Mobile Suit Gundam F91 | The Gundam Retrospective (v3) (DEEP FRIED)

- Third time is the charm. any edits made since the original version are to avoid frivolous copyright takedowns by BANdai.
- THIS VIDEO CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR GUNDAM F91-
Released in 1991 Mobile Suit Gundam F91 would set out to create a brand new story in the Gundam universe. While it never spawned the sequels that it promised, this truncated movie is crammed full of underdeveloped ideas and weird occurrences. I love it, despite its flaws, and I hope you will too.

The amount of pettiness in this 3.0 release is just immaculate!
The second I saw this comment I busted out laughing.
RUclips dropped me a little quality survey under this comment, asking how I feel about it. I said it was funny, relatable, and shows appreciation for the video creator, so I guess the algorithm is attempting to learn nuance.
I don’t know why, but I feel that Bandai doesn’t want me to see this.
Bandai: lets full uploads of the movie exist on YT without lifting a finger
Also Bandai: repeatedly blocks down a review protected by fair use
Who else but Bandai!
Is it really Bandai who owns the vast percentage of that IP, or Sunrise Animation??
"Free advertising? Not on my watch!"
-Bandai, probably.
@@Johnnybomb1 Bandai owns Sunrise
If Char did that headshot Kycilia style, the iron mask would not have saved him.
That's before you find out that the helmet got Phase Shift Armor, and the bazooka projectile is somehow deflected before it explodes
Looks like BANdai wants me to watch this video for the third time
For anybody seeing this: F91 is currently uploaded in HD on youtube, so catch it before it's copyright struck!
Its not like any gundam media is that hard to find on the internet for free as you just need to know where to look.
@@_gungrave_6802 No, but this makes it easier and convenient. Also dope name, Gungrave is the shit.
@@versebuchanan512 Watching it without youtube ads is better especially since there are 3 Gundam torrent packs where you can get all of the Gundam anime. As for my name I don't like the Gungrave anime much but I liked the name of it.
@@_gungrave_6802 yep, but I souls rather watch it on RUclips with adblocker
@@_gungrave_6802 you are just a downright fun sponge.
I gotta say Iron Mask used being shot at perfectly, he realized someone had shot his helmet and he's like "YEAH TRY TO KILL ME I DARE YOU" for effect.
The F91 MS designs are dang good, in general, and certainly more streamlined and aerodynamic as far as MS goes. It's just a shame F91 itself, was never made into a full series that covered both it and the Crossbone Gundam manga.
I would absolutely love a Crossbone Anime. Even just a 10 episode OVA would be cool.
Man, when i first dipped into the rabbit hole of gunpla/gundamverse i knew gundam f91 is going to be my all time favorite design. Shame the movie ended up rather wacky
Given what a shell casing that size ought to weigh (even assuming advanced tech using lightweight materials) and how far it's falling in what looks like 1 gee, Dead Mom probably ought to have had her head crushed like an eggshell. The anime is actually being restrained about the injuries there.
I do hope if Bandai continues their "UC NEXT 100" project (hard to say since the pandemic really pushed Hathaway back and its other parts seem to be in production hell) they make a unified reboot of the F91 and Crossbone stories, retold with better pacing and of course, finally animating Crossbone Gundam. I feel like people are getting burnt out on the constant OYW and mid UC rehashes and in betweener entries.
Yha I love Zeon but it’s getting old. NT was awful. We need to move forward but we can still do regular UC as making Origin all animated to meet modern standards.
As someone with unmedicated ADHD, I found the pacing of F91 to be a breath of fresh air compared to the original 3 series. But I'm well aware that that's just me. Not everybody's brain is hardwired to enjoy a story on fast forward.
I watch everything on at least 1.5 speed, 2x even better. Really enjoyed F91.
@@rechtrechtit was a mess . Too many jumps
@@rechtrechtfuckin same
Because of Cecily's half brother people theorized that Full Frontal's purple haired follower is actually Iron Mask. Cecillly's mom DOES look a bit like a chick version of Full Frontal.
That was actually my first thought when I watched F91. I watched all of gundam in chronological order so I was like whaaa Angelo is that you ? When I saw the purple haired guy
God Angelo is such a simp
From my understanding he wasn't really into girls...
@@bryfunkenstein She looks like full frontal from behind, it'll have to do.
