I’m a civil engineer and work in the construction industry. It’s fascinating for me how you think your personality has changed working with men. I think it teaches you to be more direct in your communication vs being gentler if you’re used to only working with women. I never thought of it as being mean but I’m very thankful of how working with men has taught me to be direct and assert myself when leading projects

As we grow, through experience, or because we value ourselves differently, our styles change. It’s an interesting thing. But when we change, our style changes too….

It’s true, working with a predominantly male-based corporate team also turned me into a colder, stern person in order to be taken seriously!! Either way I’m glad I’ve learned how to stand up for myself and well done to you too for building the house of your dreams down to every detail!!!

Pre-COVID I had a hard time saying ‘no’ and also worried about inconveniencing/disappointing others. It always came at a huge personal cost to me (emotionally, physically and financially). The pandemic allowed me learn and set boundaries unapologetically. It’s truly been amazing seeing how much more energy and enjoyment I have day-to-day.
I don’t think it’s being cold, I think it’s learning to stand up for yourself!!
    👏👏👏 proud of your growth!👏👏👏

Strong yes- I’ve been building a house for TWO YEARS now and a year in I had a revelation. When I am nice, they take advantage of that. They use my kindness to cut corners, be sloppy, and not do things they way they know they should because they’re betting that I just won’t mention it for fear of conflict. I’ve absolutely changed, and now I basically just trust no one and if I’m paying you to do work for me, I’m suspicious of you.

I think it gets faster as you get ‘older’ fun fact.. we share the same birthday but 10 years apart!

Been diagnosed with sibo a couple weeks ago. My symptoms were really different than yours (mostly upper stomach) no appetite, nausea, feeling constantly that I have trapped air on my left side, burping a lot. Been taking antibiotics to eradicate it for a week now. Still have one week to go and then going the more natural route to make my gut strong again. This invisible disease is a pain in the ass, eating low formaps for months, no gluten…I hope you and I will be feeling good soon.

It's natural to change as we age. IMO, your 20s are for experimentation and starting to figure out who you are. Your 30s are for continuing on that path. You've packed a lot into the last couple of years, and you've come out stronger on the other side. It's good that you're learning to stand up for yourself. BTW I love the dress you're wearing in the video. (Getting the straps altered to your body shape is a pretty easy fix. Just make sure that the seam is sloped so it doesn't keep falling down.)

Your style is changing because your evolving particularly at this stage in your life and that's normal. When you get to be in your 60's like myself you will find that there will be another huge transition and it's what we all experience. Also, I have come to learn that if you need to be on antibiotic's for anything, you should take a probiotic to avoid the Thrush situation. It nips that in the bud!

Hey Amelia - you popped up on my FYP and thought I would come and watch a wee YT video before bed like the good old times. You’re so lovely and honestly feel like we could be besties everything you’ve kinda been talking about in this video I feel like I’ve really related to. You talk about topics like “depression weekends” and insecurities in such a genuine and truthful way. I know we all have those days and hate bits of ourself (hate too strong) but the way you just say it deffo made me feel less dramatic about my feelings that’s for sure. I could go on and on and ONNNN but not gonna because it’s a bit weird lmao.
You’re a lovely wee soul thank you xx
    Anyways I’m waffling

Omg Amelia, I went through that phase too. I worked in an office with all men, and much older people than me. I was the always the youngest (by a lot in the room) and I became a much more stronger masculine woman. Eventually I started dressing like it too, which sharper lines etc. but the girly side has now started to come out again, especially when motherhood seems close at hand!

You go, Amelia! Can relate - I had encountered perpetual male jockeying for position at work, on the part of men that frankly were less talented (I feel I can say this now that I'm in my 'don't give a crap 50s') than me. They were however much more skilled in engineering situations to maintain their hold on power. As that situation became more and more clear to me, I became more ruthless and less 'nice' in the face of such behaviour. And I LOVE the change. I am currently negotiating in a work scenario and I'm playing hardball. Sending you support and love, keep shining! 😘

So amazing to hear you talk about how your personality has changed through working with an all male team while doing your house. I’ve had the same experience, although mine has come as a band leader leading male bands. I’m not sure it’s necessarily just because they’re men (although some of it definitely is). I think it’s a lot to do with not having direct control over who you are working with (i.e. because you’ve not directly hired them). This means you inevitably end up with some people who can’t be relied upon, and who fall back to BS and excuse making. It does make you a lot tougher. I found the reactions to that toughness were the hardest things to deal with. Especially if you’re the only woman in a group full of men, and talking to man who falls back on a very light and insidious form of misogyny to make it look like you’re the problem. And that concludes my TED talk.

