I flew three times in a Swissair B747. All very short haul flights from Zurich to Geneva which was most awesome. That was the normal flight route before flying over the big pond.
It is sad seeing these planes being retired as they have such an elegance to them. I spent many hours on BA 747's flying between London Heathrow and Phoenix Arizona. It always felt so good being in them even if I was in economy class. One of the best times was flying out over Scotland (home) and heading outt over the Atlantic ocean and down below was St Kilda.
I have seen every 747 that graced Heathrow carrying the BOAC and all subsequent BAW liveries I have been watching them come and as new and old planes, and have always looked upon then as technical master pieces, wonders of '60'S engineering. Dunsfold is only 12 miles from my home, but being that close to the queen is no substitute for have her soar over us, earning her keep. Farewell my queen. Thanks Sam, this is a fitting tribute to such a beautiful lady.
The captain the spoke at the end, his voice, his tone, his manner, that is exactly the sort of person we all imagine as British Airways captain. Good night queen!!
Made many transatlantic flights in the seventies and eighties as a young man. Almost all on the 747 as I recall. I never boarded one without thinking about what a magnificent aircraft. The emotional aspect of Sam's video really caught me off guard. Thank you sir.
This aircraft and the Concorde are the reason I fly. I am lucky to fly out of Cardiff and have enjoyed seeing the Queen. Even had the privilege of having a retired &$& captain as my flight instructor. We would talk for hours about these beautiful machines. No aircraft will ever come close. What a great video.
I saw the last KLM 747 take off from Toronto a few months ago. I never grew tired of seeing the 747's while working on the ramp at Pearson. The KLM and BA liveries are my all time favourites! The 747 was also the very first aircraft I ever flew on. This was back in 1986 - it was an Olympic airways flight from Toronto to Athens with a quick stop in Montreal. The most beautiful commercial aircraft ever produced in my opinion. Thank you for sharing this Sam!
“Do you think the plane’s gonna make it?” Is that even a question? It’s the 747, it’s gone through so much. Of course it would be able to land for its final flight. The end of an era. Always sad when 747s retires. Especially now since it’s British Airways. Love the retro liveries, the Landor one is my favorite. So generous of them to let you tour. The skies won’t be the same without its Queen
Avery... “Do you think the plane’s gonna make it?” Sure it is a question, if the plane is the 747 that needs a high weather ceiling to even approach an airport landing runway and you're sitting under a cloud thickening sky..dude!
Outstanding video and a great tribute to a great lady! BOAC and British Airways liveries gives so much dignity to such an iconic silhouette. Absolutely beautiful!!
As someone who has worked on and around 747-400 I felt the same knot of emotion in the stomach when my own airline retired them. I think this is my favourite of your videos so far, it really captured the occasion well. I will have to visit them next time I am in the UK
Thank You for this, I flew from UK to Australia in 1980, as a 13 yr old kid been able to visit the cockpit made me choose a career in aviation, what beautiful aircraft.
Love the BOAC logo. Timeless. It’s so hard knowing there’ll never be a BA 747 again, especially after BA was such a ironic and massive 747 carrier. So many happy journeys on the BA’s -100, -200 and -400s
Always heartbreaking to witness the moment that a perfectly serviceable aircraft lands for the last time and becomes "furniture", especially one as iconic as this. Great video!
It’s so emotional, i was sitting in-front of my mother while watching this and there were tears in my eyes and my mum asked why are you crying while watching a plane documentary? I said mum “you won’t understand “😞😔
It's so true. Unless it's in your blood, people don't get it. "It's just a machine!" They say. Oh it's so much more than that. There's only one thing harder than watching a plane be shut down for the final time, and that's seeing them being dismantled. I literally can't watch that. It just breaks my heart, seeing these majestic, elegant beings, each with their own personality, being cut up for scrap.
What a brilliant goodbye video to the Jumbo this is!! Having flown on her as cabin crew for 25 years, its a heartbreaks but the way you filmed this alongside your excitment & enthusiasm made the bitter pill taste that much sweeter. Thankyou ✈🙏💖💖💖👋👋👋💖💖💖👆 And Goodbye SPEEDBIRD 747, QUEEN OF THE SKIES!