You can't escape it forever, Retcon. You know you have to review G-Saviour eventually 😈
I thought iron mask was incredibly silly too - but then it's revealed he's a cyber newtype, and that is par for the course
Aesthetics go so far in this entry. There's a reason why every almost every Gundam crossover game has Seabook.
I actually like how the Rafflesia mobile armors design mirrors the actual Rafflesia flower irl, aka the death flower, aka the plant found on venusaurs back in pokemon as well lol
Though fast-paced and confusing at times, I still really love F91. I mean how many times can you say that "a robot killed the main villain by spitting hot air at them"
Ugh so sorry man. Doing the bit once again because you deserve ALL the engagement (and to hopefully annoy the fanboy): There is a fun fan theory where Iron Mask is actually Angelo from Unicorn, who changed his name and is doing his best Full Frontal impression. It would certainly explain how he is a cyber newtype. Probably doesn't work, but it is some interesting head canon.
Yeah, the amount of coincidences and similarities between the two are definitely weird. Iron Mask's mobile armor is shaped like a rose (which Angelo is also fond of) and his wife even kinda resembles Full Frontal (he has a type!)
We actually have a picture of Carrozzo before his helmet so unfortunately head canon is as far as this gets.
@@nicodalusong149 Hmm is that from the film?
@@justsomeguywithsunglasses8418 Apparently, yes. There is a flashback scene where we see him without his mask with Nadia and their kids. There's also a cameo of the family in Build Fighters where Carozzo is building a kit of the Rafflesia. There's also a family portrait with pre-mask Carozzo in it (but that's not in the show but from supplemental material). The thing to note is that in the shows, Carozzo has greyish hair (the color choice makes it look super light purplish) while in the family portrait his hair is clearly cream-ish blonde.
Edit: The portrait is from the novel of F91.
@@nicodalusong149 Interesting! I don't actually think it is real and just fun headcanon; however, unless Sunrise has animated the portrait in main UC entries, it doesn't really count as canon to the timeline...In other words, I'll still keep this fun little thing at the back of my mind...because it makes F91 a MUCH more interesting watch as a result lol
Carozzo looks like a hokey combination of Darth Vader and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Man in the Iron Mask
Love how you poking jabs at the dumb copyright strikes they tend to do. I laughed the second the Bandai says this is naughty . The Battlefield part had me rolling
I forgot where I read it, but I remember seeing this article saying that Tomino wanted F91 to be more easy to understand than CCA. Talk about ironic
I really wish they would turn F91 into a proper series and then follow that up with Crossbone Gundam. I would love to see a more explored outlook in UC during the F91 era because it's so far removed from the One Year War.
@Retcon_404 As you know, Carozzo "Iron Mask" Ronah is the Dragon-in-Chief, the actual main villain is his Father-in-law Meitzer Ronah.
I really enjoyed F91. After watching it, I thought to myself, "wow, I think I'm a Gundam fan." I just want more dammit!
If the original series was condensed into 1 movie instead of 3, it would probably feel similar to F91.
missed the first 2 but got to the 3rd one, pretty hilarious. The F91 Gundam really does look so cool.
F91 ripoff of the Imperial March is so egregious, one of the first things I noticed when I listened to the soundtrack on CD 😂
here's something interesting to note Letz Kobayashi and Kikka Kitamoto would still be alive during the events of Gundam f91 0123 Letz would be 50 and Kikka would be 48.
The ending of the movie is for certain the basis of inspiration of that space scene in Final Fantasy VIII.
Just as the ending of Char's Counterattack probably inspired Final Fantasy VII's finale, with the Lifestream and all that.
Considering that the Emerald Weapon was almost a wholesale copypasta of the Neue Zeil, I'd say that your assumption is a safe one.
I love how westerners see something as “unique and creative,” when they just rip something off from Gundam. There’s probably tons of examples, but the most obvious one is Code Geass. I would say it’s a lesser One Year War
Oh yeah, that happened!!! Jajajaja
@@thomasffrench3639 "westerners"
Ok, *Thomas*
The red mobile armor is actually a flower after its name, Rafflesia.
I can't help but think about Bandai... And their thoughts on my seeing this video...
Can't imagine why, though. So weird
The Bugs remind me of the intelligent Hunter-Seekers that are mentioned in the later Dune books
Bandai doesn't want you to see this.
