I'm very much in the camp of not everything needs to be multiplayer. When i play a videogame I want to turn my brain off and escape from it all. Plus there is always those that want to ruin your game. Always. So I think it was a bold move to keep in single player. But also means they focused on making the game fun instead of getting a feature checkmark. If they decide to do DLC down the road that is co--op I'd be welcome to the idea. But none of that mmo stuff.

The _Seamless Co-op Mod_ for Elden Ring proves how a great way to add multiplayer could work. The *host* decides if others are allowed to join them or even if PVP is on. When someone fast travels to a lost grace a vote is taken and timeouts if it fails to pass.

What you say between 00:35 and 01:10 is the reason I no longer play MMO's or multiplayer. That and the fact I'm getting older, I have other priorities and MMO's most of the time "requires" you to be online for at least a couple of hours every day to do all the dailys and similar events that usually comes with MMO games.

Plus there's "special" events with "limited time rewards" half the damned year in some games. Some foolishly try to force players into activities they don't and will never enjoy. And any MMO patch can turn a game you enjoy into one you hate, with all your time, effort and money wasted. Single-player games are not only free of those problems, but on PC mods can allow you to tweak the game to your absolute personal perfection.

@@torzae9234 I actually agree with this. Singleplayer is great because it removes the lag, but it doesn't fit with this game. I'm not saying it should be just Multiplayer, have it be both. Triwizard Tournament events, Quidditch matches, you get sorted into the houses based on how you answer a few questions, you start off as a first year and work your way up with XP, duels against other classmates, you have to go to each class and answer questions, dungeons that gain you XP, you can get sent to detention, you can go to Hogsmeade, you have to do good in classes to earn points for each house in order to win the House Cup, you have to get to each class on time but have an option to do other things, you go to dinner and chat with other players. Honestly singleplayer vs MMO aside, I'd more so appreciate just a co-op experience.
In my opinion you can never go wrong with the option of co-op; if it's not forced. All the pros to singleplayer are still there, simply don't utilize co-op functionality. Meanwhile the benefits of playing with friends are now open. The downsides of co-op are usually subjective to the person; and their friend group, I.E: Your friends aren't being as immersive as you'd like them to be. But this is apparent in any genre of game and more so a thing of picking the right friends to play with. The only real objective downside I could think of with co-op is if the game design is not meant to be played with others; though I haven't played the game I would think that creating a setting revolving around a school, with fellow classmates; it's a hard task to claim it wouldn't be beneficial unless there is a point where you are just up and gone and they've made a story decision as to why you would be alone. At the end of the day though I hope the game does well, curious to see what comes of it.

I’m happy that Hogwarts Legacy is a single player experience because I get the full immersion and story experience without being pulled out of that immersion due to the actions of others.
That being said I see another missed opportunity of not having a way to opt in or out of the multiplayer experience with a system similar to Elden Ring or having a shared social space like the common rooms or the grand hall. Like being able to play Wizards Chess in either of these spaces. I can see them adding these spaces as Social Spaces in the future or adding an MMO update/server in the future like how they did with Grand Theft Auto Online. Where people can play with others, and roleplay etc. That’s how I see Hogwarts Legacy becoming an MMO without having to overhaul the entire game. Or DLC for Quidditch.
I didn’t even think about the TriWizard Tournament. That would be so cool on a multiplayer scale. I can also the potential to add other Wizarding Schools of other countries or expanding the world for when our characters become adults and have the options of either becoming an Auror or something. There are plenty of things to do for a sequel of this game.
Triwiz tournament can allow the devs to add outside areas that can be explored completely anew.
the second movie showed us the catacombs under the castle which can be explored.
its also a magical castle which allows for it to change in various amount. I like the idea that the whole castle works based on the room of requirements mechanic and so the spaces change based on the users needs.
We can add the ministry of magic as a whole new area as well.
But i think the most impirtant part of hogwarts is the stories being told here.
there is room for a few different mistery stories that can use the castle setting as a tool for telling.
That is the advantage of having 0 rules for how your world works...you can play with the world just enough to create new content.
i do agree that quidditch, wizards chess, and tri wiz tournament can be dlcs that allow us to play online.
How awesome would it be if chess players played esports chess through hogwarts, the vid game...

