I think there's a double meaning behind this first run. One of them could be you see him struggling and you have to start from somewhere. To me the second meaning of this run is so important because it shows that when you start anything in life it's always the most difficult. But the human spirit will prevail provided that you put in the work so nothing is easy in life.

The start of any Fitness routine is depressing. That's why most people fail. You have to build it.

It hurts so much to run after a long lay off

Up until Rocky fought Apollo Creed, his conditioning was more towards club fighting, not for 15 full rounds (original definition of "Going the Distance"; today being 12 rounds). When one watches "Rocky III", Apollo Creed knew, through film footage of Clubber Lang's previous bouts, that Lang won them (by knockout or TKO) in under three rounds: part of Rocky's training for the second Balboa-Lang fight involved making Rocky "more nimble", keeping Rocky's brute punching force in place while training him to move the way he moved, thus tiring Lang out during the second bout and securing the KO in the 3rd Round.

    Philadelphia Morning.
The music is just perfect for this gorgeous scene.
Thank you very much, Mr. Bill Conti.

Rocky knew he was up against. And him holding his side while struggling to run up the Art Museum steps indicates that he had a long road ahead of him before meeting Apollo Creed on New Year's Day, 1976.

this scene where this is playing is telling you that everything in this mans life evades him, rejects him, as he runs towards life, towards love, towards human connection, towards being a decent person and is constantly denied, even the news paper truck jets off as he's approaching it, so even first thing in the morning he's already being denied, try living like that, and see how it makes you feel inside, it can destroy you or propel you, in this case it propelled him and good for Rocky, he needed a victory in life, some appreciation, and even his bosses sidekick constantly bombs on him and dogs him out, Micky kicks him out of his locker, A LOCKER, a little piece of metal that holds dirty clothes is rejecting this man, are you starting to see the picture? the grunts as he's running, the sad music, it's a masterpiece, it's telling you it's not about boxing, it's about life and a man, a lonely man who finds love and that nourishes his soul, life isn't complicated people, we tend to let it get out of hand, it makes me sad because my eldest sister [deceased since 2008] was just born in [1975] before Rocky came out and my parents met and fell in love in the very parts of where the movie was filmed, and struggled, and moved to south jersey, and my father [deceased since 2002] always tried connecting to me tried telling me his history and love for Philly and Rocky and i was always too hyper as a kid or too much of an asshole to listen to him and i'm seriously regretting it i miss him everyday, Rocky is not about boxing trust me, as he's running up those steps in the early morning and you see the cars in the background moving on, it makes me tear up because that was probably my father going to work, providing for his family that never appreciated him, that's what i'm talking about, a lonely man, who is the greatest guy on earth yet is rejected at every instance in his life