Will you be talking about Unicorn? It's my favorite of the series, specifically because of how hammy it is. An earnest plot about possibility, especially how little changes following it, makes it both poignant and very tragic considering what could have been.
yeah I'll be talking about that one eventually for sure. I've already seen a bit of it, but im interested to see it the whole way through.
Be careful with Victory Gundam. It will be a rollercoaster of emotions.
So Bandai struck this down, but there’s a 1 year old video with the entire film. Good job RUclips!
Well it could be that she really did develop the bio-computer to help humanity, then the military took it and stuck it into said giant robot, or she couldn't get funding for the work without letting the military do that with it.
After all these years I still like this movie, despite its chophouse editing. It's not the worst compilation film made from a truncated 50 episode script I've seen. There were a lot of good ideas buried in F91 that I liked, like Contact Link communications and the compact Mobile Suit engineering.
I agree about F91's design being one of my favorite suit designs in the post Zeon era. Interestingly enough, my first UC based kits were from the Silhouette Formula F91 line, long before I even built the first MG F91. If you ever get a chance, the Master Grade Version 2.0 model is a stellar upgrade.
Man they really want your pocket change
That's what it feels like! If bandai needs the 35 cents so bad I'll go buy a gunpla just leave the video alone! Lol
New reactors helped to make the MS smaller too, they could be small but still crank out the juice which is why the MS in Zeta and up to that point were all so damn big. Turns out the thruster engine tech and beam tech just kept getting better and the only way to power them all was a bigger reactor but the MS got slow so more power to the movement systems and so on until you get things like the Doven Wolf or the Nu Gundam or Sazabi which were monster sized. The Cross Bone MS in universe could zip circles around Jegans with power enough to spare to power I-field shields which make them harder to kill if you even hit them. Kinda smart how they came up with this to justify smaller MS and actually throw the "good guys" on the back foot.
Absolutely here for this video AGAIN!!! Love it!!!
"That's bad."- BANDAI.
Luckily for me, I know that being bad feels SO GOOD.
I already watched this in its full first version so I'll leave a like and I'll try to rewatch it to support you my friend
Thank you, you've done more than enough!
24:07 Not actually how fusion reactors work, but it's been something tehy keep doing since 0079 if I remember. Gundam was Stackpoling before Stackpole.
I commend your efforts to get this videos posted. You are a big inspiration!
Great commentary, I just finished F91 and didn’t have a clue what was going on!!
i feel the deja vu of a deja vu, i think im newtype now
You can't blame F91 as the worst Gundam show, it's just a good series that forced to be a movies. (I'd blovw to see F91 re made as TV series/Part 2 where the conflict much more fleshed out)
It would have definitely been an interesting show and would have made more sense. I do love the F91 too.
Wouldn’t it have been a TWIST if it turned out the Crossbone Vanguard got the wrong kid
This has been revised so much we're overdue for a ver. Ka
In terms of mecha design, F91 is underrated. In terms of plot - underdeveloped because of all this "series to movie" thing. Sometimes I wish there was an actual series.
Are we going to ignore the fact that most of the time cockpits were open a lot in the movie?!
But yeah despite it being rushed it was still a good watch.... plus Crossbone was pretty good too.
Also will you be reviewing Victory Gundam? :D
Working on the Victory Gundam video right now actually!
I finally got around to watching this. I liked seeing the future UC, and damn do I wish more of these suits got high grade kits, but it reaaallly would have benefited from being a full TV show :(
It really had some great ideas, would have loved to see a full length show with it's general plot and themes.
Great work, you deserve more subscribers👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Bandai: Covering any other Gundam show, sleeps.
Also Bandai: Covering an okay concept movie with unintentionally funny things when it's trying to be serious? Real stuff, takedown imminent.
F91 is decent with some of its concepts, but that's all they are at the end of the day, concepts. If it's not executed well, it doesn't matter what the intent behind them is. Seeing huge shell casings bonk someone and killer death robots made me laugh when I took a break from UC and came back to it. Real Tomino stuff going on with those. Pacing is pretty atrocious but it was probably the best they could do with what they had. I can't say it's anything remarkable personally, but it at least makes me curious about the Crossbone Gundam series if they ever get peddled to the West in some way.
The F91 gunpla looked dope.
Bandai doesn't want you to watch this! Bandai doesn't want you to watch this! Bandai doesn't want you to watch this! Bandai doesn't want you to watch this! Bandai doesn't want you to watch this. This Bandi watch doesn't to you! Watch this Bandai doesn't want you to!
