This is why I really like your channel. You take very good shots of all the parts trees and such so we can see whats in the kit clearly. You don't mess around either, you get right too it! I was looking at this kit as a potential buy, knew I could come here and see it. On order! Keep them coming!
I bought several of these models in a clearance sale. The one I built was molded in metallic blue. I also bought a full scale one used. It had a lot of mechanical problems and didn’t last long but it performed great. All I have left of it is the front seat.
@@psychopenguin3821 I bought it with about 100,000 on it and it was turbocharged so no carburetor but I did blow a head gasket and the radio went out and the rack and pinion steering and finally the transmission.
Had that kit when it first came out. I was working at a Dodge/Chrysler dealer back then as well. Ah memories.... Actually owned it's sister, the 1980 Dodge OMNI 024. Great job on the build!
You were asking about the Plymouth version - they were called Dusters. I owned an '85 Duster Turismo (non-turbo, manual) that looked an aweful lot like the kit body without all the frills of the Shelby. This kit stirs up memories - I may have to go pick one up
I'm glad Chris that you pointed out how nicely detailed this kit is. MPC did indeed produce great kits. Far too many jump on the bash bandwagon based on negative opinions of others. I say build what you like, not what others tell you is a good kit. BTW, Monogram also produced a Shelby Charger kit. 1/24
Well done Chris! I'll definitely be grabbing one when they're available! I've built two of Revell's 1/25 1988 and 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix SE kits with the front wheel drive. This would definitely be my second build!
The Plymouth version was called the Horizon TC3 then transitioned to the Turismo name. I had an '84 Plymouth Turismo when I was in high school. It had the 2.2 high output and a 5 speed. It was red with burgundy velour interior. I had alot of fun with it but it wasn't very reliable.
My wife's first new car was a 87 Shelby Charger, Shelby American in Las Vegas has one in the shop museum so they are real Shelby's. The gas cap was body coloured, I lost ours and the dealer replacements were black. A friend in a body shop repainted the cap blue for me.
These are great kits, I have several original run kits. All turbo cars had a buldge hood , only 83 was non turbo , flat food and 4 lug. Turbos were 5 lug. Be nice it ot came with parts to build either way. The are awsome cars. I owned 3 😊
The Omni is one of the most comfortable car I ever sat in. Those seats were just so plush! Quick search tells me that the Plymouth version was called the Turismo. Funny how we all felt those cars were ugly back in the days, but that today, we like them.
The Turismo was the Plymouth version of the Dodge Charger, The Omni was the Plymouth version of the Dodge Shadow. Fun, but disposable cars......I called them the Bic lighters of the automotive world. 🤣
I have discovered acrylic paint pens. It makes detailing so much easier and there isnt any clean up. They're anywhere from $9 to $25, depending on the set. I got a basic 10 color set for $9,
You don't glue the wheels ? I always have to glue them. Looks like a nice kit anyway. I'm actually doing the 1988 dodge daytona 3 in 1 kit that they did in 2005. This is a neat kit. I'll have to pick the shelby kit up. Thanks 👍
I can’t wait for this kit to come out. I’m wanting to do one similar to the box, but I’m also wanting to some how convert it to the base model Charger, that has the flat hood and four headlights. Anyone have any ideas on how I could do that?
Worked in the Chrysler Dodge Dealership when these cars came out never saw any with blue stripping or just a blue, they were all Shelby blue and silver the engines were all black with aluminum heads and aluminum transmissions some engines came with chrome valve covers and timing covers my brother bought one of the first ones that was delivered to the dealership it was a pocket rocket. I owned the Shellby omni with the turbo it was a torque steering sob.
I'm with you on the 2 door 4 door thing - muscle cars have 2 doors if your talking about rally cars 4 doors give easier access to the interior and any way better to wreck a 4 door remember that Chrysler had to sell the new Chargers cheap to police at first anyway this looks like a nice kit - great build thank you
I had three of these cars. I would have loved to have had the Shelby but when I investigated how much the insurance was, that idea was quickly squashed. My first was a Dodge O24 in the colour Blue you used. It had the 1.8 VW motor which was kind of weak. To make it look a bit more sporty, I set up my own stripe design for it. I masked the body and painted it up - it actually looked pretty good. My second was the Dodge Charger 2.2 which was a pretty quick car for a four banger. You compared it to a Chevy Chevette and Cavalier. This car as a 2.2 blew them away - I got over 250,000 miles on it till one snowy night killed it. My last was a Plymouth Turisimo - not such a great car. It was a used car and turned out to be a money pit. The big seller for me was it’s cargo capacity. With the back seat down you could camp in it. You could put a 4x8 piece of plywood in it and close the rear hatch..
