I was also frustrated with Charlie’s death at first. After watching the series again, and multiple reactions, and not watching with you, I think it makes more sense now. The portal looks big enough for him to swim out of, when in reality it probably wasn’t. He had to make sure Desmond didn’t die with him so he shut the door. Ultimately I think he just accepted he was gonna die one way or another, so he chose to save Claire. Great reaction!
First, the window is not necessarily wide enough to pass. When Mikhail is in front of it, you can see it is narrow. Second, Desmond told Charlie that his death was the sine qua non for saving Claire. And since everything that happened in Desmond's vision has come true before and a musician was oddly needed for the code, Charlie definitely accepted his death. He had already started doing this in "Greatest Hits" and telling Bonnie and Greta that he was going to die. So Charlie decides to let himself die and not tempt the window. Third, Dominic Monaghan wasn’t really against leaving the show.
This was Charlie's moment to be a hero. According to Desmond, Charlie was going to die...no matter how/when. This way it was on Charlie's terms...saving his friends and his family (Claire & Aaron). RIP Charlie Pace!! 💜
Yep, I think there's supposed to be some implication that maybe the flashes don't pan out exactly how Desmond sees them if something along the way changes. So I think this was Charlie dying in the hopes that it would allow Claire and Aaron to be rescued
@@george5954 the only problem with that theory is in Desmond’s vision you see Charlie helping them get her out of the tree, using the parachute as a way to catch her, he’s there with them so Desmond was always meant to save him. I think why he kept seeing him die was to prevent it from happening, he was suppose to save him all those times. if Desmond had let him die in Catch 22 then Charlie couldn’t have disarmed the jammed frequency. It had to be Charlie, that was his destiny, he was the only musician on the island and it was programmed by a musician. And also I don’t think there’s anyway for him to swim out of the hole and all the way up to the surface without drowning along the way, it’s clear he wasn’t that good of a swimmer, he just told Jack he was so he would let him go down there.
Charlie dying was my happiest moment watching the show, lol. His character was constantly annoying and superfluous. I honestly think most fans liked hm because he was riding off of good will from Lord of the Rings.

'Not Penny's Boat' Everything that came after Charlie's death I watched through uncontrollable tears (teenage me had such a crush on him), because even though I'd seen my fair share of unexpected and expected TV character deaths (specifically all of the Buffy and Angel ones) prior to LOST, like you I had hope they would find a way to save him. You can’t swim through the hole with all of that water pouring in. Watched one those “shouldn’t be alive” shows where a group’s boat flipped and they were trapped inside the hull (or cabin or whatever) with it filling with water. One of their friends had to stay behind so he could physically push them out. Edit: he had to brace himself and use his legs to push them out of the hatch
Awesome reaction as always Neil! Frankly amazing how you picked up on the flashforward about two minutes into the episode. I was 15 when this aired and it completely blindsided my teenage brain, I couldn't pick my jaw up off the floor until season 4 started airing. Speaking of which, season 4 might just be my favorite. I'm excited to see what you think of it!
WE HAVE TO GO BACK!!! Was worried you might figure this one out before the iconic ending scene. The name of the funeral parlor was an anagram for flash forward, but it was only on screen for a second or two. Re: Charlie's death. The common theorized reasoning was that since Charlie knew he was going to have to die sometime soon and that Desmond's flash described the scene exactly and if he died, Claire and Aaron would get off the island in a helicopter. So he sacrificed himself for Claire & Aaron.
And if Charlie would have gotten out... then what? A coconut would crack his head the next day. Or a shark would have eaten him. Death was coming for him, no matter what :D
Little throw away easter egg but the funeral home “hoffs drawlar” is an anagram for “flash forward”. I love that your head is spinning. Many years have passed and I continue to think about this show every day. Every day. Whether its the story telling, the acting, the messages, the themes, the mystery, the resolutions, the losses, the wins, the struggles, the inexplicable, or just the fun of all of it, it continues to reverberate in my everyday life unlike any show ever has or will.
Wow dude points for you!! I've never seen anybody guess the flash forward. I always get nervous that they will guess it when it shows the oceanic tickets, but they usually only realize it when it shows Kate.
