    Thank you, Jim, for an accurate timeline! I've met too many people who don't know they weren't originally a 3 man team with Roberts. Hayes and Gordy were a regular 2 man team at first.

  • @richiehunt5097
    @richiehunt5097 3 года назад +24

    They had incredible chemistry and everybody knew their role and was perfectly fine playing it. What many younger fans don't realize is that Michael Hayes is a top-5 ever on the mic. And in many senses, I would prefer him working on the mic than somebody like The Rock because he could put over the opponent and talk on the mic as a heel or face and you completely bought into it. Terry Gordy was more or less 'the enforcer' who was one of the greatest big men ever. And Buddy Roberts was there to provide the viciousness in beatdowns, bu t look the fool and do the job when they lost.
    They were the perfect foil for The Von Erichs, consisting at that time of David, Kerry and Kevin. This led to creating the 6 man tag team belt which really meant something. And because it was a 6 man tag match, it was much easier to create great, exciting matches than if you were doing just singles matches. And that's perhaps one of the greatest legacy of the Von Erichs and Freebirds...nowhere else could you get a feud that revolved around 6 man tag matches.
    Quite a few groups have tried to replicate The Freebirds, but none of them have been successful in doing so.

    Terry Gordy was at his best in 1981 when he split from Michael Hayes and started teaming with Jimmy Snuka. There is a classic promo where Snuka smashes three cinder blocks over the chest of Ken Patera using a sledgehammer. Terry Gordy proceeds to tell everyone watching at home to "go get a twelve pound sledgehammer and try it on yourselves, maybe put it on your heads and knock a little sense into you, and recognize some class when you see it". Gordon Solie deadpans his response by saying "no, no, Terry Gordy's comments are not well taken, and you sir are excused". It is my all time favorite promo and can be found on RUclips by searching (GCW August 1-2 1981). Edit: also search RUclips (Bob Roop explains his version of the sleeper hold to Gordon Solie. WCW February 1983) Gordon tells everyone at home to not try the sleeper hold yourselves. Bob Roop interrupts and says "unless it's on someone you don't like, like your sister or somebody". Gordon looks horrified. Classic.

      My story is the similar. Got in to Wrestling in the Fall/winter of that same year (83') when my folks moved into a bigger place & we were finally able to afford cable . Wildfire Rich/the masked "Mr. R", Dibiase, Jake "the snake", King Kong Bundy, Road Warriors, Buzz Sawyer, Bret Wayne Sawyer, Sweet sugar brown/Skip Young, Pistol Pez Watley, Brad Armstrong, the Spoiler, & Ronnie Garvin to name a few! Great memories indeed! Up until then i would have to rely on magazines & that one friend that everyone had because he seemed to have EVERYTHING (including cable of course) in order to get my Wrestling fix lol. I always HATED gone fishing with Orlando Wilson show that preceded GCW myself as well as Braves baseball too..(or Hawks basketball) ...Thx for sharing.

    The Fabulous Freebirds of Hayes, Gordy and Roberts were the best 3 man heel team of that time period. The 1990's version of the Freebirds was just the worst. Reason being was because of Jimmy Garvin being on supplements trying to be a badass which failed and also Michael Hayes had this idea in his head that the Freebirds were gonna be how they were in the 80's but by that time, Buddy Roberts was retired and Terry Gordy was doing dates in between with All Japan.

    Jim Cornette breaking down the details of The Freebirds….

  • @MisterBeauJanGels
    @MisterBeauJanGels 3 года назад

    Fact check time:
    When the Culkins split off and started their own territory, Leroy McGuirk was still in charge. Bill Watts was his booker. The Culkin territory went kaput around January 1979. Mid-South didn't start until more than six months later. The strong relationship Watts had with the executives of WGNO (their New Orleans affiliate) and certain political players in Louisiana allowed him to break away from McGuirk. However, the Culkins filed an antitrust lawsuit against McGuirk, which led him to decide their dealings were through. McGuirk told Watts "If you're gonna take Louisiana, you're also gonna take Mississippi and deal with that lawsuit yourself".
    When the Freebirds were in Mid-South, the booker was Buck Robley, not Watts. Watts may have booked for a brief while during their tenure after firing Ernie Ladd, however.
    I couldn't find the clip right away and it's been a while since I've seen it. Did the "decency vs. filth" line really come from Kevin or was it actually David who said that?
    Also, seeing as how Corny was around when the Freebirds began in 1979, he should have mentioned that they were billed themselves from California in those early days.

    Yes they were the first....but I a sorry, when you hear the single bas drum of Black Sabbath's Bill Ward....and then here the power chord Iommi riff..and Ozzy through electric microphone..."I AM IRON MAN..." and then the LEGION OF DOOM, The Animal, The Hawk...The ROAD WARRIORS....then metal and the perfect tag team made for that metal era....the best entered the bulding....THE ROAD WARRIORS and sure there was the Precious on but we all know that Hawk and Animal took tag team ...hell wrestling to another level. The Freebirds began rock n wrestling and they will always be known for that but The Road Warriors, like metal - WILL NEVER DIE.
