Knowing you irl, I can say that I'm always inspired by your positivity and energy that you bring to both your musical performances and your creative projects. I really enjoyed this video and hearing you reflect on your journey. I hope that you continue to find joy in the process of creating content even though you haven't popped off yet and even though it doesn't seem like your hardwork and innovations are being noticed by many. Maybe collabing with some other music vgm youtubers would help you gain more exposure? I remember collabs being big a few years ago and it was really fun doing the Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog collab with Deckles. Thank you for telling your story! Honestly I’m in a similar boat when it comes to doing RUclips for approximately the same amount of time with even less results happening over the course of time. Though instead of musical endeavors I kinda branched into video let’s plays, occasional vocal covers , or whatever I felt like doing and keeping a daily schedule going for like…probably a decade straight. And I’ve been so close to hitting a thousand subscribers for many years with very few videos popping off. Like I remember I made an Accapella cover of the furret walk meme and that took off for a bit but a bunch of my highly edited LP videos or stream VODS don’t really get the same viewership and so I’m kind of in a stagnation period (not to mention personal things in the background that I’m also dealing with). I also fell under the mentality that the number doesn’t really matter to me, yet the fact that either nobody really saw/cared to see the content I would make, WHILE I’m working full time ontop of that, it made me think several times on if it was even worth it for me being sub 1k for 16 years. I’m glad though that you’ve still found a way to keep doing what you love to do! Even if you’re still trying to capture that lightning in a bottle again, you definitely have a creative edge to the stuff you do! Here’s to your future growth!! 👌🏾

tl;dr: you will not regret subscribing / joining his streams. i jumped on the elementality train after the volo reaction, those vids were my drug at the time. and seeing that video showed me way more than just his reaction, the piano controller was CRAZY. i made a comment like "how are you this underrated", dropped a subscription, left. next thing i know i'm getting shorts from this channel, eventually joined a stream on youtube, then twitch. i've been having a great time since. honestly those not watching the streams are seriously missing out.

That's totally okay too! It's not for everyone. It sounds like you at least dipped your toes to get an idea. There's nothing wrong with starting up again if you ever feel inspired to pursue it.
It's not that you failed. It's that combo of not getting lucky and poor video timing. A lot of youtube is really dependent on luck and timing. If you enjoy doing it, you didn't fail you just didn't famous as you wanted. As long as you got those 1 or 2 people that comment on a video or even pull someone into it for more than a minute, you've succeeded. Not all success has to be huge.
You are absolutely right. Thankfully I do enjoy making the content that I do, regardless of where it goes. I'm a sucker for watching my own videos often haha. I think I have a good balance of accepting where I am and being content with it while also striving to keep improving and growing!
My channel has been around for a similar length of time as yours, we get similar average views, we have a similar amount of subscribers, and both of us have had a few videos that have blown up and been wildly successful for our standards. My top video has 80k. I haven't been making videos on other channels since the 2000s like you, but I think there are a number of parallels between where we're at right now. For me, I've had multiple opportunities to chase after a successful idea. A significant portion of my audience are Marilyn Manson fans and I would probably have a lot more subscribers if I stuck to Marilyn Manson videos. The problem with that, however, is however much instant growth I'd get, it would be followed by a plateau that would be hard to break out of, because that niche is ultimately still going to be pretty small. And then of course, I wouldn't be able to make videos about other things that I'm really interested in, like Italian Fascism and English Hill Figures. My biggest video was about AVGN, and I could have ridden that wave by making a bunch more videos about people like Spoony, Lindsay Ellis, the Irate Gamer, etc. Many, many people who have done videos about AVGN have ended up going that route and it's worked out well for them. But no, I'd rather not do that sort of thing, because what I really want is to build a niche around myself. I want an audience who is going to come to see me, and my personality. I make my personality a big part of my videos and I want that to be the selling point of my channel, even though I make a lot of videos about topics rather than about myself. But those were always the youtubers I liked to watch: ones who were selling themselves and their personality rather than making their videos as products. I call it "product-based" youtubers vs "personality-based" youtubers. A product-based youtuber is CGP Grey. Now, it happens, he also has a really interesting personality that made his podcast "Hello Internet" endlessly enjoyable, both for how likable and for how frustrating he was. But when you hear him talk about his videos, it's clear that he views every video as a product that he makes and ships out, and that product is enjoyed by the viewer. He sees himself as the creator of things, whereas a personality based youtuber sees their channel as where they go to express themselves. Personality youtubers can be wildly successful, but there's no golden rule that you have to follow to get there. A lot of it seems based on luck and timing, and a lot of it is based on people accidentally finding niches because they end up making a lot of content in a similar style. But then I think about the vlog youtubers back in the day who became wildly successful, such as my favorite one, Alex Day. His gimmick was that there was no gimmick. He would just sit in a room and tell you about something that happened to him, but his personality was so unbelievably special and brilliant that you couldn't help but get addicted to his videos. That's the kind of success I wish I could have. I don't think my personality is as electric as Alex's, but I do have a lot of other skills that make up for that. It's just finding the audience that is going to appreciate the whole package.

I love creating, especially as a musician, but even music related projects can feel less like a form of expression and more of a product when promoted or showcased the wrong way.

Im gonna be completely honest but it could be just me, your thumbnails dont look like something id click on except for this one cuz its interesting to hear the games you play arent interesting to me you say you play what you want to play.. but in the youtube life people play what is popular its life.. to get somwhere you gotta play the gamesthat are popular
