@Laserdisc9X Eh, most programs seem bloaty, because they have an oversized reserved RAM buffer that Windows manages. Launch a game and you'll quickly see other programs' RAM footprints shrinking down as Windows reprioritizes resources.
Steam actually improved their power user experience to a level that nothing else is really at right now. It's great, and really makes it feel like they care for the consumer. Also, I saw Gato Roboto in that library. Fine taste dude.
They are pretty greedy with developers, they ask for 30% royalties to put your game on the platform where for example the Epic Games Store asks for 12%
@@drinkwatrr9883 30% is literally the industry standard - other than epic and microsoft I'm pretty sure all other digital storefronts take a similar cut. Steam also actually provides useful features for that 30% cut (workshop, remote play, etc); Epic doesn't, and the only reason they can sustain the 12% cut is because of Fortnite, while Microsoft is able to sustain it because, well, they're a tech behemoth.
@@chaotic6107 I didn't know that and it's a fair point but I still think that taking 30% revenue is still a lot no matter what platform it is, especially when you consider how many other things developers have to pay for including engine and software licenses, marketing, etc. I just think 30% is a greedy standard
Gog is the number 1 store when it comes to being consumer friendly. Being able to play games I paid for without intrusive and performance reducing DRM is so nice
Thats more on the publishers. Thats why so many games are not on GOG. Publishers dont like the idea of DRM-free. You can release a Steam game drm-free.
@@LegionIscariot yes but games that are both on steam and GOG are likely to have DRM on steam but not on GOG. You own a game on GOG, Steam can actually remove a game from your library given their ToS
I think GOG's main flaw is that it doesn't have DRM, the reason why I call it bad is because you can buy a game and then copy it around. That's why piracy is bigger on games that are on GOG.
funnily enough, when people mention the 30% cut Steam gets from being a Dev as a counterpoint especially when comparing it to like Epic's 12% cut, that argument does not cut it when you realize that the 30% comes with stuff that eases and helps a dev create a community for their product and even help in the process of creating content for said product as the dev; that and 30% percent being industry standard but hey. 12% to get your product in the store... and... _checks notes_ Ah yes, have the ability to monitor reviews for the product. Meanwhile, sure they get 30% but I get access to frameworks and a dedicated modding hub? Oo Discussion Boards, Groups, and Guide Boards too? I can grow a community for my product in just one app rather than have it scattered? I don't have to rely on third party sites and softwares to be able to expand community reach? Oh my god they even have a premade support page for general common problems. Also people forget that Steam doesn't only host games; They can host music, videos, art, and best of all, other Software that are not entirely games. Blender, Vegas Pro, hell the one app a ton of people use, Wallpaper Engine, is on Steam as well.
Also, Epic has literally stated that 12% is not sustainable. You bet your ass that Epic wouldn't be charging only 12% on EGS if they were the dominant PC platform.
Not to mention that steam only charges 30% once your game has hit specific sales numbers, below which theyll charge substantially less while still giving you access to everything steam has to offer. (And while not being much, they dont even charge you anything until you made more money back than the fees for putting your game up have cost you in the first place, but thats only a few hundred anyway.)
And that's not even mentioning the fact that publishing your game on steam substantially increases its chances of being found by people and potentially succeeding. The sheer number of people who use steam is an advantage in of itself for game developers.
Add one more thing to that list of why Steam is awesome! You can import your non-Steam games and set it up controller support, which is super handy! Edit-grammar

I mainly buy games on some websites because its just sometimes cheaper but its still very good, from buying prime in CS:GO you can buy other games like Stronghold or PvZ if you get good item drop
Steam is supreme because they support the communities. This is evident by their interest in Linux, they open source their tools and clients and yes, Steam deck running a modified version of Arch Linux is enough evidence that they love working with the people that support them.
"That one time valve tried to introduce paid mods which backfired" This is actually also a very good thing, because most companies would just see the profit option and say something like "Players don't know what is the best for them" and would try to force the idea onto the market. Valve did not. They understood that this idea was horrible, so they decided to back up from the idea. And, you know, you can't blame someone for attempting to do something new as long as they don't do the wrong thing twice. At least that's what I think :l
ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was the first programmable, electronic, general-purpose digital computer made in 1945. It was Turing-complete and able to solve "a large class of numerical problems" through reprogramming. Although ENIAC was designed and primarily used to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory (which later became a part of the Army Research Laboratory), its first program was a study of the feasibility of the thermonuclear weapon. ENIAC was completed in 1945 and first put to work for practical purposes on December 10, 1945. ENIAC was formally dedicated at the University of Pennsylvania on February 15, 1946, having cost $487,000 (equivalent to $5,900,000 in 2020), and was heralded as a "Giant Brain" by the press. It had a speed on the order of one thousand times faster than that of electro-mechanical machines; this computational power, coupled with general-purpose programmability, excited scientists and industrialists alike. The combination of speed and programmability allowed for thousands more calculations for problems. As ENIAC calculated a trajectory in 30 seconds that took a human 20 hours, one ENIAC could replace 2400 humans. ENIAC was formally accepted by the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps in July 1946. It was transferred to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland in 1947, where it was in continuous operation until 1955.

