    After watching your videos I've recently picked up singing while camping. My wife and I just did a few multi-day trips on the AT and she asked, "What the heck are you doing?"
    "I'm singing. Like Shug! He's hilarious!"
    "He sure thinks he is", she responded flatly.
    While she may not be impressed, I am. Keep up the good work.

    I have a potentially stupid question... with the Marlin Spike and toggle you could hook your continuous loop from your hammock right on the knot (not the toggle!), no? Why bother with the whoopee sling then, and not just use webbing long enough for your hanging needs? Thanks for the videos Shug! They've helped out this noobie quite a bit.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  Год назад +2

      I just did that and di it when I have a short hang. On my foot end. See it in this video at 7:13 in......ruclips.net/video/nWFgHNwnG-M/видео.html

      All you have to do is reach down and get a stick and put it through the loop. Since the whoopee sling hangs on the knot and not on the toggle a stick will do just fine. And you don't have to pack it in with yo.

    Good timing i am just sorting it out for myself this morning for my first hang.
    I think i am going to try a carabina as the toggle into a marlin spike hitch. Then slippery hitch after the MSH to be sure not to slip. I am using a knotted webbing like (think atlas strap) from my hammock so then just clip into the biner then adjustment and clip on is easy.
    If it doesnt work i an just use the biner in the end of the webbing straps :)

    Shug, I'm swapping my ENO continuous loop and biner with a whoopie sling. My plan is to lark's head the fixed loop end of the whoopie sling through the ENO channel (passing through channel twice), as shown in various youtube videos. My question: if I use the marlin spike hitch with a toggle on the adjustable end of the whoopie sling, what should I use for a water break?
    I don't want to use a shoelace, but I also don't want to get wet. Should I skip the MSH and toggle in this scenario and instead use a Dutch biner to connect the whoopie sling to the tree strap, where the Dutch biner would also serve as my water break? Or is there a more elegant solution for a water break for those of us who like to hack our ENO hammocks with a whoopie sling?

    • @BobPreis
      @BobPreis 6 лет назад

      Maybe the answer lies here?
      www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php/9420-Drip-Rings-and-Marlinspike-Hitch
      "we hook the suspension loop underneath the hitch and toogle. This pushes the hitch and the toogle underneath the webbing and the suspension line and forms a drip spout for the water to run down and drip off"
      In practice, does this work? I don't have the equipment yet to try this out with a cup of water.

    Shugmery when you do the hammock camping in coldest period of winter there is always a missing segment that we never see. You share with us your breakfast in the hammock and everything else. However we have never actualy seen you actually get out of the hammock at -37 degree. I have questions? Does a grown man cry when gets out of his warm hammock? Do sleep in the same close you wore all day? Does the moisture clothing work that well to allow you not to change? How do you slip in to your boots when it is that cold. I find your cold weather adventure fascinating and fun to watch. Could you consider addressing this in your future video?

      I stretch and grin and move quickly upon hammock egress.I sleep in dedicated clothing that is dry. No...I always change as a sweat hiking in. If in camp for two days then I just strip some off before crawling in the hammock. Less is best for sleeping. Boots...I open them up wide as they will freeze up. Mukluks stay for supple. I film as much as I can for a one man op.

    Why can't the loop be on the toggle if the toggle is strong and the knot is tight? I think this knot was originally a rope worker's knot used to put a spike in a line so you could have a handle to pull hard on the line. (Animated knots shows it being used to make a ladder from two ropes and a bunch of dowels, so you actually stand on the "spikes".)
    I try to put the loop on the knot mostly because I just use any old stick I find on the ground that doesn't look too rotten.

      @clockguy2 10 лет назад

      I would imagine that the strap is so slick that a pull on the toggle would be enough to make it slip. Rope would probably hold in the same instance.

      @coast2coast00 10 лет назад

      I think it's mostly because the toggles made for this purpose are made to be as lightweight as possible, so having the weight further out may cause it to fold in on itself. It would also be more slippery than on the knot(which would keep the knot tight), not sure if that would have any real world effect though.

    Hej Shug
    .... could not write under your giveaway, so I write here. ;)
    I'll just say it's great idea to give you some of your equipment away ..... since you almost become a cult person here in europe ;)
    .... love seeing your uploads, your trips and your positive and humorous approach to the hammock outdoor life. Thanks ;)
    After many years of tent nights in nature, I am now beginning to explore hammock opportunities.

    ...... yesterday I ordered a Revelation Pro top quilt (Enlightened Equipment). I am going to pay taxes / fees ect but hope it can keep me warm through a cold Danish winter.
    I want to say thank you and tell you that you have many followers in Denmark as well
    Hope the above makes sense in English .... writes this in Danish
    May you and your family have a continued pleasant week
    Med Venlig Hilsen

    I am in NO way an expert.... but the way that I configured my tree straps is with a 'toggle' fitted through the end of it (with a knot so it doesn't fall off) so the end of my tree strap doesn't lay on the ground... kind of a "all in one" thing..... its exactly the same thing, only different.... lol

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  10 лет назад

      Michael Vassily I think I can picture that......how long is your strap to lay on the ground?))

    • @michaelvassily4707
      @michaelvassily4707 10 лет назад

      um... Long! the straps' previous life was holding my kayak to the top of a car... the toggle is just a piece of cpvc - works great and keeps everything together, I tend to loose things lol - I will be putting it (my new self made whoopie slings and $tore bought under quilt) to use this weekend in Greensboro "wooo buddy, its going to be cold" but am prepared! and YES, I will be saying "on the knot, NOT the toggle" all weekend - thank you for making us all laugh

    Q here... : why always webbing and never cord for tha tree ?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 года назад +1

      The tree likes the webbing better. Here in the USA many places will allow hammocking if using webbing and not cord. I think it looks better for our image.

    ***** Since I'm not a fan of the Marlin Spike I came up with my own solution. You may have seen it on the www.Hammockforums.net The Line Locker! Being a rock climber I don't like bunching up my webbing. You loose tensile strength doing that. The Line Locker is used in climbing and an off shoot sport Slacklining. My Line Locker is attached to my whoopiesling, (acting as a stopper so I can't pull out the loop). It is made of two links of chain welded at 90° of one another. Let me know what you think.

      Tried it out last weekend at our Fellowship of the Woods Rendezvous. Fantastic results. No more fiddle farting around with atlas straps for me. Got some 1.5 inch straps from AHE and cut an old crossbow bolt for the toggles. Now I need to find the right type of nylon to make my own 11 foot hammock that will hold my fat ass. the ENO Doublenest just isn't long enough for my total comfort.
