  • Perthes disease, also called Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease, is when the head of the thigh bone dies, collapses, and heals over several years. Treating Perthes during this time is critical to having the best outlook for your child’s hip. Watch this animation to learn more about femoral surgery, which is surgery on the hip-bone, and how we follow the “principle of containment” while treating your child’s Perthes.
Perthes disease affects the head of the thigh bone, which is a ball that fits into a socket in the hip bone. As children grow, the ball and socket put pressure on each other to form a close-fitting, spherical joint. Since Perthes causes the ball to die, keeping the ball contained within the socket is critical to help the joint heal into a more spherical shape. This is called the “principle of containment,” which aims to keep the ball contained within the socket, and keep it in motion. At Children’s Hospital Colorado, we offer several non-surgical treatment options that all follow the principle of containment, as well as surgical options, if absolutely necessary. We will work with you and your child to determine if surgical correction is the right option to treat your child’s Perthes.

    I'm a 27 year old male.
I've had my Perthes Surgery when I was 11.
I've been told that I need a hip replacement about a month ago, because of the pain from weariness of the hip over the years.
I'm scared to death but I'm gonna have to go through with it.
    Wish me luck.

I had a different surgery in this video and was 9. I had always been told that I will have to have a hip replacement around 35-40yrs old. I'm 34 and pain has got a little bit worse over the years but while i'm used to that, I have the same fear of having that surgery. Good luck to you, give an update if you read this comment

I had hip replacement surgery when I was fifty-one due to Perthes. It went fine actually and was a lot easier than going through knee replacement surgery which I also went through. I hope it will help your pain a lot!

I've had my Perthes Surgery when I was 11. To this day I have never been told why this happened to me in the first place.
since 11 till now, I have lived, danced, walked explored the world and it's beautiful nature.
I've been told that I need a hip replacement about a month ago, because of the pain from weariness of the hip over the years.
I'm scared to death but, I'm gonna have to go through with it. What bothers me is that every time I search anything related to a hip replacement surgery, there are only 80 year olds, everywhere. And every website says that these artificial hips last for 13 years. Because they are only made for old people ? I don't know what I am supposed to do. I don't know if I survive this in terms ofmenatl health, but I don't have a choice.
      Wish me luck.

@@sharjeelaftab7072 I had surgery at 9 but it was different than this one. Not sure what it was called but the incision was beside the scrotum. I'm 35 and the pain that i do have, i've gotten used to in life. I don't attribute that to the surgery though, everyone that has had surgery or havent are in worse condition than I am. Weightlifting is the only thing ive done different. Since 16yrs old i have been into bodybuilding(whatever cardio i did was rarely running) and when i go periods of time without working out, pain gets worse. I think that either way, you or whoever is or isnt getting surgery should make fitness a staple in life

I've had an operation similar. I'm 25 now and deal with pain everyday. They told me hip replacement is the only option now. It's unfortunate but they don't have a "fix" so you didn't miss out on anything trust me. Hope everything is well❤

I'm glad they didn't have any surgery like this. I was on crutches for a year without any intervention. From what I've read, I was better off without it!