Sam Chui - I LOVE your passion. I was on the Tobin Bridge (high vantage point) when one of the first 747's was landing in Boston - June 1970. Fifty years ago. The 747 took me to points all over the globe. It is hard not to be emotional about this machine which opened the doors for so many people to see so many of our world neighbors. Thank you for documenting in all your videos how these machines - all of them - have made us all better neighbors. God bless you and keep teaching and reminding us about how fortunate we all are.
From what I understand it was because they wanted to replace the safer 4 engine planes with more fuel efficient 2 engine planes. One benefit is supposed to be that the 2 engine planes are supposed to be able to fly longer without refueling so it should be possible to fly more places direct without a stopover. The reality is that I have not seen any routes that had a stopover change to a direct flight when they replace a 747 route with a 2 engine plane. I think the cost of fuel was probably the only reason.
@@peteconrad2077 I understand that twins are more fuel efficient but how are twins safer? What if you loose one of the engines? How long can a twin maintain altitude?
@@Shibu11229 it can maintain a lower altitude until it runs out of fuel. It’s just a little lower than the altitude a four engine aircraft can maintain in 3. In general, the system in twins are simpler and thus offer less opportunity for failure. Airbus recognised this when they built the A380, which doesn’t have full Sicilians systems on all of its engines. Every multiple engine failure in airline history has had a common cause, this more engines would not have helped.
The true Queen of the Skies! I firmly believe there will never quite be another aircraft to even closely resemble the elegance and grace of the 747. Farewell beautiful bird.
*I've met some of these pilots before. They seemed really proud and joyful whenever they mentioned that they were a 747 pilot. I wonder what aircraft they'll be flying next*
Fantastic way to say goodbye to a true Queen of the Sky. I first flew on BOAC as a passenger in the 1970s as a school boy to Hong Kong for school holidays. In the eighties for a year I was member of BA cabin crew working on Tristar , 737 and 747. Very emotional
My favorite equipment. Flew across the pond many times in a 747. I remember watching my first 747 land at Heathrow circa 1972. I was speechless. It is such a beautiful plane and I always had a great flying experience on them. So sad they are gone now. Great video - thanks. Pretty choked up right now.
Hi Sam and all others. this was a super emotional video. Thanks. The 747 is exactly as old as I am, and it was always my dream to be a captain on it, but unfortunately, I made it all the way to the 777 left seat and not the 747. Thank you 747 for being an inspiration of an era.
One of the best videos of the year for me....thanks. Bitter sweet indeed. Sad to see her go as they all have a soul and a personality and it is the end of an era, but great to see it will be preserved along with the legacy of BOAC. As an avgeek myself since I was a kid and having flown on many variants of the 747 over the years, it truly is emotional to see them disappear. Thanks again Sam, was a nice presentation all round.
Fighting tears seeing 747 now finally in its resting place. Spent most of my childhood flying in this aircraft. My first time alone and the first time it took off I knew I was in safe hands. Most exhilarating feeling. I always relished to be back in the skies with 747 Brings back many good memories. Best of British
I never flew the 747, always wanted to fly it. So seeing this documentary, she is just gorgeous, seeing her final taxi wifh the fire salute just makes me cry. And the landing, wow! The smoothest 747 landing ive ever seen. Much smoother than the smoothest Embraer E190 landing i experienced.
"The Grande Dame", "The Queen Of The Skies"!! The 747. What a Beauty!! I rode on a 747 in the late 1990's to go to California to visit my brother for Christmas!! BIG plane with rows and rows of seats. The view of the ground below from the plane....simply breathtaking. Will NEVER forget it as long as I live!!! 🙂🥰🙂🥰
Thank you for this great 👍 video stream she was not just a plane ✈️ she was the queen of the skies in so so many ways it really does bring a tear to your eyes for everyone just like the Concorde did. I just so wish we could keep them both flying what a dream come true that would be !!! (THANK YOU) 🛫🛬✈️
Thank You Sam for always pulling at our heartstrings with your shared love for aviation and travel. Tomorrow's generation will never know what it was like to travel the world onboard a Queen.
The first time when I saw a B747 in person while standing on the airport ground was a few years ago and I don't remember which airport it was, when it had passed by I was just in awe of the size and stood there till she passed by completely. It was a Luftansa B747. Unfortunately hadn't had the luck to fly in one.
On October, 1984, I was a kid when I first entered on a VARIG's 747. So I am also very emotional now, after watching this beautiful video. So many memories... Thank you very much, Sam!
