    Actually, as a professional, you DO need to shampoo before conditioning. Shampoo is basic, it opens the hair cuticle to wash away the grime. Conditioner is acidic, it closes your cuticle and seals it tight to get a nice shine.
    You WANT a closed cuticle.

    • @lollipopgal1000
      @lollipopgal1000 6 лет назад +31

      Plus shampoo basically removes oils and natural nutrients so by using shampoo after conditioner you’re basically removing the conditioner. It’s like putting moisturiser on your skin then having a shower and using body wash, it’s pointless

    • @ambrosevictoria8229
      @ambrosevictoria8229 6 лет назад +5

      I pre condition to washing just because i want softer more manageable hair that dosent break when i wash it. So it works on occasion but i wouldnt make a heavy habit out of it.
      The best way to deal with this is to deep condition on a regular basis.

    • @ambrosevictoria8229
      @ambrosevictoria8229 6 лет назад +9

      But the OBVIOUS answer to this is to re- condition.

    Loved when "lighter hair in the summer and darker hair in the winter" was mentioned. It always seemed so stupid, we aren't sheep we don't need seasonal hair

    • @letsgoasuka
      @letsgoasuka 7 лет назад +53

      Right! Same deal with 'seasonal makeup' bright lip colours and lighter makeup in summer/spring and vampy, sultry, darker lip colours in autumn/winter....I'll wear whatever colours I like, whenever I want thanks!

      Left my last stylist for this reason. Wth? I asked for lowlights in April bc my hair was tooooo light. She said we can do that in the fall. Did it myself and quit getting haircuts. Just trimmed around my face and my hair has never looked better. 💇🏼

    It makes me think of all the products labelled as "nourishing"... Where you look at the ingredients, you see water, that's normal, and then alcohol... But alcohol takes all the moisture away ! BS !!!

    • @kate5911
      @kate5911 7 лет назад +40

      MilowMango Not all alcohols are drying. Some are waxy and conditioning ;) it just depends on the other molecules bonded with the alcohol

    Didn't even occur to me that I could use hair care products that were geared towards men. Guess it could be the heavy male cologne scent that would also deter me from buying them.

    • @sandersongirl9069
      @sandersongirl9069 6 лет назад

      That’s cool for hair products but not for skincare. Genderneautral branded stuff are fine but specific ones aren’t as men have different cologene patterns to female skin, google image it for proof Xx

      @kristin Munson maybe but I wear men's fragrance. Always have, so that doesn't work for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one and there are probably men who love fruity scents and therefore use women's products. ✌🏻

    • @mydogsioux
      @mydogsioux 7 лет назад +33

      Kristin men's products contain scents as well. Also, men's razors are cheaper. That is just one example of how the the personal care industry cheats women.

    • @barbiecandycum6285
      @barbiecandycum6285 7 лет назад +20

      @mydogsious womens razors are more expensive because they tend to have added skincare stuff in them cause women have more sensitive skin. Same with hair products, womens products tend to have fancier stuff added in them but u can absolutely find products that are the same price as mens.. just there tends to be alot more brands that market towards women cause women tend to care about their hair more and buy more hair products than men. You've nothing to complain about.

  • @TheMetafora1
    @TheMetafora1 7 лет назад +167

    No...you shouldn't apply conditioner before shampoo. Would you apply moisturizing cream on your face befor removing your makeup or washing your face...??

    • @ikulata3408

      your hair doesnt have pores. your hair does not get pimples and doesn't age.

    • @TheMetafora1
      @TheMetafora1 7 лет назад +54

      ikulata it does have some kind of pores, the conditioner has to penetrate the cuticle to nourish the hair. It's also about the ph of the product and usually the shampoo and conditioner have different ph and they are ment to be used in a certain way to maintain the ph balance for healthy hair

    • @shayWILLeatYOU
      @shayWILLeatYOU 7 лет назад +44

      And hair does age lol

    • @jennamarsey3247
      @jennamarsey3247 7 лет назад +31

      ikulata your hair has cuticles that open and close like pores that react the same way our skin does in reaction to cold and warm water. You can open the cuticle with warm water and close it with cold water just like your pores..licensed cosmetologist here. This was the only point that I didn't agree on in this video because you really want to lock in that moisture/conditioner with that cold water in the end to have a longer lasting clean style. :)

    • @jennamarsey3247
      @jennamarsey3247 7 лет назад +12

      m1nt3a point still stands. Warm water unclogs the pores and gives you the chance to clean them well. Cold water can be used to shrink them. They never will 100%close they're pores. Sorry for the confusion.

    I'm a licensed hairstylist, and I actually agree with all of your myth busters; however, I think you should amend your title to "Retail Hair Industry Lies". It is the retail hair industry that propagates these misgivings, rather than hairstylists. We consider ourselves to be apart of the hair industry, and many of us do not represent product companies.

