  • The vacant property problem in Baltimore is costing the city and taxpayers an estimated $200 million annually, according to a new report from Johns Hopkins University.
The report, published by the university’s 21st Century Cities Initiative, indicated the city is losing an estimated $100 million in tax revenue for the roughly 15,000 vacant properties that sprawl city limits. The city spends another $100 million in direct cost associate with the vacant properties specifically, according to the report.

I'm sick of hearing about rat infested, crime infested run down. Window wipers Baltimore. I can assure you that money given will not be used to refurbish those run down homes. That money is going to line a lot of pockets, and Baltimore will still be looking fucked up.

“Lost potential tax revenue on vacant homes” as a “cost to tax payers” seems extremely misleading to me.

Tear down EVERYTHING and rebuild. Baltimore has been abused. What was once a beautiful city has turned into a pot hole. It’s about time that it’s put into someone’s hands that will actually take care of it. God Bless this city.

Why would anyone fix the real estate for the current population? It is waist of time and money. The people who live in those neighborhoods don’t want change.
The focus should be on rebuilding families, that will raise their children to value education, themselves, and others.

@@silentmajority8365 think youre just a racist bro. race isnt the issue, its the failed education system which makes the people that way. when kids perform terribly and have no chance at a decent job or college so they turn to crime, then it riddles the city, the city needs to start severely punishing the drug trade and revamping the education system.

Many of those vacant homes cannot be rehabbed they need to be torn down. The city should just give these properties away for free to investors who will then rehab the properties or tear them down and build new structures. The problem is a lot of these properties have liens aka debt; unpaid property taxes and unpaid utility bills which adds to the acquisition costs and make it so that it’s not worth fixing up or even tearing down and building new homes. Just forgive the debt and sell the properties to investors who agree in writing to rehab the properties in exchange for reduced or no property taxes for a certain number of years. This will help make projects more financially attractive.

Baltimore City population has been declining for multiple consecutive years largely because of the crime and horrible education system. There's no point wasting government resources fixing up or renovating these homes when people are fleeing the city. Fix crime and the education system first, and everything else will follow.

I was an investor, buying and fixing properties in baltimore city. Don't let them fool you. Baltimore city council, zoning and inspectors makes it really hard for contractors, people or investors to make properties look good.
It almost looks like they do it on purpose to leave properties like that.
I pulled out of baltimore city along with 5 large investors because you just can't win shit.
