In Ghanaian tradition, funeral donations are made to help the bereaved family defray the cost of organizing the funeral. Donations are announced in public for accountability and also as a matter of 'public record' that you helped so that the bereaved will also donate a similar amount to you when you are also breaved. Additionally, some donations are also given secretly to the bereaved, by friends and colleagues at work sometimes: away from the extended family and the public to help them deal with their loss.

Just to clear the air on public declaration of funeral donations. As far as I know this practice resonates with Akan people. The other tribes like Ga-Adangmes, Ewes and what not don't make public declaration of funeral contributions. So it is not a "tradition" in it simplistic term. It is a "tradition" of the Akan people for most part.
      I hope this helps.
      Regards
      Gabby.

I got my first job in Uk through a Nigerian. In Russian as student it was Nigerians who actually welcomed me as first year medical student. They just incredible people. Funeral donations in ghana are as old as the republic itself. It is a voluntary way that the community pulls together to bury their dead to lessen the financial burden on the bereaved family. I don’t believe it’s any different from the western Go Fundme fund raiser that l see daily with funeral announcements here in the ‘west “.

The essence of the donations at funerals is to support the bereaved family give a befitting burial to their love one who is dead. Funerals in Ghana can be expensive indeed. Funeral celebrations are seem as a celebration of life in the Ghananian culture- a way of saying a final goodbye to a beloved one.

@23:16 answer to your question. Funerals are very expensive and rarely people prepare for the cost side of conducting a funeral and burying a loved one. Ghanaians love to burden share the cost of organizing and hosting a funeral. Yes, they also want to be opened and transparent when monies are being donated towards funeral expenses, hence, the open declaration or announcement of who donated how much, so that we hold everyone honest and accountable. Some people may still choose to give to a bereaved family member secretly, if they don’t want to make a scene of it. This happens when they only know that family member and he or she is the only reason they came to the funeral and don’t know anybody else.

The Quality in the Coke or beverages in Ghana compared to Naija is GH has the best quality in taste. The Naija one has a lesser quality cos of the population to it can't richer than that of GH. That's why it's expensive

Its about time we stop talking about my country, Ghana and Nigeria as different countries. Before 1884 there were no different African countries, we roamed free on our tribal ancestral lands. We did not divide our ourselves into countries, the Europeans did. So please refer to ourselves by our tribal ancestral lands and not the dividing borders created by our colonisers. We need stand proud of who we are and our tribal identities, without allowing any divisions by the Europeans. So yo can say, I went from my Ogun land to the land of my Fanti brothers and sisters, Ashanti, Eweh and to the Ga people and so on.

Announcing feneral donations never happens in the big cities, they have a table on one corner while people will do donations and get a receipt.I believed some small cities maybe announce donations which is not right, but Ghana seriously celebrate the dead
