Thank you so much Roger!! I was given a Coelogyne mooreana Brockhurst as a Christmas gift. I’ve been trying you shift outside my orchid comfort zone. When I got it, it had the leaf bubbles. I thought I was doing something wrong because they persisted. Thank you for saying about how they’re there because they’re fussy to water!!!!!
This was interesting Roger. I have a pholidota chinensis that was so healthy when I bought it and its roots were in food-wrap. I placed it in a barky mix with some moss and it's been sulking a long, long time. The new growth is coming slowly and I'm hopeful that will make new roots.
I have a flaccida with a pleasant smell. It’s a small plant but it has been flowering faithfully the past two years . It does produce pendulous spikes. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Coelogynes. Happy growing.
Thanks for the video, now i know that I have a smaller version of cristata with round psbs. I used to grow C. cristata in stable environment year round as KEW, but it not seems to be happy. The lack of the winter rest would be a reason of its poor growth this year. I will try change conditions this year.
I appreciate this tutorial on the Coelogyne genus. I have a Lawrenceana that I got at my November orchid society meeting and am happy to have some info on culture and care. A Cymbidium tutorial is next on my wish list!
Love seeing videos on different orchid types. Never seen these before... blooms on the site look beautiful. I do have 11 orchids now... All doing well, thankfully. At least two are definitely in bud and one hybrid phalaenipsis looks to be starting also. =)
Thanks for sharing this site, I finally found decent information about the prolific assamica and my giant banana leaved but flower reluctant bufordiense! Very topical subject.
I have cristata var. alba, flaccida and fimbriata and only the last is doing tolerably well. It's the East Midlands OS meeting this Sunday and I'll be taking the first two to get rid. They just aren't happy in my conditions. They aren't dying but they're not thriving, either, so I'm better off with using the space for something that will thrive.
Thank you Roger for sharing that link. It’s a great resource 👍. I only have one Coelogyne. It’s the species usitana. ( a warm grower). It’s still a young plant and I hope I can get it to blooming size.🤞I’d love to see the flower- pristine white with a VERY dark burgundy/black/burnt orange tongue.
Very nice! I have just one and not for long - since November - Coelogyne Lyme Bay = usitana x speciosa, she is still a bit of stranger to me, so I approach her with caution, but there is a new bulb growing... I will probably get more, like the look of them...
Thanks for that information Roger. My nitidia flowers like mooreana, straight through a ‘tube’ before the leaves and pseudobulb develops. The problem I sometimes have with both mooreana and nitidia is that the flower spike gets stuck in the tube and doesn’t advance. Maybe something to do with watering or temperature. Difficult to know what goes wrong sometimes. Angela
Hi Roger, I've been hoping for this video. I have four Coelogynes,( cristata, speciosa*usitana "Lime bay", flaccida and fimbriata). Fimbriata was flowering in September and it is easy to care. Lime bay is growing like crazy and hope for the flowers this year. Cristata is pushing two new growths but flaccida is giving me headache. Sitting there, doing nothing just as you said they can do.
My flaccida did nothing for ages until I gave it a bit more light. Then the flower spike went off like a shot, but Roger says here that the spikes will do nothing for ages, then take off. So maybe that’s all that happened with mine 😆
@@Orchideya It's potted in fine bark and sphagnum moss mix in a basket. I keep it moist, not let it dry completely between watering. Winter time it's growing under the LED light full spectrum, summer outside. Fertilizing weekly weakly. I bought it last year from Schwerter, as F1 plant, so this year I expect flowers .Lol
When I had flaccida, it took a very long time to start growing - well over a year. It did eventually bloom and I didn't like the fragrance so I got rid of it.
@@leafrigula8412 Thank you for the info! I got mine just recently, in November, my first coelogyne too... Potted it into clay pot with sphagnum, so far it seems ok, growing new bulb. Good to know about keeping it moist, I am an overwaterer and a root rotter and usually discipline myself to let my orchids to dry completely between waterings(clay with sphagnum helps with that Lol)....
I've read that flaccida to some people smells wonderful. Unfortunatelly to me it smells like horse poo. But perfumed horse poo. With vanilla and other things.
Really informative as usual Roger. Coincidentally I've got a video coming out soon about my Coelogene Cristata. There's something wrong with it and I'd love your input if you can spare a minute. I understand if you can't though - time is precious! 😬
Interest video. If Coelogynes can be cool to cold growers and that means some then I would be all over them as I leave my home over the winter on the cool to cold side of things. Something I may get this spring. Just not sure yet. Lovely green leaves on them and waiting to see the blooms coming.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai if I remember correctly it(flowering habit) reminded me of Lily of the valley when it flowered first time for me last year. Hope I can flower your mooreanna without much trouble 🤞🏼🍀
Pieces can be cut off with at least 3 bulbs and planted up separately. Coelogynes don't like root disturbance and will often 'sulk' and not grow for some time.
Roger does any of your Coelogynes have a fragrance? My Coelogyne rigidia which was miss labeled I think that it is Coelogyne lentiginose anyways the flowers smell just like cinnamon and I sware I never had any cinnamon anywhere near the orchid.
Funny. My flaccida smells to me like horse poo. But my nitida has one of the most wonderful fragrances of all my 100 orchids. Lilyofthevalley like, but sweeter. Only downside: needs cold.
You could try spicesotic-plants on Ebay but they only post to the UK so it may depend on whether you are north or south of the boarder. You would have to check with them.
Roger, I see you pronounce this with a soft c, as do I and most people I've heard pronounce it. Recently I was corrected, to use the hard C when pronouncing it. Due to the o following the c. Have you heard anyone else pronounce differently from you?

It's a cooler grower and will slow right down if it gets too warm.
Roger; thanks! A lot of good information! I I still have hope for my Mooreanna...with each new growth I think maybe it will bloom.
It will eventually - don't let it go totally dry especially as new growths are developing.

Thanks for the info. I won a coelogyne ovalis at a raffle. I can’t wait to see it bloom. It has a few leaves that have turned brown.

I know one of mine is the Cristata and now I may have a Mooreana (came without ID) more fussy ones Yippie 😁 have them mounted

May I ask where did you get that clear bulb planting basket? (If it’s still available after all these years)
Ebay - they came in 3 sizes.

Only when repotting which I try not to do often as they don't like root disturbance.