Sam Chui - you're a legend sir! Just like these last 747s. Wonderful enthusiasm - it's catching (and emotional) to see these last Queens land and shut-down for good.
I can still remember my first trip to Asia, an economy flight on the BA 747 Jumbo from Heathrow to HongKong KaiTak in summer 1994. The beautiful air hostess Jane or Janice Lau did a great job. Three weeks later, when I flew back to Europe, she was working in business class and I never saw her again. RIP 747, hopefully this 'Great Reset' that is planned by some psychos can be stopped and we will get our old life back!
I had the pleasure of flying in the upper deck Business on the BA 747 in the BOAC livery on February 28, 2020 from Heathrow to O’Hare. We departed from the B Gates at Heathrow Terminal 5. It looks like it may have been one of the last remaining revenue flights of that aircraft due to the virus. It was my first, and only time flying in the upper deck of a 747 and I only wish I could have savored it more if would have known it was going to probably be the last time. Watching this final flight and shutdown brought a tear.
Flown on a few of the BA 747s. Will miss them. Also seen both of these flying in the beautiful aircraft flying in the sunshine of Dubai. A sight I’ll never forget.
Despite the recent troubles got to thank Boeing for making some wonderful planes. B747 always looked best in BOAC livery. No question about that in my mind. Fabulous video. Subbed.
G-BYGC will always hold a special place for me as my 2nd and last flight on a 747 was on board this aircraft wearing the BOAC livery back in June 2019. Now knowing the aircraft is being scrapped makes me sick to my stomach, but sadly without the funding needed to preserve her it doesn't make sense to keep the aircraft around.
I've flown on a 747 2 or 3 times before, but that was when I was 4 years old and younger so I don't remember a single thing, but I'm glad I can say, that my physical body has been inside a 747!
I flew the 747 numerous times from NY to CALIFORNIA and from NY to London , flying coach class was equivalent to flying premium economy the leg room was fantastic
Agreed..I managed to fly on the 747 twice - both in quick succession before she retired and I have to say, the BA 747 economy was so comfortable and I had so much room.
Such a shame that these are retiring. I flew on one once a few years back and it was the best flight of my life! I’m glad 3 are definitely being preserved
It is always emotional to see the farewell of the queen of the sky, and I know I will still feel the same way even after seeing it again and again for 100 more times.
I feel blessed to have had the opportunity of flying the British Airways 747-400 from Las Vegas to London (nonstop) and back last September. What a beautiful plane! I will miss seeing that majestic aircraft. 😥
Thanks for this video Sam, quite emotional especially for me as I started my engineering career with BOAC way back in 1971 when the 747 was flying in the old BOAC livery. Very happy that these aircraft are going to be preserved and have not gone to the scrap yard.

What a wonderfully put together tribute to a true icon of the skies, her crew and her fans
The landor livery of the 747 british airways has been saved
Amazing!
I had the oportunity to flight on a British Airways 747 twice and it was great to remember that experience. Thank you so much for that, Sam!
*I've met some of these pilots before. They seemed really proud and joyful whenever they mentioned that they were a 747 pilot. I wonder what aircraft they'll be flying next*
Indeed, these pilots I met are all seasoned and very gracious to the occasion. They will be moving on to B787/A350 which is the future of BA.
@@SamChui Eventually some of them will move on to the 777X since it was supposed to be replacing the BA744 before the virus hit.
I thought they would fly the 777 200 and 300 next.
Not gonna lie, I'm in the US and this got me tearing up, and I had no emotions at all when Delta and UA retired their's.
No delta’s 747 is a legend
UA felt more emotional than this one tbh
My favorite equipment. Flew across the pond many times in a 747. I remember watching my first 747 land at Heathrow circa 1972. I was speechless. It is such a beautiful plane and I always had a great flying experience on them. So sad they are gone now. Great video - thanks. Pretty choked up right now.
These 747s still look stunning 😍
And the BOAC landing! Wow
That was such an emotional and heartbreaking farewell to Queen of the Skies...
Thx Sam and all crew for sharing it with us!
Very emotional Sam!! Thank you for bringing us this moment
I flew several years on the 747. Thx for this video which brings back the good memories and even special moments.
The most beautiful plane ever build. I have tears in my eyes. And for me, the
Fighting tears seeing 747 now finally in its resting place.
