- The vacant property problem in Baltimore is costing the city and taxpayers an estimated $200 million annually, according to a new report from Johns Hopkins University.
The report, published by the university’s 21st Century Cities Initiative, indicated the city is losing an estimated $100 million in tax revenue for the roughly 15,000 vacant properties that sprawl city limits. The city spends another $100 million in direct cost associate with the vacant properties specifically, according to the report.

I'm sick of hearing about rat infested, crime infested run down. Window wipers Baltimore. I can assure you that money given will not be used to refurbish those run down homes. That money is going to line a lot of pockets, and Baltimore will still be looking fucked up.
“Lost potential tax revenue on vacant homes” as a “cost to tax payers” seems extremely misleading to me.
Exactly
Tear down EVERYTHING and rebuild. Baltimore has been abused. What was once a beautiful city has turned into a pot hole. It’s about time that it’s put into someone’s hands that will actually take care of it. God Bless this city.
Abused by 70% of the population
Property owners are just waiting you out
hoping you will shoot each other
We ALL know who ruined Baltimore.
Right now! The whole world is in the devils hands. As predicted in the bible.

They are own by the city and the people from the city can't buy them, most of them home have lead and the 1 need more work then the price of the market price
Where do all the tax dollars go? There is zero evidence the $ is used for anything that benefits the citizens. Seems to me everything in Bmore is crumbling. Including the quality of life.
Government employees, bureaucrats and politicians
@@ICDeadPeeps DNC runs Baltimore
Why is it costing taxpayers?
Why would anyone fix the real estate for the current population? It is waist of time and money. The people who live in those neighborhoods don’t want change.
The focus should be on rebuilding families, that will raise their children to value education, themselves, and others.
I want to see numbers. How are these houses costing $200k per year?
Agreed this is a BS story
How? You are not touching these properties They are vacant because no honest person will set foot in this hole
Even if you gentrify you still allow homeless and gangs to roam the streets so why would anybody move there?
Lower taxes and reduce crime. What reason is there to live in the city? That’s why every 20 something moves away.
Baltimore is 70% 👨🏿 Mayor 👨🏿 DA 👨🏿 Police chief 👨🏿 So who could possibly be the cause of the failure of Baltimore ?
Marlo's bodies is in them houses😂
Shitttt they gonna have to call clay davis 😂😂
The city could have fixed these a long time ago. Partner with Habitat and vo tech students to rehab and rent out/sell.
Frost you're my hero
Even though they might sell for $1 nobody wants them because attached debt and city costs. Wave all that crap and people would actually buy them 🤷♂️

Get a few people in bulldozers
Relocate 70% of the population so honest people can move in
@@silentmajority8365 think youre just a racist bro. race isnt the issue, its the failed education system which makes the people that way. when kids perform terribly and have no chance at a decent job or college so they turn to crime, then it riddles the city, the city needs to start severely punishing the drug trade and revamping the education system.
Could we actually see a difference in taxes if they stop spending money on vacant properties it’s 101 problems needs to be fix to make a real difference
Many of those vacant homes cannot be rehabbed they need to be torn down. The city should just give these properties away for free to investors who will then rehab the properties or tear them down and build new structures. The problem is a lot of these properties have liens aka debt; unpaid property taxes and unpaid utility bills which adds to the acquisition costs and make it so that it’s not worth fixing up or even tearing down and building new homes. Just forgive the debt and sell the properties to investors who agree in writing to rehab the properties in exchange for reduced or no property taxes for a certain number of years. This will help make projects more financially attractive.
Baltimore City population has been declining for multiple consecutive years largely because of the crime and horrible education system. There's no point wasting government resources fixing up or renovating these homes when people are fleeing the city. Fix crime and the education system first, and everything else will follow.
@@tonytucker6145 Easy with the caps there buddy lol.
Where did in my comment say anything about spending more money on anything? There are ways to fix problems other than to throw endless amounts of money at it.

Exactly Nobody with a brain would invest in property there unless there was a huge demographics change
@@silentmajority8365 Yep, and don't forget the insanely high property tax to boot if you happen to live in a decent neighborhood. I wouldn't mind paying the high taxes if I felt like it was being spent wisely but nope...
To be honest the governor if each decade, made it worse the vacant property used for drug deals the crime, and who gets the blame African red lining all never helped.
Crack epidemic 😮
Hopkins want ls the city. These homes are kept out of the publics hands until it’s most profitable for some corporation
This is the real story of Baltimore right here they can make all the new buildings they want that's the city spending money all the political spending money on most of them owning those buildings for themselves making other people think I could get in on it too no cuz it's not going to be for the poor people it's going to be for people who have money and people who want to play the game and people who are not going to live there
Baltimore City charged too much money for every little thing over pricing the people in Baltimore high price water bill half price rent and your name some more people going to wind up leaving Baltimore we sitcom
That is where rodents breed esp over east
Give the homes away for free.
Revamp security.
Invest in education.
Exactly
But the President you Woke people elected has billions of dollars to give to Ukraine. Most black people take things personally. When are people going to realize that it is the bad character of one' demeanor that keeps neighborhoods dilapidated.
Tear them down.... oh that's right because old money holds the land rents and with no property there is nothing to write off ... just 1 thing I'm sure
Help people out there, 😩

I was an investor, buying and fixing properties in baltimore city. Don't let them fool you. Baltimore city council, zoning and inspectors makes it really hard for contractors, people or investors to make properties look good.
It almost looks like they do it on purpose to leave properties like that.
I pulled out of baltimore city along with 5 large investors because you just can't win shit.
Yeah they say it’s the real Gotham City. I also heard about that too. It’s almost as if the cartel is running that city.
