I bought one but it won't fit in my Honda. It sure is a slow walk back to North Carolina from Oklahoma. She walks faster when I hold the sugar bag out the window.
I just bought a highland cow approximately 1,500-1,800 pounds she is in calf/pregnant and AHCA registered and she’s an award winner show cow for $5000. Prices are really set due to the farmer/owner rating what offspring she produces. Prices are all over the place. I’ve seen them go for $8,000-$10,000.
Oh I agree, prices are pretty volatile. I saw some unregistered heifer go for 7,000 here last summer. The most I've spent on an AHCA personally was 3,300. But I know some of those great quality ones go for much more.
watched a few of your videos on the highlanders and keep up the great work . Very informative and honest a real nice change... thanks for your efforts and we will keep an eye on your station..
We started our herd with registered Highlands, but found that our buyers were not interested in showing them. So now we sell purebred unregistered ones. Look for good confirmation, solid hooves, and an easy disposition.
Oh I can't wait to start homesteading. I was about ready to purchase land and then covid hit. Now I guess I will try to save up and get land later. Want some Highlanders, some milk sheep, pasture pigs, and egg laying chickens. Obviously just going to start one at a time and add as I am able to. Currently in the city and just grow a garden with everything. This video was so helpful!
That's great, I hope you are able to find some land and get started soon! one at a time is how we got started, it makes the process a little easier to learn I think.
I subscribed the this channel a while ago and then more recently Cross Timber bison. I love the Scottish Highlands and now I watch the bison also. I'll never own either probably but love watching them.
I’m researching this breed because I saw some not 20 miles away, and then I find you, just about 3 hours drive away, and I’m thinking about getting a few.
These prices have increased quite a bit over the past couple of years, especially in the registered cattle. But good deals can still sometimes be found, good luck!
When their babies they are so cute and then when they're adults they're pretty cool I like them but I'm also part of Scottish so I'm all for that God bless
We have a hard time selling them around our area.... the market wants black slick haired cows. Trying to spread the word locally on the quality of highland beef.
Ya I would say most people in our area just raise commercial beef cattle like Angus. You wouldnt get very good prices at all if you took a highland to the stockyards.
11:12 This part of the video was funny because a serious presentation about the price of cows was ongoing and the herd seemed to fuss endlessly. It was like work from home videos with the kids destroying the house in the background. lol.
I have one calf this year that I believe is crossed with an Angus. Basically he is less hairy and has no horns, and he is also bigger than the other calves his age
Took part in an online Auction this past week. We were looking for 2 heifers to start. On average they went for 15K, highest was 49K. Bulls were cheaper averaging 8K. These were all registered and came with DNA tests. Still was a bit surprised.
Hello, fellow Oklahoman here (Central). How much land would you suggest for a pair of Highlands? I have 5 aces that is mostly wooded. I just cleared about an acre that I’m putting a barn on and planned to use the rest of that acre as pasture. Thoughts?
I've got a friend right now that has 3 Angusand their calves on 6 acres. He is only making it work because he is doing rotational grazing. This will be his first winter with them and I'm a little nervous they will eat every bit of the grass away. However the typical rule of thumb is 2 acres per head. Good luck!
That's way cheaper what you paid or said about both registered or unregistered cows/bulls/steers/heifers. I saw one RUclipsr (can't share name) purchased a white/silver highland heifer at $4000 at auction (not sure if heifer is registered or not) in the state of Florida.
@@100AcreWoodHighlands $4000 for just one heifer is way to expensive investment. Anyway, I'll be looking for the price range what you discussed in the video. Helps a lot, thanks!
I have 6 highlands mine are primarily grass fed typically 1 round bale per month per cow so roughly $80 a month here in pennsylvania plus probably $20 a month grain so I figure $100 a month per cow
Can they be yoked like oxen? I'd love a stout hearted bull to help me haul big things around my husband's vast family farmstead when we retire there. They are too adorable and magnificent to eat.
If you're going to keep any of the offspring then you have to sell the bull every few years. For example we only kept white walker for 2 years and now we have a new bull
I buy the meat from a local farmer who raises and finishes them on grass and the meat is of excellent quality. Lean but tender because the fat is more integrated through the meat, so it cooks up great.
I don't personally know anyone in Alabama that raises them but it gets above 100 here too. At my place they stay down by the water and in the shade a lot in the summer

Excellent
To cut back on antibiotics and parasites do you mob graze them? And if so is a 2 acre lot sufficient enough for a minimum of 2?
