    Soundproof windows are becoming more of a necessity with the growth of cities and noisy neighbors. Jeff goes through the different levels of soundproofing, how they work, and how to know what you are getting before buying.

    Thanks for the content. OITC is a much better "soundproof" measure than STC. STC was developed to measure sound movement inside a building (interior walls). OITC (Outdoor/indoor transmission Class) measures the typical noises from airports, cars, roadwork.... The sound waves created inside a house are different then exterior sound waves which is why OITC was developed and STC ratings are discouraged in architectural specs. STC is better known but OITC (published by most window manufacturers) is a much better sound blocking measurement. Thanks again for the content.

    Thank you. Beautiful teaching and presentation. I’ll be going for STC windows where needed, as soon as I purchase my home. I don’t care what they cost! Finally want peace and quiet. City now with single pain has nearly destroyed me. I was suburbs before that, though still plagued bc of big defense dogs next door and across. I was country before that, but health and financial loss caused a long delay getting back to it. And, ironically bc of sleep loss and interference with work this doubled recovery delay. Shame on selfish and rude neighbors.

    I wish you were located around the Orlando area I would of for sure gone with your business. We love your great informational videos and demos. Recently ordered PGT impact windows w/alum frames to replace existing circa 2003 single panes, several very large sliding glass doors and to help with some annoying airport noise. Should be installed next month hopefully they'll do the trick...

    Hi Jeff. Im a window cleaner in Clear Lake. We have a neighborhood where they put in those 4-sash double plus single windows. That's 8 surfaces for us to clean. That's not my complaint.
    Problem is that there are parts of the between surfaces that cant be cleaned. Our customers were told that the inner surfaces would never get dirty.
    I hope the ones you sell dont have this problem. Its a neighborhood of very unhappy customers.

      I don't sell anything that sounds like that. I can't tell you that any triple pain or double pain unit that we sell is completely sealed from the exterior contaminants. If for some reason the last word to fail, that would be under a warranty for at least 20 years and it would be replaced for free.

    What kind of glasses are used in broadcasting studios that achieve nearly 100% sound insulation between the production partition and normal areas?

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  8 месяцев назад +1

      What makes a studio grade window so quiet is a combination of the many things. One of them being the glass, which is similar to the glass I am describing in my video, and the other is the dead airspace between the panes of glass. The greater the dead airspace the quieter the window will be.

    I need those airport windows. I live too close to two hospitals in San Diego and I hear their rescue helicopters. Never heard anything louder. Do you have any contacts out here in San Diego, California, who might carry those triple pane secondary windows? Thank you. You'd be saving me from going insane.

    How do standard triple pane windows compare to these other options?

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  8 месяцев назад +3

      The same principles apply. Sometimes, you cannot fit laminated glass inside of a triple pane unit. And in that case, it will limit how much Sound reduction you can get from a triple pane window.

      Thanks for the reply! I see conflicting information online - are triple pane generally more soundproof than double or similar? All other things being equal.

    • @hunorheim2766
      @hunorheim2766 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@joshua_a_boehm the airsapce between the sheets of glass is important. If you have a triple pane, usually you have less airspace beetween layers. For example: If you have a dual pane (6mm + 6mmm glass) window with 12mm airspace, let's call it "A" window, and you have "B" window with the same glass, but with 200mm airspace, "B" will have almost double the performance, even though it uses the same glass sheets. The closer the glasses to each other, the bigger the sound transmission is.
      The most important thing when it comes to soundproofing is that you need to understand that every glass has a week point. For example a 4mm glass almost let's through the 4 Khz sounds. While a 10mm glass will completey kills the 4 Khz, but has an issue with 1Khz sounds. That's why an offset glass is great, because the different sheets of glasses have different weekpoints. What one can't do, the other can, and vice versa. You need at least a 25mm glass to have absolutely no weak points, but these glasses are not meant for windows.
      The window and glass you need to choose really depends on what sounds you want to block out. Traffic noise is around 200-250 Hz, to block low frequency sounds, you need mass. I.e. the thicker the glass, the better it will block the low frequency sounds.
      I read Peter Lord and Duncan Templeton's book about acoustics when I was planning to order my soundproofing windows. I ended up with a double pane window: 10mm glass + 26 airgap filled with argon gas + a 4.2.4 laminated glass as the 2nd layer (that's two 4mm glass laminated together). With this I got STC 44. As far as I know, you can reach STC 48-50, but for that you need two laminated glass in an offset setup, and that's really expensieve for +4-5 decibel reduction, so not really worth it. At this level, the weekpoint will be not the glass itself, but the rubber seal around the window.
      Previously I had a regular 4mm + 4mm double pane window. With this STC 44 setup the reduction is absolutely massive. Night and day.

    What about triple pane windows? How do those fare?

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  2 месяца назад

      When it comes to sound reduction, having an offset double pane window will do better than an equal triple pane would.
