This is a superb lecture from a famous and renowned astronomer. It's hugely interesting and enlightening. Wonderful, jargon- free explanations and beautiful illustrations. It really wets ones appetite for more information, research and understanding. It's really great stuff. Thank you for doing this.

it may wet some people's appetites, but for those who crave intellectual stimulation, I think it would WHET their appetites, which would be a better thing! ;-)

Martin Rees. Wow, he seems to be getting on in age; last I saw him was on one of those general public astronomy series, like on PBS or Nat'l Geo, or maybe Discovery, etc., that must've been, now, 10-15 years back. That and he was probably made up to look swell for the TV cameras. But he's still sharp as a tack. Very up-to-date on the latest astronomical happenings, advances, etc. Great show, as they say in England.

The Goldilocks Zone.. ! (Not too hot and not too cold) Approx 18.00 minutes.. like it! He's a sense of humour.

+Georgina Brett It's a common use of the phrase in astronomical circles when referring to the zone around a star that could possibly be suitable for an earth-ish like planet.
      Simple but descriptive.

Oh, yes, Marty's got a good sense of humor: I like the bit about those who write him letters claiming to already have "proof" of "alien" life...(abducted, seen ufos, crop circles, etc.) he offered a reasonable comeback to their nutty claims & then said that they should also write each other, instead of him! (lmao!) Also, near the end, when he was describing the evolution of life on the planet over the last 3.5 billion years or so (that's about as far back in this 4.567 billion year-old planet we've seen evidence of life, so far, that is): he prefaced that remark by saying "...unless you come from Kentucky or from a muslim country (or something to that effect: muslim country, are a muslim or something, meaning too blinded by nonsensical religious dogma to be able to understand the actual way the world works); now that made me laugh out loud!

What if "dark matter" is the cause of the redshifting of light?
It would fit with the fact that the longer away the light comes from, the more "dark matter" it has passed through, and the more redshifted it is. That would mean the universe is not expanding with accelerating speed... I always found that hard to believe

Christian Flink .......I'm not a scientist, but my crude description of the red shift, requires considering sound waves, whereby as a siren 🚨 approaches you it's sound wave gets compressed, and as it leaves you it's sound wave is stretched, so to speak,. Thus rendering different sounds interpreted by your ears. The so-called red shift is a light wave acting the same as a sound wave, excepting that eyes (or telescopes) interpret instead of ears.