  • @gabbyjohnson7493

    When I went blonde last winter, my hairstylist wouldn't do it. She was like, "oh no, you don't want to go light this time of the year." She did the highlights for me, but she did not nearly go as light as I wanted. I no longer go to her. Obviously lol.

    There actually is a difference between men/women skin/hair... Because of different hormones and different levels between those hormones there is a difference in the ph between men and women's skin. Men's skin tends to be thicker as well so when you are getting into the higher end products, they are catering to the differences that men's skin and women's skin need!

    I love this Niki! It's absolutely amazing how much consumers are influenced by marketing, often without even knowing it. This is in all industries, especially food and beauty/personal care. Thank you for debunking these lies! I also love that you address that toxins can and will enter your bloodstream through our skin. So many people don't think about this and the damage it does to our health. It can be devastating over time, and when it's too late, it just is. There is no going back and our health is the most valuable thing we have and we should protect it at all costs. Love you!

    Thanks for clarifying "organic". The chemical requirement for organic status is having a carbon atom. Everything in nature including ourselves have carbon atoms (kinda required for life); thus, unless it's a synthetic material that was man made, it's organic. Technically, McDonald's is organic!

    My hair is extremely dry and low porosity (meaning products and moisture don't absorb easily into my hair.). I always used to shampoo before conditioning thinking that shampooing after conditioning would make my hair even more dry. It's actually more beneficial to my hair to deep condition it and then shampoo and rinse with cold water. My hair feels more soft and moisturizer that way and it doesn't have a gross filmy layer from the conditioner.

  • @simons8197
    @simons8197 7 лет назад

    from a professional point of view, most points are correct but with some notes. Mens skin is different to women's skin as it's 25% thicker. Some men hair care products like scalp stimulating solutions cater to just that. Regarding the conditioner before shampoo, I have actually studied this scenario and it doesnt work to the better as shampoo is designed to remove dirt and slightly open the cuticle and conditioner is meant to penetrate with nutrients and seal it.

    I think (in general for grooming products) the products labeled for men or for women can be confusing too, because sometimes the men's stuff they'll call it something else to make it sound more 'manly' I suppose, so it makes you think it's an entirely different thing. Like for example, I have a friend who's an estitician (sp?), & when I asked her if she gets any men coming in for facials, she said yes she does, but they call it something else (I forget the term). Even though it's the exact same thing.

    Companies will use the word "organics" in the title of their product or the name of their product line in order to APPEAR to have organic ingredients without having to pay for organic ingredients. Always read labels! If you want organic make sure it has the organic label item and read the ingredients to make sure they all say "organic xyz"

    I went to bath and body works with my guy friend the other day, and we were talking about how men's cologne and all that is always so much more boring and smells like crap (a lot of the time) compared to women's. we also have a much bigger variety. guys want to smell good too! the men's cologne is always named dumb stuff like Ocean and Swift Sandalwood lol but no one really likes how they smell. he actually bought three of the same kind of women's lotion because it smells so good. I like how you mentioned how there shouldn't be men/women's products.

    Genetics also. Me and my siblings all very thick hair very fast. And some people struggle to get their hair past their shoulders.

    Off topic: I recently received my Fancy Hair extensions YEY! But apparently I have a small head. The largest weft is too large for me. Is there a way I can cut it without dameging it? Can you give me a tip? Thanks! xoxo

    Remember people "organic" does not necessarily equal healthy. After all arsenic, cyanide and anthrax are all organic.

    Wouldn't the rest of your hair be dirty if you don't shampoo it and only use conditioner on it and just use shampoo on your scalp? Just curious. Great video and channel by the way.

      Keren Carrillo
      Honestly, you cannot completely prevent split ends from happening. The best thing I recommend to my clients (I'm a hairstylist) is to have your hair trimmed regularly. Four to six weeks to just take maybe a half inch or even a quarter inch off will help to keep them from doing a lot of long term damage. That way you're not going in for a trim after a year and the stylist is telling you that you should cut 5 inches off to get rid of the split ends. Side note: if a stylist tells you that, you are under NO obligation to let them cut that much. Something I tell my clients is that I will suggest how much length to cut and if they say not that much or not at all, I'll put the shears down.
      Something else to help stretch time out between trims is to use a thermal protectant whenever you curl or flatiron your hair. When using a heat tool, you'd be surprised that you don't need as much heat as is available. If you're able to turn down the heat while also using a heat protectant, you'll have great results with less damage.

    Wet your hair with cold water before shampooing. Doesn't strip all the natural oils out of your hair. Then condition. 😊

    I can’t agree with shampooing and conditioning at the same time, she says it works for her so... ok!!! But the shampoo would wash out over the mask removing some of it and reducing the effectiveness of her mask, so makes no sense to me