I am so glad that this game isn’t an mmo. I think you might be underestimating the potential of a single game and possible sequels to the game.
The whole concept of Harry Potter has been returning to Hogwarts. To see the larger narrative of Harry’s story unfold. Hogwarts Legacy has the potential to give that same experience. A large high quality narrative expanding multiple games. Games like Mass Effect have been very successful, doing exactly this.
Also my issue with mmos is the fact that the gameplay loop will inherently be repetitive. It’s practically in the nature of mmos to be developed in such a way. And a weakness to the mmo model. Because developers are trying to create content, as efficiently possible.
It being a single player game, it let’s the developers create a higher quality gameplay experience.

Adding multiplayer means the game itself would most likely suffer in terms of quality or content. Its really hard (if not impossible) to do everything in every area perfectly when making a game, so dropping multiplayer to focus solely on the single player experience probably allowed the developers to excel at that experience

I cannot think of a single argument that could be made against allowing a small co-op experience. I love RPGs, and enjoy many of the majorly popular single-player experiences, but I can't think of one of them that I wouldn't have enjoyed even more if I was allowed to play, or at least re-play, side-by-side with my spouse and/or friend group. Sure, design it towards being a single-player experience, just give the ~option~ of co-op. Nobody is forcing anyone to play multiplayer, and I'm not suggesting the game be balanced with multiplayer in mind to the detriment of the single-player experience. Just give us the ~choice~. Modders have spent ~years~ attempting to make some of the most famous and successful single-player RPGs in to multiplayer experiences. That kind of passion and dedication to such a massive undertaking doesn't manifest on a whim. There is a huge demographic of players that want to be able to enjoy their favorite games with their friends and significant others, and game developers need to start providing that experience consistently in their RPGs, the types of games that, in my opinion, afford the greatest levels of enjoyment and the longest lengths of play time.
Edit: I've seen so many comments about other players ruining the experience, either the immersion or by griefing. I would like to reiterate the point I made about multiplayer being a ~choice~, and the game being balanced and designed towards a single-player experience, and reinforce that point with the reminder that my suggestion is based on the idea of a small, invite-based co-op experience amongst friends, ~not~ an MMO experience. The people you would be playing with would be of ~your~ choosing, griefing should not be a consideration. And as for arguments against this idea in the vein of one's immersion or experience being tainted by the presence of other players, again, co-op would be a ~choice~. Nobody is forcing this multiplayer experience upon you.
    TL;DR
All games, so long as it's mechanically viable, should offer a co-op experience. Nobody is forcing the players that don't want that to do it. Design the game towards a single-player experience, just allow co-op for the people who want it. Just because some prefer it to be single-player doesn't mean the choice should be taken from those who don't.

Great story, single-player narrative, that can be played with friends, with distinct storyline based on (say) your house choice. Then end game content can be things like Wizarding sports a la Quidditch, world bosses e.g hunting dragons or wizard artifacts, with daily quests like interesting dark wizard battles (perhaps harkoning to the Mordor games Nemesis) and school activities.

Glad this is a single player game. I play a lot of MMO's (4-6 on rotation) and don't see the need for it here. Mass Effect didn't need multiplayer and it is one of greatest game franchises ever. It did implement multiplayer, and some say it was good but I wouldn't know, but it was very successful without it. Also I am pretty sure sales of legendary edition proved it didn't need the multiplayer to be successful.
If this had been an MMO I doubt I would have pre-ordered it because as you mentioned thee would have been massive server queues, server bugs and other issues on launch, which has happened to pretty much every MMO on launch since the dawn of time.

I actually prefer that the game is not multiplayer and here's why: I have been playing MMO's for over 18 years now and every time there are other groups of people around there tends to be either griefing happening, toxicity, elitism and everything surrounding that. Does playing MMO's in a group doing dungeons/raiding get you a few good memories ? Sure, there is no denying that, but the reasons I stated is why I prefer single player experiences that actually have an ending.
I do play both Lost Ark and WoW actively and have made many amazing memories throughout the years, but the MMO's end up being grindfests or daily chores that put you into a routine. Singleplayer games don't do that and that's why I prefer them, because you can take it at your own pace.

It looks combat focused, so I'm going in expecting a fallout 4 style experience when I wanted something more CRPG. Also expecting a poor story with this convoluted 5th year entry setup. Also adding sidequests/references to quidditch and gobstones but removing the actual mini games from development is pretty heavy immersion breaking when they found the time to add in other minigames.
A lot of the castle environments seem to be well scaled till they hit the common rooms which are hitting Tardis levels of expansion.
