A couple of interesting trivia bits about a couple of the stations you went through. The Basel Bad station was built by the state railway of the Grand Duchy of Baden at the request of Basel who wanted a connection to the German railways heading north. To this day the station and the tracks leading to it from Germany are owned by the Deutsche Bahn (the German railway company). Meanwhile, the Altona station was built when the city of Altona was not only not part of Hamburg, but not part of Germany either. When it was first built, Altona was the largest city in the Duchy of Holstein, and was actually ruled by the King of Denmark. That's why it is a dead end station with the tracks pointing north to Denmark.
and that dead end station will be put down until 2021 and replaced with a trainstation close by Diebsteich...that is the reason why the current Altona station is run down.
Im sorry i have to correct you, but thats not the ÖBB. Those are from Austria and you traveled with sbb cff ffs. That's the counterpart from switzerland.😅 Besides that it was a great video 😀
I repaired those trains in Basel many years ago, absolutely nightmare to work on these trains. But its nice to see ppl enjoy the trains now, seems it has been worth the effort.
The engineers and the parts repair team certainly make it work..I have not visited Switzerland even when I was in Europe. Hope to work as a developer or do computer science research in the future even when i was studying in Munich..
Love the towel. Austria in general seems to have this quality where absolutely every random thing is designed with understated flair. Your kitchen taps, your umbrella, your bath towels, they're all just a bit more stylish in Austria than they are in the rest of the world.
What a relaxed chilled and civilised way to travel, it looks an amazing product. I've just returned from Germany and remember seeing these trains in both Hamburg and Berlin Hauptbahnhof. Great video as always Paul.
I made a trip Hamburg-Basel in a standard sleeper. The deluxe sleeper has way much space, my biggest problem was where to put my things. And I was lucky to make the trip in very good wheather, 25-30 degree in both Hamburg and Basel, so needed very little clothing. I can't imagine doing this in winter with coats, jackets, boots and so on.
But it is way too expensive? Ok, I can not afford it. But if you make the price cheaper, you get the unwashed masses (like me) who use this service. Litter everywhere, cut the seats, graffiti, rude behavior, theft and more. So rather keep the prices high. It is the only "legal" way to separate class.
I really enjoy your trip reports, especially train trips in continental Europe. Your videography makes me eager with anticipation to get back traveling post-COVID. Thank you!
I have only recently discovered Paul's videos and really enjoy them. I prefer the more recent ones because they have more of Paul. He has such a lovely voice and style.
Yeah. They were introduced back in 1997 where they became a daily sight on the Denmark-Germany servuces. I travelled on these sleepers before. Very comfortable, but ironically the lower-deck compartments are some of the most cramped and uncomfortable compartments you can find on a european night train. xD
Twenty years ago, I rode an overnight train from Hamburg to Karlsruhe. My accommodation was in a conventional sleeper which was laid out like a pre WWII era streamlined Pullman with 13 double bedrooms.
Paul, thank you for posting these videos. Some of the things I missed I can see through your eyes. Thank you also for not having the inane music added to your videos. Pure class!
Paul, if you haven't already, take the train from Milan to Zurich. It's a nice distance (I remember it being about 3-4 hours), and the scenery is glorious.
Brings back happy Interail travel on night trains in the 80s. You'd soon have a conversation with others in the compartment and leave in the morning having enjoyed the experience. Trains are also centre to centre with none of the increasing hassle of airports.
Awesome job! We are catching the nightjet from Vienna to Milan and your video was very helpful. We are booking the compartment for 2 people and your video has made us even more excited!
Amtrak still has a couple sleeper routes I believe but then of course Trump and his administration wants to get rid of any exotic tourism aspects of our government. Its unbelievable that the Americans cant get 280 KPH trains like this guy can.
+Crazy Clown America is the world's number one superpower, you jealous aussiecuck. By the way, how many high speed lines does your shithole country have? Fucking idiot.
Yes, America is clearly the world's greatest power today. In 1897 Britain held this position: take a look at a poem by Rudyard Kipling (who also lived in the US), inviting powers to ask themselves some questions. It's called Recessional: www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46780/recessional
I hate travel vlogs, since they always make me sick with envy. However, I always enjoys yours because you're so down to earth and keep it very informative. It's a pleasure to watch!
Great Video Paul! 2:12 - mostly, on this sleeper car, the standart sleepers are below and the deluxe sleeper above. Sorry for my english, i hope you understand what i mean. :D Greatings from Austria!
Have been in both the Zurich train station (about a year and a half before you were) and the Berlin station (about 6 months after you were) so I can relate to the beginning of the video and, to some degree, the stop at Berlin. VERY GOOD video! Gave me a good "feel" about traveling in a sleeper car on a European train.
Thanks for your very nice video.Very recently I traveled by this train. It is very comfortable journey, though costly. Thanks once again for your comperihansive video.
It looks extremely awesome!! I would never have thought that you could obtain that luxury service on a train! I'll try to do one night route on that train!!
Great video Paul! I enjoy all of your videos, especially the ones from countryside UK. Loved the spacious sleeper on this one. Thanks for taking us to Hamburg with you! Keep 'em coming! Cheers.