I would be interested to hear if you have any idea of the impact of the garment industry on the environment, and where “donated” clothes which one just decides no longer fit their style and personality end up. Yes, should of course be allowed to evolve and change and better ourselves but then we should also think about how much we consume. I feel like the luxury of being ignorant on these topics should not be granted to someone like you, with your education background, resources and free time available to research! Please, please think about how many pieces you will get for your “new you” wardrobe, and also their longevity and quality!

I have had some major hits to my happiness in life lately...loss of pets, family problems...then my nephew committed suicide. I just can't seem to move forward past the anger I feel. I feel such pain thinking about what he was going through (he had schizophrenia) how bad it must have been for him to take his own life. His loss has changed me, I am hard and angry yet cry all the time. I am hoping I can change back to myself and be the cheerful person I was. Soon...

Totally different situation, but I had an electonic device that needed servicing. After I got it back, it still wasn't working. Called the company again and don't remember if he actually asked but his attitude was like, 'have you plugged it in?' & even when he agreed to come by and see it, it was like, 'it'll probably be a waste of my time'. Sorry to be stern but Please own your success and work towards getting over this imposter syndrome. You have no one to please but yourself and self congratulating is not a form of arrogance as long as you are humble about it which you are. Having worked in an industry full of men and gotten over my imposter syndrome recently and owning my career success I have found I have become me again. It’s also inspiring to people because you are giving them permission to own it too unconsciously. We as women must start removing these inherited shame across all facets of our lives.

Well, I didn’t get to finish my thought - but working with men taught me to be more direct and assertive - I needed to give concise instructions and opinions, once I mastered that, things went along well and I grew to like the simplicity, and productivity of working that way. I was young and behaving that way, especially with men that were older and more experienced was challenging until I proved myself. Go Girl!

I love the new Amelia! I think the video title coupled with the thumbnail pic makes it sound like you’re upset about it or had some hate and there’s a negativity to it (didn’t get this vibe in the actual video) but honestly I think it’s been refreshing and an evolution or growth rather than a reaction to something bad if that makes sense?! Although if you could go back to florals as that ain’t my style my credit card would be a lot happier as I’m not as influenced 😅😂 . Seriously loving the blonde, the matt eye shadow and your new style and the house of course! 🔥
Would you ever consider doing a mini round up of your glucose monitor? I’d love to do it but the potential maintenance of it and living with it, even putting it in scares me so a bit more background on it would be truly helpful if you felt comfortable talking about what it’s like to live with? It DOES hurt a bit to put on… if you are scared of needles I would stay away. The needle is only visible and in your skin for a short second but it is rather large. I can no longer where them to monitor myself as I am allergic to the adhesive they use for the skin.
I don’t know much about using it for any other purpose than diabetes but if you have questions about the device itself I can help :)

I work in Construction and I was the same way (regarding working with all men), so now in real life I'm more communicative and straight forward as well.

Your nose looks good!! It looked good before too. You got a rhinoplasty because you wanted something fixed and that is fine. Whatever makes you happy even if people think it's unnecessary.

Curious about SIBO…I know you’ve said you eat rice, fruit, honey in tea and candy every day. Have you stopped eating those sugars and carbohydrates (which is also sugar) as well as the alcohol? Thanks for sharing!

Ok AM ✨💁🏾‍♀️✨ I totally understand your evolution.. I am an Architect by education but for my career advancement I moved to more construction based work and Yes many of my friends and family said my personality evolved. From a kinda soft fru fru designer to a more assertive person ✨💁🏾‍♀️✨. I still have my Fru Fru moments ✨👩🏾‍🦱✨ but I Love the me I am now
