game - thanks for showing but it breaks my heart. This was San Diegos team. Always will be.

Dan fouts breaks joe namath's record for passing yards in a season, becoming only the 2nd qb to ever throw for 4,000 yards in a season

It must have been the song San Diego Super Chargers, that was set to an obnoxious disco beat, that jinxed them

When the NFL used to play MNF on the last week. Not only do the Broncos lose the game and the division but on a short week they have to go to Houston to play the Oilers in the Wild Card Game. That never happens anymore.

Classic hard hitting desperate game. Neither team wanted Houston, but they both got Houston, and got both of them....and sent them both home. Denver because Morton had another horrible game, and San Diego, Fouts, in his first playoff game wet the bed, and they went down. Reality, tells us that Houston was just a hair and better QB play from knocking down Pittsburgh, and it goes to show, you can win games on the regular season with a mediocre QB, but in the playoffs, that QB had better show up, if not...you're going home early

Very true! That Houston game was the worst loss in SD history (and that's saying something). But, they were in their first playoff game and got cocky - especially with all the injuries Houston had. I suppose better t have team that choked than not to have one at all. Sigh.

Denver ran option play with 80 yr old, slower than the mummy Craig Morton. ROF!😂

The Broncos love for Craig Morton cost Denver championships. They had a championship defense, and in the end, Red Miller paid the price for Mortons sucky QB play.

I would ask who the Broncos should have tanked for, but outside of Joe Montana in 79, there was a sort of QB desert from Bert Jones (1973) through the Class of 1983, mainly because the big college programs either ran option/wishbone or had game manager types. Hence the BYU crew, less polished products like Phil Simms and Doug Williams, and busts like Rich Campbell and Jack Thompson getting picked.

@@urbanleftbehind Yeah, it's not like Denver had a lot of options. The best new QB's of that era were probably Grogan, Kramer, Zorn, Bartkowski... Plus, Denver had a roster full of 2nd and 3rd team running backs. No ground game to take any pressure off the passing game.

Agree but in his defense on that interception that was a terrible route by Upchurch

well it was on #73, who jumped early. It was actually a false start..but at the time, it may have been called offsides..i'm unsure. Could have just used the wrong terminology