Naomi DID claim to work for Penny when Sayid originally questions her, so there's that. Hurley running that guy down with the VW bus was one of the best moments of the episode, but I really was satisfied that Sawyer killed Tom. You can really see through the whole series that Sawyer does NOT like it when kids are traumatized, and if there's one thing he can do, it's hold a grudge. His threatening against Tom wasn't idle. And he had already killed at least one "Other" during the Trek where Michael was leading them into a trap.
I have been dying to suggest two videos for you to watch and react to. The first is a montage made by a fan way back when called 'The crash of flight 815 in real time' or something like that. It's a brilliant little piece and so much fun to watch. The second is called 'The Sri Lanka video' which was part of as game called The LOST experience. I am wondering if it should be considered canon to the show or not. It gives background information about Dharma and the numbers. It offers A SOLUTION but not necessarily THE solution to what the numbers are. It came out between seasons one and two, so I don't think it constitutes a spoiler. It wont give you information that Losties didn't have in 2005. With season three you're past that point. PLEASE consider watching these two videos and doing a little reaction to them. Just for fun. Eventually you might do reactions to all the missing pieces videos. But you're not there yet.
about Charlie's death...yes,he could have swam up but the way i see it is that he just accepted he was going to die and that was his fate. Also he thought that by him diying, Claire would get off the island so he just sacrificed himself to save Claire.
Shame you slightly ruined it for yourself by guessing at a flashforward because you were so sure they were about to be rescued. The Kate reveal at the end really hit hard when I watched it first time around, and just thinking we were seeing more Jack is a mess flashbacks.
I believe that opening/window where Charlie drowned isn't big enough to swim out, especially for passing the shoulders through. I believe because of the different lenses/camera work used in the scene (you'd probably know better as a filmmaker) it looks different sizes in different shots. Charlie knew it wasn't big enough and didn't try, in my opinion. He also didn't go to the other side of the door because 1. he didn't have time to go out, stop/explain/pull back running Desmond and shut the door from outside without risking the flooding the whole station and Desmond's death. 2. the room can't probably be locked from Desmond's side as it's an operation room and people wouldn't want to be locked in that place. All my interpretations though, not based on any proof.
Biggest sea controversy since Titanic. I think part of it is about Desmond's vision. Just like Des tried not to interfere to get Penny on the island, Charlie directly recalled the vision to be sure: his life for Claire's. Then, there's always the heat of the moment, maybe he could have survived, but I mean, he had half a second to react... This finale is so great, it's the halfway point of the show, and defines the setting for seasons to come. One thing about the flashforward: almost every twist in Lost is prepared with hints, variations of "something", so that you can be thrown off and think for a minute "oohh maybe..." and then there are 300 other things and that thought goes away. So it's natural for someone who was in filming crew to notice little technical details. But Lost is stronger than all those things, so even when you THINK something will be in a certain way, you can never be SURE (like Henry Gale!). Of course, knowing the line "we have to go back" it's much simpler to guess it was a flashforward, just because "they somehow got away" is something you take for granted.
3 seasons down, can't wait for the rest of what's to come. Another phenomenal LOST finale. I love your reaction to piecing together the timeline of the flash-forwards. I think our brains must run similarly cause I remember thinking it to be a flash-forward on my first viewing to, but even still that doesn't take away from how marvellous that final scene/reveal is executed. Just incredible. The perfect cliffhanger in a show that's filled to the brim with great cliffhangers. I mean, if that doesn't make someone want to stick around for the next season then idk what will! My favourite thing about first watching this episode was how confident the writing felt in making a decision like this. Like it gave me so much (warranted) confidence for what was coming next. As you know, the writers had already figured out a 6-season deal with ABC by now, and I think this episode is a clear sign of that. They didn't want to just aimlessly ramble around in the past with additional flashbacks to stories they felt were already told (see: the flashback plots of Locke, Kate, and Jack in 3x03, 3x06, and 3x09). Especially when on-Island stuff was starting to outweigh the before-Island stuff in terms of what the audience/writers found interesting or new. But now it started to feel like we were on a path, and boy, that feeling fills me with so much glee! Agh, can't wait for your season 3 ramblings and for whenever you start S4 :)
I have watched a lot of Lost reactions but nobody has guessed that this is a flashforward as early as you...most people get it in the last scene. Things are about to get a lot more crazy, last 3 seasons are shorter and have almost no filler. (Season 4 and 5 are my personal favorites) About Charlie not trying to save himself at the end. I think it's a combination of two factors. One is that he feels like this will keep happening and Desmond will keep having to save him because as that woman in Desmond's "flashback" said that the universe has a way of correcting things. So at least here he accepts his death and is ok dying for the cause of trying to help everyone and save Desmond. Also another is that Desmond information about Claire and the baby on the helicopter and he might feel if he doesn't die that might not happen. You will slowly start getting more answers but also new mysteries and questions. Can't wait.