My buddy had one of those and man! That car was fun, dump the clutch set the E-brake and it would smoke the tires to the rim!!! 😂😂😂 And surprisingly fast… good times, he’s past now but thanks for the memory trip… lol
AMT kitted the sister car, the Plymouth Horizon TC3 in 1/25. So there are 3 different kits of these Chrysler twins the Dodge Omni 024/Horizon TC3 coupes.
Chris: the Plymouth FWD version of the Dodge Charger and the Dodge ONMI GLH ("Goes Like Hell"), was the Plymouth Horizon. It didn't have any engine options to produce high performance. Plymouth Division management seemed to emphasize economy toward younger families ( my brother traded in a 1970 318 Duster on a Plymouth Horizon that stranded his family 200 miles from home when he ran over a large rock that bent his oil pan. I had to rescue the four of them in my 1971 Chrysler Newport ! Can't say I was smarter ; I traded that Newport for a Volare Wagon😩 ! )
I had one of these kits, it was molded in grey. I also had a 1987 black Plymouth Turismo, 2.2 liter and automatic transmission. Like the video and the kit. Keep up the great work. Have a nice day.
@@JimFlanagan4206 was the voltage regulator always frying the battery? I went through 3 batteries in 2 weeks before I found the problem, then 1 year later blew the head gasket and it went straight to the scrap-heap.
@@danielkemp4801 I don't remember that but it overheated alot and I broke the timing belt. Luckily it wasn't an interference engine. I think I only had it for about a year.
The gas cap on this car was black, not chrome. The steering wheel had a black grip and horn pad and the steering wheel spikes were a brushed aluminum. Turn signal stalk was black with a chrome knob on the end. Thats what I remember from the two 80s Chargers I owned. The engine wasn’t red. I think it was just a natural color. Maybe the block was painted Chrysler Corporate blue or even black. I looked at some pictures of 86 Charger engines to determine that. It was difficult to make out the block color.
Cool a new kit of my Shelby’s ,I would never build one of my vintage kits , I will have to get two one for the black and silver car and one for the red an silver car😊
I can picture this kit with a blown v8 sitting in the front with large pro street tires in the back all built on a tubular chassis. I must now own a hand full of these kits.
In the early years you had the Dodge Omni O24 and the Plymouth Horizion TC3. In the later years you had the Dodge Omni Charger and the Plymouth Turismo.
Yeah those Mitsubishi 4 bangers, Chrysler used the hell out of them, like GM used those Quad 4's , to me they were both boat anchors, you were lucky to get 70-75k miles out of either one of those. Believe me I've them both in something.
I think (I may be wrong) the Plymouth version was called the Horizon and the Dodge version was called the Omni and all the various versions were made off those two platforms but I could be wrong
The Plymouth version was called the Horizon. The only color combo's that I know of that the Shelby's came in were red/silver and blue/silver if I remember correctly. I had a red one that suffered terribly from torque steer because the engine was so strong. Fun to drive though.
Ooooh… a friend of mine had a Shelby Charger, and in those same colours. It was his daily driver, as well as being the regional race course pace car( which was broadly announced through lettering down the sides of the car)… that is, until the complaints started coming in fast and furious about the driving behaviour of the “AMP Pace Car” out on public roadways. He kept the car for a while longer, but it didn’t have the additional “go faster” decals.
think the Shelby versions of the Omni could be had either in blue with silver stripes or white with the blue stripes. pretty sure that was the only two combos for the Shelby version not to into Mopars of that era although my younger son talked me into a 90 Dodge Daytona for his high school ride was fully loaded with the turbo 4 cylinder and a 5 speed trans. ran like a "striped" ape when it ran was always a gear head who liked to work on my cars but this one liked to ruin me always having trouble keeping the half shafts in place and other problems related to a high school guys car on the road anyway I couldn't gripe at him because I remember thrashing my share of rides in my younger years great build by the way keep em coming
There was the Daytona during this Era with the flip up headlights. It was featured in the movie Wraith alongside that crazy awesome Dodge prototype M4S Car. I liked the Daytona more than the charger during this era
reversed paint scheme's were a thing in those days. my cousin had a silver with blue stripes shelby and i've seen the blue with silver striped ones around. build quality on those cars wasn't the greatest chrysler was still trying to recover so most of those cars from those days are rotted out and junk. nice build and my buddy had a 4 dr omni, brown in color it was his first car and he loved that thing, memories

They were ugly back then and they are now; front overhang looked ridiculous like pasted on for crash worthiness. The proportions were all wrong with tiny tucked in tires and wheels (the model is not accurate as a quick check on the web will show) What's next the Mitsubishi Challenger or 1978 Plymouth Sapporo? I'd like to say this is why Dodge will go out of business in a couple years (they have zero product to sell!!) but it was just one of many abuses of the names like the failed Viaggio was - aka Dart. So happy to see this car come back; it gives me a feeling of nostalgia the way the A60 Supra kit you built some time ago did.
Glad that kit came back out!!!! 🤜🤛
