Great video! Having pots with holes is relatively new. Nurseries still grow their orchids in closed plastic pots without holes. Plants respire through their leaves.

great video che. Thanks. I really like how you have clearly thought about every aspect, you researched it well and instead of trying to copy what others do you have tried to understand what orchids need and tried to provide it based on your climate using common sense - not copying others step by step. I love that approach which is the best way to be a good orchid grower in my opinion. Obviously other growers have taught me lots but I mostly ignore what others do or advise, I observe my orchids, I try different methods and try to find new ways of doing things. Inorganic growing can be tricky at times but so can growing in a pot of bark that degrades. The bottom line for me is that if you try to understand what they need then growing in inorganic is really good but if you just try to copy what others tell you to do you will never do as well as with organic like bark which is much easier to copy without much understanding of how to grow orchids yet. Sometimes I wonder whether inorganic growing is right for everyone. I don't think it is. I think most will always do better growing organically and even though I believe inorganic is easier long term with better results, hardly anyone seems to be able to do it. So it is really refreshing to see you do so well with your orchids. Thank you for that.

Hi Che, may i request u make a video on orchids mediums. based on your experience- feature each of the different mediums, and why to use them in which orchid and micro environment. Pros and cons, etc.
    1. Charcoal, 2. Leca /hydroton, 3. Lava rocks, 4. Moss, 5. Bark, 6. Coco husk, others…

I purchased two ceramic pots with no holes in them at a home sale. I later discovered how useful such pots are when I received my first orchids. I repotted those orchids into a plastic pot with holes in the bottom and sides and then placed that pot into the decorative pots that I had previously purchased. When I water those orchids I pour water into the pot and let it sit for a few minutes, then pour the water out of the catch pot and place the orchid back into the catch pot. This keeps a somewhat humid environment for the roots but they still get air. I use mostly bark and charcoal with a little chunky perlite as the medium. I have a small amount of moss in there also. During the winter when it is much drier I place moss along the top. The orchids have been thriving under those conditions.

Hi Che, after seeing your video's in many session makes me change the way I pot my orchids with pots like yours without side holes or ventilation and I notice my orchids are happy with it and grow well. Except fertiliser which you use where I don't have it in my country. sad.

All praise for your wonderful orchid garden. I am from Kolkata (India) which is a Tropical wet and dry climate with a mean temperature of 28 degree C while max temp in May May riise to around 40 degree C and fall to around 14 degree C. I have brought home one Spot Queen orchid in a transparent plastic pot without any side slits. I have kept this transparent pot within a porcelain pot. So I can only see and feel the upper Layer of the coconut husk and charcoal. How to understand if the roots below are dry or wet?

It’s best to put holes in the pots or get pots with holes if you have lots of rain, high humidity etc. . Remember in nature they grow up in and on trees - no soil, no bark, etc. they like their roots to get plenty of air and humidity but dry off quickly. Most people end up over time killing their plants by overwatering and killing the roots.
She at least does have plenty of bottom holes. Sometimes in really dry hot areas, you can get away with not having side holes, and in plastic pots where they are inside in heating and air conditioning which lowers the humidity. Everyone’s environment is different and you have to take that into consideration. Always remember - under watering and over watering can both cause similar side effects. Orchids love clean, fresh, low tds water.
Actually in her environment(high humidity, lots of rains) - if grown outside, they need clay pots with lots of holes so they can dry fast and not rot. But she is not growing outside - inside and under cover.
If your plants start to have yellow leaves, lots of spots, rotting roots, etc - something is a problem. Take care of it right away. Keep up with what your plant needs culture wise and if it has time periods it should be dormant and no water. Plants like dendrobiums have multiple types - some grow year round, and others don’t and must not be watered or fed. Roots should be most of the year on those growing year round or in greenhouses, etc - be healthy white with bright green root tips. Sometimes root tips are pinkish or brown/pin. But most of the time they are bright lime green on the tips. The tip can be varying lengths. Roots should be white and healthy when dried off, will be silver when dry and ready for watering, and bright green when just well watered. If your roots are dehydrated and brown etc - they have root rot diseases. If leaves are puny and limp they aren’t getting adequate and right type of nutrients, need light, humidity, circulation, ventilation, etc.
A excellent website for orchid care is St Augustine Orchid Society in Florida- one of the, if not the fastest growing, most modern, up to date society in the US. Most of their information is free, and there are lots of culture information from many long held orchid experts. Many have grown for decades to a lifetime, show their plants and get awards, breed plants via hybrids and also doing meristems. They have very inexpensive membership like $20 which I think helps them keep up with great articles, researching , having clinic, etc. If you can , help them out. They are very friendly and if you live in Florida or nearby where you can drive over each month - think you would enjoy their meetings. I unfortunately live too many states away. But I try to keep up my membership. The website and newsletter person Sue Bottom received a life time achievement award for their service to the industry. Her husband does great photographs. And she along with a number of the members write article for the American Orchid Association.