How I always saw the "get my dad down here and see which of us is more drunk" line.. is that he's meaning down from heaven.. but I agree it was a bad line in my opinion as its not really something you'd say
So throwing all lore aside to give the reason Charlie was killed off. He was in a relationship with the actress that plays Kate. The relationship ended badly with her cheating on him and getting with one of the crew working on the show. The actor then asked to be written off of the show due to not wanting to continue working alongside his ex.
Why Locke didn't simply knock the walkie-talkie out of Naomi's hand with knife or gun I do not know. There was no need to kill her. Even after making that mistake, all he had to do was shoot it out of Jack's hand and destroy it. That scene doesn't make sense.
After watching this episode when it first aired there was an agonizing long wait for the next because of the Hollywood writers' strike. That sucked more than the Charlie scene.
Haha you figured out the flash forward so fast! Back in the day what made me realize it wasn’t 2004 was Jack’s phone. Those Motorola Razr are 100% post 2004, placing it post island
Another hint that this was a flash forward that the other commenters missed is the type of cell phone Jack was using. It was a Motorola Razor flip phone, which weren't introduced until after the Oceanic 815 plane crash. Just as I advised about literary references early on in the series, you might want to keep an eye on cell phone types to get a hint of when things are happening. Might be a quite a bit more difficult now that we're so far removed from when the series initially aired, but if you want to do the research...
Dominic Monaghan wanted to leave the show. I read somewhere in an old interview that he wasn't happy with the fact that his role on the show was getting smaller. Some people say it was because of his breakup with Evangeline Lilly but either way it was his choice to leave apparently.
It doesn’t matter if he could escape. Charlie was going out on his terms. Who is to say if he got out alive he wouldn’t die the next day in a random accident?
In regards to some of the comments I've read concerning Charlie's death: he didn't have to die for Claire and the others to be rescued; he just had to turn off the jamming signal. He sacrificed himself knowing he was destined to die anyway. At least this way, he died on his own terms knowing the others would be rescued. He accepted his fate. As for the vision, I think it was the island telling Desmond that Charlie had to be the one to go down to the station since the code to turn off the signal was programmed by a musician.
Honestly Is the most desapoiment reaction Ever... The big sorprise, the best twits of entire series, you "figure out" si early...mmm I don't know Rick....
I respectfully congragulate & salute you've guessed it's a flashforward right away but I'm kinda disappointed because that hunch was based on the white (really?) beard. I would have prefered to watch you're being confused and surprised like everybody else in the final scene, instead of figuring it out by a random clue that is questionable to exist in the first place. Was that beard really white and did he really look visibly old? Maybe, but I've never heard it from anybody and I seriously doubt it. I mean no disrespect though, we're here to watch your honest reaction and this is what it was but I feel like the "out of nowhere guessing" made the main spectacle of this finale a little underwhelming :) On a side note; Naomi said she's working for Penny by the way. she said something like her company was hired by Penny. Re-watch the scene she's explaining why she's on the Island to Sayid in the tent Desmond-Charlie-Hurley hiding her from Jack and other survivors.
The problem with people watching Lost nowadys is that Flashforwards became common parlance. When this came out, no one had a clue of what was going on. :)

I've seen a lot of Lost and Neil you're the first that called the Flashforward !
Bravo 👏👏👏👏
Great reaction!
It was the best early Christmas present. Back to back episodes of lost season finale
The ending is crazy! RIP Charlie Pace ❤️🥺👏🏻
"I'm still waiting for an evidence it's a flash-forward"
Sure.. because you already knew it's one beforehand.
This poor man's mind has been so thoroughly blown, I almost want to call an ambulance to go get him. 😂
Also, thanks for posting the two parts back to back. Lost finales shouldn't be split in more than one day.
Thanks for uploading both parts today Neil. Great reaction/discussion. Cheers. See you for Season 4.