Just having fun. Thanks for the V3 of this video. Keep up all your hard work in making these vids. Very well done, clear, clean, and well voiced!
i liked the part of this video that bandai didn't want me to see
How many times does a series end with a person or people floating in space? Gundam 0079 Movie 3, Gundam Zeta Movie 3, this, Seed. Am I missing any others?!
Best Gundam design
Mask opening the Vignagina cockpit (by hand) and then throwing Cecily off to the void of space was so fucking cold.
Seabook vs bugs. I'm gonna go into the battle field spinning my sabers like this, and if you get hit it's gonna be your fault.
and to be fair it did work, I dont know why they don't do that more often!
I really liked F91. Was very different and I wanted to more.
Then I found out it’s as far as UC got in animation.
it's not. Victory Gundam is the furthest UC got in terms of animated entries.
@@kelnhide cool, hopefully victory gets a Blu Ray release in the UK one day from all the anime.
Technology might lead to miniaturization but when it comes to military equipment they tend to grow in size. This is because of the age old thinking of commanders and planners of “well now that it’s smaller and lighter, you can carry more of it now.” And “well now that the power plant can handle more weight, add more fuel and armor and bigger weapons on it.”
If they made F91 into a full series, it would have performed better if executed well.
"Lets use the children as human shields!" is definitely one of hte higher up Federation Asshole moments for me. And very memorable.
You’ve saved me 16.22 on this one as well as ever considering watching any V gundam!
Great video! Please consider doing a review of Gundam X at some point. A great non-UC Gundam show that got the short end of the beam saber!
I'm actually starting my watch of X today
The mother getting hit by the shell casing was the most memorable of this movie for me, that is really effective way to show "colateral damage", still make me sad.
Maybe the real F91 retrospective is the edits you made along the way. gonna finish watching it this time. hoping it won't get taken down
I saw it in the theater when it came out and I remember enjoying it. Yes the plot is hard to follow but for a kid a plot in a mecha fight anime is secondary at best.
F91 needs some love as it has one very cool protag who goes on to do amazing things in the series after Crossbone, which also needs some love as that series is just beautiful.
I don't know man, something tells me Bandai doesn't want us to see this.
Watching F91 I was totally confused, there’s too much going on with odd pacing, I can see now that this is a feature and a bug of the development hell of the franchise, I can’t say I have any love for this franchise, also it’s barely set in UC and that makes it hard to relate to
“This is just the beginning”
*never gets any sort of sequel or continuation at all* lmao
(It did, it’s the Gundam Crossbone manga)
@@TheCrawl I need some animation though lol.
If you have read the manga; is it worth picking up?
I barely touched the manga, the artstyle creeps me out. The characters have this weird pseudo-chibi design that makes them look like they're 6 years old.
Since this is version 3.0, I think I talk about the order I watched Gundam.
I saw Unicorn on TV, thought it was pretty good, but had no clue what anyone was talking about. I looked into it a bit and realized most Gundam shows have no plot connection at all, so I decided to watch all of UC in release order. (so that order would be 0079, Zeta, ZZ, Char's Counter Attack, War in the Pocket, F91, Stardust Memory, Victory, 8th MS Team, Unicorn, the Origin, Thunderbolt, then Narrative [Hathaway hadn't been made yet])
I'm really glad I decided to digest it that way; there's a moment in Origin that hits you with a track from 79's OST. Made me feel something that's honestly hard to describe.
It was after finishing Unicorn that I started watching the AU/different timeline shows, and I tried to do that in chronological order until Seed. Since apparently the rights for releasing Seed in the US are a mess (not as much of a mess as Macross though). I kinda had to skip to AGE.
15:08 honestly feels more WW1 with the gasmask look. Nobody was really wearing gasmasks much in WW2. Even the head vulcans seem more like the Frankenstein bolts that were on the late WW2 german helmets but deleted by the time the nazis were in power.
It's really important to strike this video that explicitly tells its audience that the movie is worth checking out and encourages them to purchase the blu ray.
Even though the story is a mess but thr mobile suits designs are great
Im not sure if you saw this movie or you just didnt notice but You forgot to mention the GMs from chars counter attack are also in this movie as well.
I love Gundam F91, but it's because my first contact with it was playing a Japanese Super Famicom game. The Super Gachapon World SD Gundam X. A turn based strategy game with real time battles of the mobile suits. It was really good.