GOG is also a good storefront, although it can't compete with Steam, it's a very good complement for getting the best versions of some old games which have dogshit Steam builds (e.g. Crysis 1 Steam build still having SecuROM or Fallout 3 Steam build still having GFWL 🤮), it also has some exclusives like Diablo or the old Mortal Kombat games, and the biggest sell point of GOG is that MOST (some games still have DRM remnants like FEAR) of the titles are DRM-free, so you get true ownership of the digital license you bought. The launcher isn't a big deal but it looks nice, works most of the time and it has some features that Steam doesn't have like linking other launcher accounts or being to rollback to previous game versions.
I can reccomend few games, Devil May Cry (i reccomend starting from HD Collection, first 3 games with better resolution) Plants vs Zombies (GOTY) Counter Strike: Global Offensive (reccomended with prime but you can play it without it) and Team Fortress 2

Didn't even mention Proton and their remarkably successful push to make Linux into a legitimate gaming platform. Not a moment too soon, either. Never been happier since ditching Windows.
As a Linux user, Steam is the greatest piece of software for gaming ever released on Linux. Because of Proton and the way it promotes Linux I can play games that normally I would never have access to. On top of that because of Steam sales, I was able to get the entire Doom franchise for $20 and the Wolfenstein collection for $15. With the release of the Steam Deck soon I will not only be able to play games on any device but also anytime and anywhere. I will receive my Steam Deck in Q3 and I wait every day for it. When my keyboard recently broke I ordered a Steam controller and although not arrived yet I look forward to playing games with it. Portal 2 is one of the greatest games of all time and Half-Life 2 is a masterpiece. I'm still playing through episode 1 and soon ill start episode 2. The PC gaming market is looking bright and hopefully SteamOS takes off on the desktop.
Ive been on steam for 15 years now, and have never been hacked. I've been on uplay and rockstar for only a 1/4 of that time, and already been hacked twice on uplay and three times on rockstar. Steam Deck is more portable than the Switch. Both of them aren't fitting in a pocket but while Nintendo expects you to throw a switch in a bag and potentially scratch the screen, Valve includes a carrying case with a pouch for accessories like a charger.
There have been countless mini pcs over the years ^^ starting even as way back as DOS. Though tbh before the steam deck most werent really good for gaming ^^
The thing I hate about epic, is that it takes like 5 minutes to load, while steam takes about 15-30 seconds. Epic also has barely any features other than games, no community interaction, so forum to discuss issues, etc.
Great video! One thing that was not mentioned in detail is the Steam store. It is very clear, adapts to your taste and shows you popular games, but also sometimes small games that are mega good. Also it shows user reviews, small videos when you mouse over the game are played, updates from developer that you can follow and much more. In addition, the library is also so very customizable. Custom groups, even dynamic groups, developer updates at the top and so much more. Steam does so many things right and does one thing especially right. You feel comfortable using Steam, not like Epic where you want to close the shit as soon as you pick up your free weekly game.
I do agree a lot with this video. The amount of stuff, features and details it has really do make it a heck of a charm. Especially just how easy it is and how vast it gets! I do use this to find some interesting games to check out, especially in the coming soon section. And boy do you find some charming things on this site!
with sony putting a lot of their exclusives on steam and pretty much all of the good xbox games being available on game pass you don't really need any consoles outside of nintendo ones tbh
Steam is the best probably because it's one company who refuses to fall into corruption, they started by making games for fun, and made games with true love instead of just making trashy cash grabs. They also listen to the community and have great working conditions. So it's really well deserved to be number 1.
I see some people say Epic is comparable but it's just lacking so much that makes steam rise above the rest Oh, and I think it invades people's privacy, I remember seeing someone post about it updating their bank details without consent Silly little platform
Can we also take a moment to appreciate that Steam gives you the option to install skins for their interface? Like, not even just some slight recoloring, but one could make quite big changes to the interface using skins.
While steam is amazing for all its features, it will never match how based GOG is for having no DRM. Also gog is very easy to use and comfortable too. And they have their own unique features on gog galaxy like syncing all your libraries. Plus they give discounts to games sseth asks them to on command lol. I honestly don't get what you have against them.
Im sorry but GOG is actually really good. Not on the level of steam but being able to play old ass games without having to patch them is a godsend. Not to mention they have some stuff that isnt even on steam. Like Diablo or first 2 Warcraft games. Granted, if you can't deal with older games you probably dont care about those but to me, as a person who just got interested in playing old games that aren't available anywhere else, GOG is very good.
Epic Games HAD the biggest potential to be a competitor to steam with the ridiculous amount of fortnite money they have but they just became lazy. Seriously so many basic features are missing from it that I feel like they could make it close to steam if they wanted to in a couple months (this applies only to epic tho since they like throwing money at games and they have near infinite supply it seems).
I fully agree with everything you mentioned in this video and frankly I'm part of the Steam hype train and I was gonna go on and say all about the flaws of scamming yet you also cover that which is cool, but I guess I'm just too baby to hold a steam account because the complexity is its downfall to me atleast, I simply woke up one day barely knowing what year we were in, got a scammy link on discord and i just lost my steam account. Even if I recover it what's the point? I can't know wether those guys removed all my games or not
Just get your account back with the help of steam support . The scammers can't do anything on your account, can't delete games, can't trade items (7 days hold). Thay can use your steam balance if you have any but you can always get a refund. So there is not point in leaving the account
they can't remove any games and from what i've experienced (as someone who has lost their steam account to a scammer before) steam support is really helpful when it comes to this type of thing the closest thing they can come to deleting your games is that free games can be removed from your account and steam inventory items can be traded away but other than that everything should be intact
I remember when some random person changed the email of my account and basically stole it. I messaged Steam about it,and it took them less than 12 hours to give me access to my account back. Never saw a quicker response from administration tbh.
Ye honestly valve support is quite awesome. I once had a game with an external launcher which basically downloaded the game through the launcher adding to game time, the game was hilariously broken but my refund requests failed because "over 2 hours of playtime", submitted support ticket putlining the situation and not even a day later i got a reply "we cant give you a refund but we can remove the game from your library and give you your money back" Idk what exactly sets this apart from a refund but it was quite neat ^^