And if Charlie would have gotten out... then what? A coconut would crack his head the next day. Or a shark would have eaten him. Death was coming for him, no matter what :D
See you in another life, brotha.
sawyer killing tom after he surrendered was wrong
Wrong
This ain’t over, Zeke.
Double drop. Thank you!
Thank God. Waiting for part 2 of this finale would have been torture.
7:45 I think this is my favorite of all the beatings that Ben takes throughout the series. :-D
Hurley may have been a hero running down Ryan, but now he's also a murderer.
The writers literally spelled it out for us. You just missed the anagram. So did I.
That ending absolutely blew my mind.
What are you talking about?
@@Vicious97 funeral parlor
@@qwertymanor Oh yeah i forgot about that clue ...
YES TWO EPISODES THANK YOU NIEL
Best Lost reactor on RUclips.
Oh we got part 2! I just finished 1 and was sad I had to wait tell Monday.
As to Charlie's death, I think I read somewhere that Dom asked out because he felt there were no more arcs for him
Yeah i heard he was frustrated with the fact that they kept circling around Charlie's drug use.
This is epic!! Truly reliving it through your eyes lol We're in it now! 🌴🔮🌴 Lets goooooo
I have watched a lot of Lost reactions but nobody has guessed that this is a flashforward as early as you...most people get it in the last scene. Things are about to get a lot more crazy, last 3 seasons are shorter and have almost no filler. (Season 4 and 5 are my personal favorites)
About Charlie not trying to save himself at the end.
Can't wait.
"did desmond lie?" YES
You figuring out that it was a flash forward in the very first scene was so frustrating, lol. Stop being so clever!
It was frustrating but hilarious when he kept doubting himself.
WE HAVE TO GO BAACK
Congratulations! You are the first person in the world who, before seeing Kate, was already able to discern that we are in a flash-forward.
RIP Charlie 💔
Great finale and great reaction. See you in Season 4!!!
Neil's too smart for his own good lol Saw the flashforward coming. Can't say I did when I first watched it.
I think that hole was too small and also maybe something to so with pressure?
How I always saw the "get my dad down here and see which of us is more drunk" line.. is that he's meaning down from heaven.. but I agree it was a bad line in my opinion as its not really something you'd say
We have to go back Neil, WE HAVE TO GO BAAAAAACK!
Season 4, in my opinion, and several others', is the best season. It's substantially shorter, but that means almost no filler.
Man some great episodes in season 4
You think your mind is blown you have more coming your way. haha
i love Season 1-3 soooooo much!!! so powerful
How dare you kill Regina Mikhail! LOL 😂
Season 4 was my favorite season. Can't wait to see your reaction to it. :)
You've probably already watched most of it by the time you see this. lol
As much as I love Ben, it is kind of fun seeing him get his ass handed to him.
It's always so well-deserved 😜🤣
Neil is all of us while watching charlie die the first time. thanks for posting.
Did anyone mention the funeral parlour's name yet? 😊
After watching this episode when it first aired there was an agonizing long wait for the next because of the Hollywood writers' strike. That sucked more than the Charlie scene.
03:36 The funeral parlour name HOFFS DRAWLAR is an anagram of Flash Forward.
It could also be WHARF OF LARDS. :D
Oh, and hi, Mark.
@@CraigKostelecky Hey, it could indeed lol. Not so relevant that one though!
@@markalcock You never know. Wharf of Lards could still be a thing on the show.
FYI season 4 is during the writers strike. I am assuming you are familiar with that. It is the shortest season, but still a great series of episodes.
He broke up with EL 1 or 2 years after that.
@@ptitepeluche05 I think they were off and on again.
I heard he was unhappy with the overfixation on Charlie's drug use and requested they change things up.
You can't get through the hole lol that's a thing people always say and it pisses me off lol.
Season 4 is the best, can't wait to hear your thought about it
Honestly Is the most desapoiment reaction Ever...
I mean no disrespect though, we're here to watch your honest reaction and this is what it was but I feel like the "out of nowhere guessing" made the main spectacle of this finale a little underwhelming :)
On a side note; Naomi said she's working for Penny by the way. she said something like her company was hired by Penny. Re-watch the scene she's explaining why she's on the Island to Sayid in the tent Desmond-Charlie-Hurley hiding her from Jack and other survivors.
When next series?
Fix your lighting setup.
