As a guy who went back to MTB because of your interaction with Alex, and discovered Seth, Bryan and the other because of that, I can't wait for that to happen !!
Top video. Question, in the comments you have listed the stain as General Finishes waterbased dye, but in the video at 4:55 I see the Speedball India Ink bottle. Which one did you actually use for the black stain? Thx.
With so many other popular woodworking RUclipsrs getting burnt out, or doing non woodworking, its refreshing to see something completely new. I've never even heard of a cerused finish before. +1 for keeping us intrigued.
love the end result and the contrast of the grain with the black. beautiful! i have a table that is very similar to this made by a local woodshop in Seattle. well done!
If you heat the steel first with a torch before you spray the black until you no longer see the moisture dissipate with the heat then spray it and you will get a clean powder coat look especially if you use enamel paint... amazing job I love that finish
I saw a bottle of India Ink on your table while you were applying the finish. But the link for the finish you put in the description is different. Curious which finish you actually used? I just used India Ink on oak for a small project and the results were “okay.” Looking to expand to a bigger project and seeking that “oh so perfect” black finish. Love your work, both projects and vids. Keep them coming!
I highly recommend Permalac Protective Clear Coating. Comes in a lacquer rattle can (recommend the Satin finish) that will up the protection on your black paint! Its not powder coat quality but for the $ it's an affordable, durable, and fast drying alternative to protecting your metal finish
Awesome project! For your spray paint finishes in the future where you don't want to go all the way to powdercoating, I HIGHLY recommend Montana Gold spray paints. They go on super smooth (warm the cans for best surface finish) and the paint itself is incredibly durable.
Hah, thanks! Took me a few years to build up to this point but I love my shop in its current state. Super efficient and easy to make things just how I see them in my head.
I picked up a big chamfer bit like that only to find it wouldn't fit through the hole in my router base...which made me nervous so I didn't use it. I could have made a new acrylic base with a larger hole, maybe one day I'll try it. Great looking table, and love the finish. I imagine Rubio precolor in black probably would have the same effect perhaps.
Does the General Finishes stain provide enough protection even with the mono-coat topcoat (which basically just fills the grain)? I think you would (should) have used the Rubio Mono-coat stain, as well, or risk not having sufficient protection and needing some sort of poly protection added after curing. Sweet looking table!!!
I have bought the supplies and materials and am going to attempt to build this for our family. I do have a question on the Chamfer Edge. Did you use the 60 degree bit for both sides, or different angels? You reference another video where you did this, but I haven’t been able to find that. Appreciate any advise and thanks for the work you put into this channel. I am a new subscriber!
They are such a great tool to have. I honestly can't imagine woodworking without one, especially if you use rough lumber. You can get a used 8" jointer for less than $600, well worth it for the time you'll save and nicer finished pieces you'll end up with.
@@craftedworkshop Yeah, I was looking them up after watching your video. I look them up often, but I was inspired again. Finally found some good 8" ones for some good prices. Definitely not going cheap though. Luckily, being in NC, there are a ton of tools locally for sale haha.
wow y mas wow... no se si sepas español pero con este trabajo me acabas de enamorar, te quedo hermosísimo... desde ahora... fiel seguidora... saludos desde Mexico
Johnny that table looked excellent. Did you even consider perhaps turning a single pedestal for this table? Where did "Cerused" come from? God Bless my friend.
This looks fantastic! I do have a question- I've seen people use white wax on oak to get a similar filled-in grain look like the one you got here. Is it a viable cheaper alternative to the expensive second finish you used?
For sure, the wax you're talking about is called liming wax and is definitely the more traditional option. That said, I think Rubio would be more durable for a dining table.
Nice work! Maybe a tip for a next steel frame.. drill the holes before you weld everything togheter. so the trash from the drilling can fall out the tube. it’s only a little thing, but for some people it can be annoying to hear the steal trash inside of the frame when you lift the table.
what is the meaning of jointing faces? I might be ignorant because i haven't worked with any other wood than maple, but is it not better or the same to joint an edge, then plane one face? that will still give you one nice edge and face, then you can measure, mark, and process your material off of those?
For a much better spray paint finish use graffiti spray paint. The most popular one is Montana and it works MUCH better than anything you can get at Lowe’s. Plus it comes in a huge variety of great colors
Try sanding the primer before adding the base coat. That will smooth it out and make it more durable too. You will probably need 2-3 coats of primer to do this without sanding through but it will make your base coat look much more consistent.
Well Johnny, this is just pure awesomeness :D Really enjoy your videos, and like the new ideas you come up with, time to time. Great inspiration, keep up the good work :))
That finish is perfect
Thank you!
That first round with the router in a circle was so satisfying! Looks great dude.
Always so satisfying, hah! Thanks man. When you coming to Asheville with the van so we can build something for it?
As a guy who went back to MTB because of your interaction with Alex, and discovered Seth, Bryan and the other because of that, I can't wait for that to happen !!
the short animation among the video is so helpful and creative, like it
Thanks!
Really liking the finish on the top. It's quite striking. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Seth!
That finish was an excellent choice. It looks awesome.