Spent most of my childhood flying in this aircraft. My first time alone and the first time it took off I knew I was in safe hands. Most exhilarating feeling.
I always relished to be back in the skies with 747
Brings back many good memories.
Best of British
I never thought I would tear up and get all choked up over a plane landing. What a wonderful video, Sam. Thank you!
The BOAC livery is stunning! What an amazing video Sam! Really touching, this plane will be missed so much :(
"The Grande Dame", "The Queen Of The Skies"!!
The 747.
What a Beauty!!
I rode on a 747 in the late 1990's to go to California
to visit my brother for Christmas!!
BIG plane with rows and rows of seats.
The view of the ground below from the plane....simply breathtaking.
Will NEVER forget it as long as I live!!!
🙂🥰🙂🥰
Awesome video Sam! Love it! 😀👍👍
I flew once on a 747 to Australia. What an amazing plane. Thanks, Sam for documenting these sad days.
Thank you for this great 👍 video stream she was not just a plane ✈️ she was the queen of the skies in so so many ways it really does bring a tear to your eyes for everyone just like the Concorde did. I just so wish we could keep them both flying what a dream come true that would be !!! (THANK YOU) 🛫🛬✈️
The most beautiful logo on any aircraft ever....BOAC with gold speedbird. Best look for a 747 ever ❤
This is so emotional seeing the Queen of the skies once again
We are proud to still fly our Tupolevs
I think that kid who likes Hong Kong would've loved to see Kai Tak
Lol
tupolevs-wise idk, but kai tak is for sure
Would love to see a Tupolevs as they are flying legends. Not sure I would want to fly in one though!!!
You said it supreme lider 👍👏🤣😁
🤣🤣🤣
I have never flown on a 747 and I really hope that we're able to travel again before the time has come for this magnificent plane 😭😭
Me too, I hope to fly the Lufthansa 747-8 after covid
British Airways Thank You For Your Help.......... We Lost A Legend
Such a shame that these are retiring. I flew on one once a few years back and it was the best flight of my life! I’m glad 3 are definitely being preserved
The 747 was the plane that got me into aviation.
Mee too🤧
Most iconic plane in the skies...no matter what they say. Greetings from Málaga (AGP).
We will never forget you 747 ✊🏽✊🏽❤️😢
It is always emotional to see the farewell of the queen of the sky, and I know I will still feel the same way even after seeing it again and again for 100 more times.
I agree with you
Oh, this is just so sad! I hope the queen of the sky’s return soon. It is just so sad that the last BA-747 is retiring. :(
There are no words that can describe what it was like to say goodbye to a 20+ year career flying these amazing ladies.
We will miss you 747
So many memories on this magical iconic aircraft. Thank you Sam for sharing and taking the effort to document this historic moment.
So sad to see them go..I’ve flown in loads of jumbos....definitely my favourite commercial aircraft ever...thanks for sharing Sam.
really is the most beautiful plane. Sad to see her go, was lucky to be there for Landor arriving
I was at Heathrow in 1971 to watch the first commercial flight of a BOAC 747. Great memories from this video, thanks Sam.
Dad: “why are you crying so damn loud?”
also dad:it’s just a plane
Ryanair doesn't care :)
@@ryanairpilot2512 😐
Parents don't care about us avation geeks.
@@ryanairpilot2512 Uh yes. Ryanair's Irish. Makes sense! 🇬🇧🤝🇮🇪
I feel blessed to have had the opportunity of flying the British Airways 747-400 from Las Vegas to London (nonstop) and back last September. What a beautiful plane! I will miss seeing that majestic aircraft. 😥
Goodbye 747!
A true Queen of the skies
747 will always stay with us. Even when it’s not.
@@Proactivebeetleondamic it's flying high in plane heaven
Thanks for this video Sam, quite emotional especially for me as I started my engineering career with BOAC way back in 1971 when the 747 was flying in the old BOAC livery. Very happy that these aircraft are going to be preserved and have not gone to the scrap yard.
20:00, the moment Sam Chui realises he's an international celebrity. You're living my dream mate!
I am in tears. Such a touching moment. This video will be a memorablia for all 747 lovers all around the world 😍
😭😭😭🤧

Great video Sam; the review of all the liveries was wonderful. The crew interviews are clear insight to professionals who love their and the equipment they use performing their jobs.
Started with BOAC. Ended with BOAC.
