Love your reaction btw here the explanation of the lyrcs and mushc video. At the beginning of the music video, you see IU walking into a room, with a bed in the center. Now, I do not understand much Korean, but I have seen that the orange screen says something along the lines of “do you want to see the memories?” and she clicks yes. So she lies down on the bed, and basically this means that she is going back into her memories. The lyrics; “So are you happy now Finally happy now are you Well I’m just the same I feel like I lost everything Everything comes and goes as they wish, even without a goodbye” I believe that IU is referring to two of her close friends, Sulli and Jonghyun, who both committed suicide. She asks them if they are finally happy now, away from all the hate. But she feels that she has lost everything, her friends that she loved. She says that they came and then left, even without a goodbye to her. “If this is how things are, I don’t want to love anyone again” IU is saying that she is heartbroken and if this is how things are, then she doesn’t want to love someone again. “I’m just going to take a trip down my old memory lane” And she is. In the music video, she is lying on the bed, and the orange screen is kind of “accessing” those memories. She is going back to her memories of her friends. “Under the orange sun We dance together where there are no shadows There is no promised breakup there See you in my memory that is beautiful Forever young” In these lyrics, I think that she means that in her memories, she will dance together with them, and without shadows. I may be wrong but I think this is a bit like they are not really there anymore, they are a bit like ghosts? The way that they don’t have shadows. Just my interpretation. It could be something else. IU says that in her memories, there is no promised breakup, she means that they won’t leave her in her memories. She says “see you in my memory that is beautiful”, which means that she won’t forget them. IU says that they will always be “forever young” in her memories. After that, there is a scene where IU looks at a gecko in an enclosure, I feel like it had some kind of symbolic meaning. “It is a nightmare, I don’t want to wake up forever” I think it could mean that she doesn’t want to wake up from the dream, from the memory of them. Then there is Suga’s rap, and there is also some animation in the music video. “Island yes this is an island a small island made by you and me” IU is in a plane, and she looks out the window to see a gecko. “Yeah um forever young Forever is like a sandcastle” This part could mean that forever is not really forever, it’s like a sandcastle that could be washed away. (This is completely my thoughts, it could mean something else). IU sees the gecko and reaches out to it, and then there’s a “Electronic Devices Off” sign on the plane. This could mean that they are trying to say that sometimes, we should just turn our phones, our devices off. Like how social media is a really big thing now, and it can affect people really badly, maybe even to commit suicide. “Goodbye is like an emergency alert Wake up in the morning, longing for you” This part could mean that sometimes people just leave you, they just say goodbye I guess. And you wake up sometimes and you miss them. At this part of the video, the plane goes through a storm. The gecko disappears from her window. “I’ll pass through the infinite eternity To see you on the island again” And then IU wakes up from her bed, and rushes to see if the gecko is still there, in the glass enclosure. It isn’t. “As someone once said to comfort me It’s not easy to forget even a handful of memories A long time has passed, but the island still holds on to me” IU is saying that the island, or her memories of her friends, still hold on to her, and it’s not easy to forget them. Then, the animation starts up again and shows a girl in a white dress. I believe that this is Sulli (a female idol who commuted suicide) , who is sliding down the slope, escaping from what is in the world. “Under the orange sun We dance together where there are no shadows There is no promised goodbye there See you in my memory that is beautiful” Then, the girl reaches the edge of a cliff, and jumps, and there’s her silhouette on the orange sun. “We pillow our heads on each other And talk about things that are not sad There is no gloomy ending there I’ll see you in the memory forever Forever young” At this point, a dragon swoops from the sky and the girl in white lands on his back. I believe that this is Jonghyun, as a dragon. He and Sulli both fly away in the air, looking really happy. Back in the memories, a tear falls down from IU’s face. Then, the dragon and the girl go by the plane IU is on, and the girl in white looks back for a second. IU sees them through the window, unable to get to them, but happy that they are happy and flying away together. “Forever we young It is a nightmare, I don’t want to wake up forever” Finally, IU wakes up from the memories. If you look carefully, the lighting is brighter than when she first lay down. I think that this means she was sad and gloomy at the beginning, but now, knowing that her friends will always be in her memory, the scene is lighter. Extra: RM said in Suga’s Vlive (Honey FM) that this song would be a good one to listen in your car. It still has a happy tune you can enjoy without looking too deep into the meaning! :)
Island is a place without any shadows or sorrow. Somewhere where she is enjoying herself away from the toxic society with her friends. IU is braver than you think. She has an introverted personality and she lost two of her best friends due to sucide. She had a VERY tough childhood, was abused and got conned too. Mad respect for her. Addressing the issue even means a lot. I mean imagine your male best friend is no more and then female too....
Suga is the producer of this amazing song and his part and voice sounds soo good, versatile flow, I replay it over and over. Iu fav part is Suga part too, also Iu voice is good too!