This really is a comfort to me as I've been reading for ages that European railway companies have been doing away with overnight trains and sleeper services out of some ridiculous belief that they're unprofitable and unpopular in the age of high-speed rail and cheap airlines. It's grand to see the OBB still have some sense and keep them going, though I'd expect no less from the Austrians. Glad to see that the European Night Train hasn't yet gone the way of the old Train De Luxe did back in the 70's with the end of the original Orient Express. If I may, I do have a couple of questions, if you don't mind answering comments on such an old video: 1. Are there any restrictions on using the en-suite shower? I've read on other sleeper trains, such as those in Japan, that they give you a limited time of hot water use, something like 6-10 minutes, depending on the train. Also, if you are not traveling in a deluxe compartment like this, are there communal showers available to the rest of the carriage? 2. Aside from the delivered breakfast, is there any other meal service available on board, such as a buffet, or perhaps a full restaurant car, or even light meals from the attendant? Or should one plan on bringing one's own dinner/late night snack when traveling on a train like this?
Note those earplugs in the goodie bag. They're a good idea for nights on trains-along with a blindfold for your eyes. I adapted without them when I roamed Europe via Eurail for three months, but it always took me a couple of days to adjust when I started off again.
it is a shame that Deutsche Bahn doesn´t operate any night trains any more. Now the Austrians (ÖBB) can run the business. DB don´t have a clue of traditional travelling. They think everyone wants to zip through the countries only in glitzy fast speed trains. I prefer- especially on longer journeys- the traditional night trains.
Well who is able to spend the money for the night train and has enough time to travel in the fashion of the 19th century anymore? Businesspeople - Nope, they take the plane ZRH-HAM 1h20min / ~50€ oneway Familys - Nope, too expensive, they either drive their car or fly Students and young people - Nope, too expensive, they take a cheap bus So who is left?
+jamie514 Sadly Tom is right. The market for sleeper trains is fast diminishing (I allude to this in the video description) and many only survive because of massive public subsidy. There are still some enthusiasts like me who love sleeper trains - but they are a novelty these days. I wish more people did like "slow travel" but things have moved on.
+jamie514 But basic economy is the competitor for the sleeper train. Most people don't want to take a sleeper train. Most would prefer a cheap night in a hotel and the air fare because that's now the "default" way of travelling. Whether we like it or not the sleeper train is a novelty which doesn't have mass market appeal in Europe any more. That's why there are so few of them compared to the past.
The triple panel departure timetable at 1:12 exemplifies an overlooked fact: Zurich's Main Railway Station is served by just under *3'000* *trains* a day. It is thus the *world's* *busiest* for *train* *traffic* - though only *51st* in terms of the number of commuters.
I thank you for letting me ride along with you I enjoyed the trip, this is how I travel now days, I used to hop trains in my younger days hiding in a hot box to make the trip but thanks to you I was able to ride this time in a nice deluxe sleeper car you did a nice job I enjoyed it see you later might bring a friend back with me next time if you wouldn't mind one more person going with us ?
I did enjoy watching that as a railfan. Seems rather spartan but smooth ride and the quietness. Those two big rolls seemed like a lot. The couchettes look like the siberian third class.
Interesting and nicely made video. Definitely want to do a Nightjet trip this year. Not sure if it will be this route, but this was a great insight into what it's like on board. Thanks!
Thanks, enjoyable ride, I've also done the doubledeck deluxe compartment sometime. Just one thing, both single and double deck sleeping-cars have deluxe and economy compartments. In the single deck car you have 3-berth compartments (up to 3 passengers above each other) and both deluxe and economy compartments are similar, the only difference being the private bathroom. In the double deck car you generally have 2-berth compartments (2 passengers above each other) as seen, a deluxe compartment is as big as two economy compartments which allows to have a table with chairs. Here the economy compartment is very small. (There are two 4-berth compartments too) The couchette compartment shown is in a 4 passenger configuration, with different positioning of the middle bed six can go in a compartment.
In 2009 I went with the orient exspress from kings cross to a town called Roseville in Scotland...its such a beautiful train. Shame it's out of order. P.S. Love the video! Keep it up! :D
Nice vid; thanks fot sharing. Indeed the OBB is doing very well on this service. There is about to be a reopened nightline from Zurich to Amsterdam v.v. The DB abolished such years ago..... as said below, they don"t have any clue obout comfortable sleepingcar travelling..... such a shame!
The sculpture at 0:54 in Zürich Hauptbahnhof was made by a french artist called Nikki de Saint-Phalle (not Nicki minaj 😜!). She made anothoer same in Malbrouck castle in Moselle where I live. And I like your videos they are very interresting ! Cheers !
Got to get on this train one day....let's hope she's still in service when I finally have my chance. Missed Cassiopeia. Missed Hokutosei. Almost destined to miss Sunrise. Never will I miss this. And Thello Night as well.
Wow such beautiful stations! My country (USA) has neglected rail for such a long time, but the government is now supporting rail growth! Maybe if you come back in 10 years we might has 3 high speed rail! (2 current 1s both owned by Amtrak, the North East Corridor, and the Illinois High Speed Rail corridor!)
Thanks for the video! These "Standard Sleeper" coaches contain Deluxe compartments with your own bathroom as well, they are not only in double deck coaches.

