This is so awesome!!!!! I'm thinking about going to Luther this fall and Craig Arnold directed All-State choir my sophomore year.....he is awesome and this choir is amazing!
@steelvenom2003 I also have a recording of The St Olaf Choir from the '70s when Dr. Arnold was in it. His interpretation is identical to Kenneth Jennings'. I also have a recording of The Concordia Choir w/ Paul J Chrisiansen was conducting. PJC's approach was stronger, less fluid more marked. Dr. Arnold takes it up a 1/2 step, as did Jennings, which makes it easier for the 2nd Basses to sound the low E flat on their verse.
@kostumeman: those are luftpauses - intentional lifts in the phrase, not any inability to complete phrases. Standard performance practice with this piece.
It seems like a conscious decision to have them lift the phrase there. I don't think it has anything to do with a lack of ability to breathe/phrase correctly.
Fantastic. However, it's blatant that the sopranos and altos have trouble with their breathing support/ completion of the phrases at 1:00 and at 1:45. Tripped up both times in same stanzas. How can the director let this get through, without having half of each group stagger breathing to keep the strains complete?
Fulling disagree. When directing a choir, a conscientious decision to "lift the phrase" for a breath is to exactly make the "lift" be clean, concise and NOT be an obvious "gasp" when the vocal sound CLEARLY sounds weak/abrupt. It's like ending a phrase in song and not giving a little punch to enunciating an ending consonant sound...
reecty01- they are very good, but not in the same league as St. Olaf, King's College Cambridge, or Choir of New College Oxford. Too many mistakes in tempo and entrances.
They definitely make a joyful noise unto the Lord. And this joyful noise serves as a true inspiration to all who hear then. Well done!!!
A foretaste of heavenly music
I wept like a baby... Oh how my soul...
Hallelujah! Praise be to the Lord!
Gorgeous!!! Clarity, Intonation, and Expression, all in perfect balance. Bravi!

Aitkensays kkmmmm
Are these people from Decorah Iowa?
That would be correct, Luther College is located there.
Is there any way I could get an MP3 of this? It is DIVINE
Much warmer-toned and angelic performance in comparison to the harsh, almost angry sounds of the St. Olaf Choir (when Jennings was conductor).
I agree with you.b

Grinch.
Marv Andersen Maybe. Doesn't mean I'm wrong.
It does actually
I've listened to both. For me, the warmth of this wins. Beethovan said something like: "Music, without passion, is nothing." This choir had passion.
This choir never dissapoints!!!