It might just be me but I feel the joke bandai doesn't want you to see this would be better suited (pun intended) for mobile suit Gundam saviour as not only is it the we don't talk about this for Gundam, bandai has even admitted to how bad it was as well lol
Edit: you do know that f91 takes place after char's counterattack right? I'm thinking it was u.c. 123 if I'm not mistaken, the only reason I bring this up is you keep comparing it to older suits that where it predecessor like they where it was it successor which is wrong and yes that also means by anime timeline Gundam started 18 meters and keep getting taller till the end of Hathaway flash and then started shrinking to smaller sizes after that point. Which honestly seems kinda dumb but I guess by military standards and time changing then stuff like that is normal?
Yeah I know it takes place after CCA. I was just comparing the suits to each other.
Ohh damn the intro brings back some memories 😔❤️
You know, I get the weird feeling that Bandai doesn’t want me to see this.
Might try listening to this one later like a podcast. Just started watching your videos and the g Gundam/Victory Gundam and wing Gundam ones I watched so far were great. But the text thing made this too difficult to watch. Hopefully none of the others give you issues. Keep up the good work with future videos
Of all the old stuff I think this one is the best candidate for being remade/brought forward. Maybe, in 2060 when Hathaway pt 3 is done, we'll see that happen.
Will it stick this time? Well, here it goes. Oh dear F91, you can tell this sucker was planed as a full series because it's basically a really condensed compilation movie. I honestly think the best way to look at it is as a prequel to the (supposedly) excellent Crossbone Gundam manga. The F91 itself is kind of meh, but that's mainly because I'm not a big fan of most of the Gundam designs themselves. They just tend to be a bit cookie cutter in design aesthetics for me. Like the wing protrusions coming from the shoulders, I mean I know that they can make it fly though to be honest they look like giant cooling vents. I do respect the big old V.S.B.R cannons on the sides not gonna lie. Though at least the F91 did serve as a basis for the design of the much cooler Crossbone Gundam (because Pirate.) For those asking my personal favorite Gundam designs are more along the lines of the Epyon, Deathscythe, Banshee and the Master Gundam, basically evil looking Gundams and mobile suits.
Those wing protrusions are in fact giant cooling vents, when F91 activates it’s biocomputer it generates a ton of heat, so they added cooling vents on the shoulders, built the majority of the chest armor as a heat sink, and added an additional function where the face plate pops open to act as another vent
@@ma-08bigzam78 “Hey Big Zam!”
I mean, this had so many potential, i remember seeing the movie and thinking in how a show might be great, trying to figure the arcs showd and how It could be awesome, its so sad whats happend to this story in the end
1: Outside of One Year War or related series, 0083 for example, that could reuse older molds and such... Mobile Suits didn't return to the original Gundam size scaling until Turn A Gundam.
2: F91, IIRC, technically takes place inside a colony so the MS would be easier to make fly. Much like the Zaku FZ in 0080 hovering.
If this gets taken down again just label the next version, ver Ka
I think bandai DOES want me to see this, like G Savior
As someone who loves Zeta, yeah, I really like the mech designs in this one.
Comment, take 3.
Watch this last week and forgot all about it
Is there a way to watch version 1.0 of this review?
For what it’s worth, I really enjoyed F91 and want them to continue the story or at least put crossbone into an anime because I was really intrigued by the whole story and seabook and Cecily
It did lead to Crossbone which lead to some pretty badass designs.
Honestly, if Bandrise wants to revisit this and flesh out F91 into a proper OVA, I'd be on board.Likewise, would be totally open to Bandai doing an F90 series with the Oldsmobile Army/Mars Zeon.
Those bugs look like they'll more at home in ZZ Gundam.
I really love the Mobile Suits in F91. Wanted to read Crossbone but the artstyle i just couldn't
As a film student developing a Gundam documentary, Bandai's copyright does scare me. Does anyone know of a good place to upload it? Please give me recommendations in these comments, and I'll make a note to check it week by week.
Side note: I love your channel's Gundam content! I appreciate you covering basically everything in the franchise. Your commentary is unobtrusive, and your editing is very lighthearted, which is needed in this day and age.
Oh god... Those bugs are HELIANTHUS machines
I just watched the movie for the first time. The animation is really good but yeah this feels like a series crammed into a movie as the scenes zip around so much you get whiplash and the overall plot seems half baked at worst and SUPER rushed at best.
