  • I take a look at Patrick Tam’s gun fu laced romantic melodrama from 1989.
Correction (0:31) Rick escapes to the Philippines, not Thailand.

Great review and great film! Just one thing, the film didn't copy moves from Wong Kar-Wai. Christopher Doyle, who did the cinematography here, started working with Wong Kar-Wai just after this film came out. It's more the other way around, Wong Kar-Wai was influenced by Patrick Tam (his mentor) who directed this one. But I think you're totally right, this feels like a stylistic mix of John Woo/Wong Kar-Wai and that's what I love about it.

Ah yes, excellent point. In my head “As Tears Go By” had at least come out before this, but it hadn’t.

I think Wong Kar Wai is credited in some of the Patrick Tam movies.

I need to grab a copy of this. Two other film channels I'm subbed to both covered this and I really feel your review is the best one out of them. Great job on this.

Bro, your passion for film is inspiring. I didn’t even know who Jon Woo was until recently with the drop of Netflix’s The Killer I saw some comparisons being made in the comments and someone dropped his name, and I discovered this channel. I gotta check out these action packed films. I’m not too familiar with action stars from the east except for Andy On & Philip Ng. I will definitely check out these gems.

I saw this at Metrograph and found out through their description of the film that Tam actually inspired War Kong Wai so Patrick Tam didn't copy but more so helped paved the way

Yeah, another comment mentioned that as well, and I’ve since leaned more about Tam’s work and influence - I’d word that segment differently if I could do it again. But the style of the film does feel like a combination of what people love about Wong Kar-wai and John Woo

A very special film, from a special director. His film Nomad with young Leslie Cheung is one of the best examples of the early eighties HK new wave cinema.
This one's plot is somewhat an indirect metaphor to HK history and pre-handover anxiety. Being lead where you don't wanna go, living the destiny you can't change, that kind of fatalism. Very stylish movie, too. Kenny is a HK golden boy since the seventies, but originally more in music. My favourite of his movie roles are this one, Shanghai Blues and Millionaire's Express.

Masterpiece, I was lucky enough to see that in 35mm. His way of editing is the most recognisable in the HK scene. If you want to dig more, "Patrick Tam: from the heart of the new wave" by A. Pezzotta is essential, it contains tons of information about him and the new wave scene in general.

Nice this one is a hidden gem indeed hope you cover more hidden gem heroic bloodshed films like this from the 80s one of the reasons I love HK action/crime films from this era is that they reminded me of our own Indian movies that mix serious action packed stories and mix them quite often with family or romantic melodrama I think this kind of genre is pretty well done in the Yakuza game series too which feel even more like our masala films which mix various themes and genres together.

Hey man, great stuff. I’ve also been obsessed with John Woo’s Hong Kong movies since high school (I’m 36) and been looking for other heroic bloodshed stuff and haven’t found much that I really like. Can you recommend anything else

Aside from this, and the other films I’ve covered on the channel (Breaking News, Just Heroes, The Replacement Killers Extended Cut) I’d also suggest Exiled, Vengeance, and Drug War directed by Johnnie To. Wild Search and Full Contact (both with Chow Yun-Fat) directed by Ringo Lam are also solid, if little different/more gritty in how they approach the genre