@@thespyfromteamfortress2149 Yeah you are right!
I remember those times when you could win free games on steam on certain events back in the day. Also Steam would also pretty much count as a social media platform with all the community tabs and group chats it has.
Also I know sometimes publishers makes games free for a limited time (that if you add it to your account you get to keep the game forever, but im not talking about that.
Yea but it would be hard to do that becaus of bot accounts and stuff
They did that with ark so I picked it up while I could
Filled my account with 50 freebies while only buy 3 games
i did that with ark and mafia and battlestar galactica deadlock (haven't played ark of battlestar galactica yet though)
If Epic games started giving both more money to devs and outright free games and people still prefer steam, it's really more than enough proof
Yeah but I never spend money on PC games so Epic all the way for me
@@gomango99 So you don't even at all support the Devs?
@@mr.holodoc7406 I do, i just spend enough money on other platforms that its really nice to just have a launcher that gives free games. Also by downloading the game when its free, it will be on featured when the sale is over because of how many people downloaded it

EGS has 2 users: fortnite players and people that hoard free games that they might not even play.

Tbf the guides that are useful are super useful
steam guides are 50% troll guides, 30% bait guides and 20% I can teach you how to do a no-hit elden ring run by just reading a few paragraphs
I really use disscussions tab for needing help with x and y thing, guides thing p much sums up why I don't use it lmao
Huh i wasn't that much into guides unless it was SFM :p

Ima pretend like I didn't see that
yes, you become a valve fanboy because they have some amazing games
GOG= Retro games Steam=Anything else
Also fun fact: Steam was HATED when it originally started because you had to have it to play counter strike or half life
Now basically everybody has it. Whenever I get a new laptop the first thing I do is install Chrome, and then immediately use Chrome to install Steam.
yep i fucking hated steam in 2004. it took until 2008 for me to install it, i just flat out refused to comply with their retarded mandatory DRM.
honestly, still not a fan, but i've learned to live with it. besides, back then there were literally no benefits to steam like there are now. it was just a stupid resource hog DRM. kinda like denuvo
@@BonW now that's how you setup a computer
@Laserdisc9X Eh, most programs seem bloaty, because they have an oversized reserved RAM buffer that Windows manages. Launch a game and you'll quickly see other programs' RAM footprints shrinking down as Windows reprioritizes resources.
Yeah. Also, all the fallout games are on GOG save for fallout 4
Steam actually improved their power user experience to a level that nothing else is really at right now. It's great, and really makes it feel like they care for the consumer.
Also, I saw Gato Roboto in that library. Fine taste dude.
If there's one thing that i respect about valve, it's how big steam has gotten without being greedy
The only bad thing is quality control being relaxed other than that it's perfect
Steam is greedy, they just do it in very hidden and subtle ways
I just think 30% is a greedy standard
one of my favourite things steam has done is proton. it made gaming on linux just as easy - if not better - than on windows.