Good one, left a like! :-)
Im sorry i have to correct you, but thats not the ÖBB. Those are from Austria and you traveled with sbb cff ffs. That's the counterpart from switzerland.😅 Besides that it was a great video 😀
And now i have to correct me... i didn't See the bag at the beginning... sorry 😐
Paul is a nice guy. No pretense like so many other trip vloggers, just good production, and the facts. Thanks, Paul.
Exactly Right..
this. So refreshing for RUclips nowadays
Yes, how it was in the beginning. Klassiker!
Agree! Minimal chat.
radbcc you can get facts on Wikipedia also everybody is here for the drama that's why this channel sucks

Perhaps its the proximity to both Germany and Italy. Practicality and flair all in one.
Wow, I'm blown away at how quiet the trip was. That is amazing.
What a relaxed chilled and civilised way to travel, it looks an amazing product. I've just returned from Germany and remember seeing these trains in both Hamburg and Berlin Hauptbahnhof. Great video as always Paul.
But they are way to expensive ...
it's cheaper than a night in a hotel. At least considering that you don't have to travel by plane.
AMC3 I’m from Sweden and we have very similar trains and infrastructure.
I made a trip Hamburg-Basel in a standard sleeper. The deluxe sleeper has way much space, my biggest problem was where to put my things. 3am, i can't sleep.
youtube: hey, do you want to know all about sleeper trains?
me: alright let's do this!
This looks like a great way to travel. Cozy, shower to yourself, decent breakfast, quiet. Thanks Paul.
I really enjoy your trip reports, especially train trips in continental Europe. Your videography makes me eager with anticipation to get back traveling post-COVID. Thank you!
The guardian angel by the French-Swiss painter and sculptor Niki de St. Phalle in the large hall in Zurich's main station.
That's a Guardian Angel? She look like a mama from my hood! LOL!
@@billgracey6369 You are not really familiar with Niki's style? :-)
😂😂
@@billgracey6369, looks like Spiderman's hooker.
That's not a guardian angel. Angel figures are not dressed so suggestively.
Paul your trip reports are absolutely amazing especially this one. More rail trip reports like this please
Such a civilised way to travel. Loving your videos, especially the train ones which is a subject less covered in other blogs.
Sehr schön, das jemand meine alte Arbeit Strecke dokumentiert und hier rein gestellt hat.
Ist echt sehr schön !
I already have my Nightjet Deluxe Single from Berlin to Zurich in October. Video is a nice preview of Coming Attractions. Thanks Paul!
I have only recently discovered Paul's videos and really enjoy them. I prefer the more recent ones because they have more of Paul. He has such a lovely voice and style.
That's the size of some NYC apartments... And still pretty generous
This is the first "deluxe sleeper" that deserves this name. Quite spacious apartment!
Yeah. They were introduced back in 1997 where they became a daily sight on the Denmark-Germany servuces. I travelled on these sleepers before. Very comfortable, but ironically the lower-deck compartments are some of the most cramped and uncomfortable compartments you can find on a european night train. xD
Love Hamburg. The Minature Wunderland is great
so glad to live in hamburg ;D
Miniatur Wunderland is just the alibi for those who go to Reeperbahn.
So are the hamburgers...........................
Miniature Wunderland is acutally the most visited tourist site in Germany
I thought the harbor was also cool.
This looks to be the best sleeper train I’ve seen. Actually looks like a decent bed.
Felt like I was on the train, loved it !!!!!!!
+rob cross Thanks Rob!!

