      @nugglife3035 Hockey is a team sport if we JUST look at cups then pat maroon clears makar and mackinnon. No other metric would lead us to this conclusion. Looking at goals, assists, points, and advanced stats tells us connor is better. Connor outscored both makar and mackinnon in less games with a worse team around him. Mcdavid puts up more points with worse linemates. Makar plays on the best d core in the league and even without him avs still have a great d core. Mackinnon plays with better forwards AND better defensemen than connor does and still puts up less points. Connor has received more individual hardware in single seasons than mackinnon has in his career. Simply looking at cups is lazy in a team sport where athletes dont choose their teams and especially in a sport like hockey is just silly.

    The ability to perceive and process vulnerability and capitalize and exploit it. McDavid has a ruthless killer instinct, and in plays like this the craziest thing isn't just his application of it vs the defender in question, but vs the goaltender as well, because he is ruthlessly exploiting the mechanics of the tender in even less time. Crosby is extremely crafty in creative, especially with his passes and he anticipates plays a good 4 seconds before anyone else on the ice. While you can debate it either way, Crosby was also extremely dynamic offensively when he was McDavid's age, but scoring in the league was down over 15% compared to what it is now. Crosby also didnt play on a line with draisaitl but dupuis and kunitz instead 🤣

    Very thoughtful piece. This is my first time watching you and I'm very impressed with your intellect. You could seriously do some great things within sports management /agent, or scout side... I have a couple of old friends that I've heard went into the lower tiers of scouting (New England area) and you know more than them. As an old school guy, we tend to want to say that "the new guys are not as good"... "the old school guys were better", etc... Truth is-- they are all fantastic within the variables of their era-- I.E. current level of equipment, off-season training, and diet, etc... Two things I'll say about watching McDavid... I know he's blazing fast by how short he makes the rink look. But also, we do have to remember that we can actually see guys do great things now. The camera technology is finally good enough and there are so many different cameras now. Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, Espositio, Howe, etc... did some amazing things that you just couldn't see unless you were actually there (sober lol) and paying attention. Also, from a game prep/coaching standpoint you can study film as a player now... In the 60'. 70s ad 80's going into a room on your day off and analyzing plays was just not as available to you. Cheers amigo!

Listening on the radio was literally better. No joke. Just go back and watch the 1980 USA vs Russia Olympic game for reference and then the 1987 Canada cup games... 1980 was bad, and 87 was just a little better. It wasn't until the early 1990s when Gretzky got to LA and Fox tried to put a yellow highlighter on the puck. But still, casual fans could still not even follow a game on TV. The athletes are not better today. People haven't changed. But, training, equipment, drugs, coaching, and game film have all made tremendous leaps. Imagine if Gretzky or Larry Bird actually lifted weights in the off-season, or Mantle wasn't hungover all the time...Makar would have been great in another era and Orr would have been great today. Juice or as the new generation calls them "PEDs" lol... is not something we hear about in the NBA, NHL, or Tennis but trust me, there are a lot more guys and girls on the sauce than anyone is letting on... Jordan finished a full season 6lbs heavier than when the season began and no one said a thing. The fanbase and announcers are completely ignorant to physical culture. To wrap up on modern guys... I hope McDavid, & Makar, etc... continue to crush it. It's better for the overall ecosystem of the NHL. (and the value of my PSA 10's lol)

    McDavid is otherworldly and amazing, but I'm not sure anyone is taking the title of GOAT from Gretz anytime soon. He surpassed everyone else in pretty much every offensive metric by so much it was ridiculous. In 85-86, even if every goal he scored was erased, he would have beaten Lemieux (who played 79 games, so no injury excuse) in scoring that year by 20 points... on assists alone. His 50 goals in 39 games dwarfs everyone before or since. Still, I can't believe that I got to have both of them on my hometown team. Moreover, Lemieux missed 22 games to chemotherapy, came back and still won the scoring title that season ('92-93). I would suggest that there is a element about “processing “ plays in hockey that might be added here if you want to get into the psychology.
    . There is no small amount of ingrained muscle memory that is the result of countless hours of practice on moves and techniques. No one has time to make specific decisions taking in all the complex variables at the highest speeds, but they can react to specific patterns from skills already locked and loaded.
    McDavid is truly a prodigy.
    Anyone who seriously plays a musical instrument will understand this. It’s all about the serious practice. One does not think every note they play. They have systematically trained their hands to do long complex patterns even when they improvise. That is the foundation of the hockey IQ . The best training with the best technique, using both to continually improve across time. That said, not all students are created equal.

    McDavid is one of the only players to get you out of the seat and clap when he scores on YOUR team. I'm too young for the Lemieux and Gretzky era(sad because I'm almost 40 lol). Watching old film and highlights leads me to not appreciate it as much as the level of competition back then just isn't what it is today. It'll be contemporary bias...but McDavid will go down as the greatest barring a catastrophic injury.

    • @dannycarlow8204
      @dannycarlow8204 2 года назад

      No he will not. The rules have changed over the years to make it easier to score and he still doesn't have even a 50 goal season. His best season ever wouldn't break rookie or defenseman single season records. Bossy never played a season in which he scored less than 50 goals. He still needs over 2000 points to catch Gretzky. He would need to score over 200 points per season over the next 10 years to catch him. 200 points has been achieved 4 times in history, all by Gretzky. Gretzky and Lemieux also would have scored more without the 2 line passes that McDavid has never had hampering him. He doesn't even have a ring yet. Gretzky is the all time shorthanded goals leader, I believe Connor has fewer than 5. He will never be the greatest. He is a good player, just very overrated.