Me suffering my ass off on a MacBook
@@yes-lfs everything is pirated. drms make the experience worse for legal buyers
@@yes-lfs Nowadays piracy is a thing on even the most biggest drms tbh
funnily enough, when people mention the 30% cut Steam gets from being a Dev as a counterpoint especially when comparing it to like Epic's 12% cut, that argument does not cut it when you realize that the 30% comes with stuff that eases and helps a dev create a community for their product and even help in the process of creating content for said product as the dev; that and 30% percent being industry standard but hey.
I never thought about that actually, you have a very good point.
Sometimes a higher price to something can mean a better service.
The sheer number of people who use steam is an advantage in of itself for game developers.
they even hosted Game Maker:Studio itself

Steam is supreme because they support the communities.
This is evident by their interest in Linux, they open source their tools and clients and yes, Steam deck running a modified version of Arch Linux is enough evidence that they love working with the people that support them.
"That one time valve tried to introduce paid mods which backfired"
This is actually also a very good thing, because most companies would just see the profit option and say something like "Players don't know what is the best for them" and would try to force the idea onto the market. Valve did not. They understood that this idea was horrible, so they decided to back up from the idea.
And, you know, you can't blame someone for attempting to do something new as long as they don't do the wrong thing twice.

I'm still playing through episode 1 and soon ill start episode 2. 0:45 in my opinion there's room for debate, depending on the person you might go on trips or something commonly like that it might be better the nintendo switch to play or something like that (i say this as someone who does not go on trips often therefore i'm only saying it in a hypothetical case)
fun fact: while writing this comment i forgot the steam deck was a thing
Steam Deck is more portable than the Switch. Both of them aren't fitting in a pocket but while Nintendo expects you to throw a switch in a bag and potentially scratch the screen, Valve includes a carrying case with a pouch for accessories like a charger.
There have been countless mini pcs over the years ^^ starting even as way back as DOS. Though tbh before the steam deck most werent really good for gaming ^^
A big reason why I like steam is the amount of work that Valve has done to bring PC games to Linux. For that I'll be forever grateful.
Yakuza appeared for a second, I'm satisfied

Steam is the best probably because it's one company who refuses to fall into corruption, they started by making games for fun, and made games with true love instead of just making trashy cash grabs. They also listen to the community and have great working conditions. So it's really well deserved to be number 1.

Steam is just that one buddy that always has whatever you need and is up for anything
I can't know wether those guys removed all my games or not
Are you gonna get surgery for that extra chromosome?
I don't think they can remove your games, only tradable items like skins in CS:GO
Just get your account back with the help of steam support . The scammers can't do anything on your account, can't delete games, can't trade items (7 days hold). Thay can use your steam balance if you have any but you can always get a refund. So there is not point in leaving the account
they can't remove any games and from what i've experienced (as someone who has lost their steam account to a scammer before) steam support is really helpful when it comes to this type of thing
the closest thing they can come to deleting your games is that free games can be removed from your account and steam inventory items can be traded away but other than that everything should be intact
only problem with steam is download time and i need a bigger hard drive to play all of the games i get from steam sale
Honestly steam could have literally none of the stuff you mentioned outside of mod workshop/launchers and it'd probably still be the best.
I remember when some random person changed the email of my account and basically stole it. I messaged Steam about it,and it took them less than 12 hours to give me access to my account back. Never saw a quicker response from administration tbh.
Ye honestly valve support is quite awesome.
I once had a game with an external launcher which basically downloaded the game through the launcher adding to game time, the game was hilariously broken but my refund requests failed because "over 2 hours of playtime", submitted support ticket putlining the situation and not even a day later i got a reply "we cant give you a refund but we can remove the game from your library and give you your money back"
Idk what exactly sets this apart from a refund but it was quite neat ^^
that outro was so cool