Awesome job! We are catching the nightjet from Vienna to Milan and your video was very helpful. We are booking the compartment for 2 people and your video has made us even more excited!
I was lucky enough to be stationed in Germany. I took several trains. Love them. I want his job!
Great video Paul - I love travelling and hearing from others sharing the same passion.
Wow Paul that was amazing! I wish trains here in the United States were that nice. Have a great day! 🚅 love the thumbnail BTW!
Amtrak still has a couple sleeper routes I believe but then of course Trump and his administration wants to get rid of any exotic tourism aspects of our government. Its unbelievable that the Americans cant get 280 KPH trains like this guy can.
That's not fair - you can't generalise. But I do wonder about supporters of the current President............
That was not a nice train. Outdated.

That makes sense- thanks!
Paul's Trip Reports m
The standard sleepers below are the size of a shoebox.
Your English is grand! Much better than my French, which I studied for 6 years and my German which I have only a few words of!
Wow...that must have been a more than comfortable ride. Great scenery outside and clean stations. Wish I could travel like this one day.
thanks for this... i love sleeper trains with ensuite shower/toilet... i collect as many data on them for future travel purposes 👍

I took the sleeper train from Zurich to Vienna....a 10-hr ride which was quite a breeze. My family had a good night's sleep.
Another well done video. I dream of being able to travel by train through Europe. Seems so much more relaxing than by air.
Thanks Paul. Very interesting videos. I am in New Zealand, so great to see European modes of transport|! Thank You!

If I may, I do have a couple of questions, if you don't mind answering comments on such an old video:
Or should one plan on bringing one's own dinner/late night snack when traveling on a train like this?

great video again. train across Europe is on the bucket list
very cool, we had the nightjet from Hamburg to Vienna...

The DB sleepers with the 3 bunk bedrooms remind me of the pre WWII era American 12 and 13 double bedroom sleeping cars.

Oh wow! That all looked pretty decent Paul.
Now that’s what I call comfy first class 👌🏻😉
First class work! You set the bar high!
In 2009 I went with the orient exspress from kings cross to a town called Roseville in Scotland...its such a beautiful train. Shame it's out of order.
P.S. Love the video! Keep it up! :D
I live near Zurich and always wanted to visit Hamburg: You hooked me!
Nice report! I have a good friend who lives in Hamburg....
Thnx Paul. It was a nice trip
Did that same run in 1996 and ate in the mall beneath the Zurich station, because there was a blizzard outside.
REALY NICE TRAIN TO SO GRAND LUXURY FOR SURE
+1 .. What a great find, your video post. .. Fantastic! .. M/S .. Vail, Colorado
seeing the menu is the second most important thing.
wow amazing video with good informations! Great job,you have earned a sub

Took the OBB night train from Hannover to Vienna. It was a great experience. Even the zitwagen was good enough.
The cabin looks cosy!
Got to get on this train one day....let's hope she's still in service when I finally have my chance.
Missed Cassiopeia. Missed Hokutosei. Almost destined to miss Sunrise. Never will I miss this. And Thello Night as well.
Love your trips Paul, I see you did not drink the free wine
That is indeed a good size sleeper.
