My current film dissertation is based on the Czech New Wave so this was an interesting and fun podcast - a generalisation of historical context was that the Fireman’s Ball was near the end of a time of reform communism in Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakian has been a satellite state of the Soviet Union since end of the1940s and after Stalin’s death, prime ministers of countries such a Czechoslovakia tried to reform communism in a way that would make less restrictive censorship. So during the 60’s many contributors of the Czech wave targeted the idiocy and bureaucracy in the Soviet Union at the time and in that was Formans comedies about the ruling of the country with its transition from highly restrictive Stalinist Soviet Union to a reformist period. In 1968, the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia, known as the Prague Spring, to reinstate a more restrictive communist state therefore censoring a lot of Czech new wave films that could have only been told during this period of the new wave. Due to this Forman exiled to America to make the classics you had mentioned at the beginning.
Blown away by this comment, Andrew. Thank you so much for taking the time out to write this, and for listening! Hope to see you around on other podcasts :)
I watched The Fireman’s Ball a few years ago, and I watched Loves of a Blonde a few months ago. I loved both of these Milos Forman movies!
Milos Forman brought so many treasures to our screens. Thanks for listening!