The finish on this is magical
Really nice design.
Once again I don’t understand how 71 people give a thumbs down. This is great work and a great step by step video. Please keep it up.
Awesome stuff... yes powdercoat is the way to go.
BUt when on a budget i got some very good results with spraymax 2k praycans.
Extremely sensual finish.
The most sensual. 😘

Thanks! I try to keep things interesting for myself too, gets boring building the same stuff all the time.

I loved how it turned out. Will definitely use that contrasting technique soon
Thanks!
The Rubio turned out really well! Looks great👍👍
I've never heard the word "cerused" before. I like the look of the two different types of finishes. Great looking table, Johnny!
Thanks Bruce! I think I first heard about it from Tamar at 3x3.
I had never heard of it before
Looks dope! Really digging the base.

Cool, I've tried them once or twice but I'll try them again. Do you add a primer or just go right onto the steel?
Turned out great
Major shop/tool envy! I like how you work!

Yuuuuup
Beautiful project, very nicely done.
Thanks Raynola!
Could you perhaps achieve a similar results from a rubbing in a white paint primer if you first seal the black?
That table looks awesome!!
Really nice finish of the ttop.
Thanks!
this is one of my Favorites!!! love the combination of the finish and the base!!!
Thanks mama!
Awesome project Johnny!!! You should look into fireball tools welding squares.
Thanks Braden! Yes, I have a few of their squares but they didn't work with these angles. They are awesome though!
Beautiful
Absolutely Beautiful Brother!

wow, the effect is really nice! It gives me the idea to lead the mass of the hammer of Thor that I built. 👌
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Did you use poly or something to finish it or just leave like that
PROFESSIONAL!

beautiful finish on the table, congrats
Wow, great work!
I was looking for oak finishing method. This is exactly what I want.
Would you mind to share the finishing materials?
They’re in the video description.
Really well executed. I like your way of working, it's really clean. I will try to get some time to check out more of your content. Keep going !!

Thanks Dan!
Is this product protect the wood from water stains or spills when using on a dining room table?
Looks good, and I picked up a few tips from ya.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!
Did you ever put a poly finish or something like that as a way to waterproof the tabletop?
I hope to watch next video clip soon ~~:)
I'll have another project video in a week or two!
Love it !
You didn’t apply sealer for the table top?????? But overall it looks amazing
Hello, great videos but I have a question what router do you use in your woodpecker router lift? Thanks again for the great videos.
That's a gorgeous table ! I love the finish !
Hey Johnny, could you explain your dust collection for your festool kapex?
That finish is just awesome! Great work as always
Thanks a lot!

Have you ever had a problem / is there a problem with wood movement (splitting) regarding the thread tap and bolt method of securing table?
Might be a random question, but what boots are you wearing in this video?
