- "Die Wacht am Rhein" (The Watch on the Rhine) is a German patriotic anthem, which was also considered as an unofficial national anthem. The song's origins are rooted in the historical French-German enmity, and it was particularly popular in Germany during the Franco-Prussian War and the First World War. The original poem was written by Max Schneckenburger in 1840, and is generally sung to music written by Karl Wilhelm in 1854, seven years after Schneckenburger's death.
FRANÇAIS: Die Wacht am Rhein (La Garde au Rhin) est un chant ayant eu parmi le peuple allemand un statut non officiel d'hymne national. Il fut écrit en 1840 par Max Schneckenburger, après la « crise du Rhin » provoquée par le second ministère Thiers, et mis en musique en 1854 par Karl Wilhelm. Il fut chanté pendant le Reich, jusqu'en 1922, date où le Deutschlandlied fut choisi comme hymne officiel.
DEUTSCH: Die Wacht am Rhein ist ein politisches Lied, welches im Deutschen Kaiserreich ab 1871 neben Heil dir im Siegerkranz die Funktion einer inoffiziellen Nationalhymne hatte. Der Text wurde 1840 während der Rheinkrise von Max Schneckenburger verfasst. Erst mit der im März 1854 von Carl Wilhelm komponierten Vertonung und prominenten Aufführung bei der Silberhochzeit des späteren Kaisers Wilhelm I. gewann es an Popularität, die sich 1870/71 noch steigerte. Bereits vor 1900 wurde es vielfach parodiert.

Fun Fact. A few years ago, they found a audio record of an american journalist interviewing Otto von Bismarck and recording it. The first part was a about current politics, the second part dealt with Otto giving personal advice to his son in university (dont drink too much, stay away from the women) and the last third was him singing La Marseillaise

This song was made after the Rhine Crisis of 1840 when France demanded all territory left of the Rhine be ceded to her. In response the German confederation started a large fortress construction program and nationalistic sentiment rose to great heights.

Operation "WATCH ON THE RHINE"....was the German code, for what would become, The Battle of The Bulge. It intentionally leads you to think it is a defensive operation on, or near the rhine river. When in fact it was a VERY offensive operation into the Ardennes. Awesome video. Thank you for uploading.

And yeah, if you can think back 149 years (and a little before, fresh in memory at that time), the boots marching and conquering across Europe were not German. It was another country just to the left, who had been thrashing the continent in one way or another for most of 1000 years.

@@litamtondy Interesting factlet: In 1919 at the Versailles Peace Conference, France demanded that the Rhineland region of Germany be made an independent national entity, to act as a buffer between France and Germany. They asked U.S. Pres Woodrow Wilson to support the idea.
Wilson and British PM David Lloyd-George, however, both knew that France had been trying to annex the Rhineland since the time of Louis XIV, and turned thumbs down on the idea.

Nationalism has done nothing for Europeans except making us fight each other over and over again. We had 80 years of peace in Central Europe, something that has never happened before. Americans soldiers March through our streets with impunity while American flags fly in our skies. There is nothing wrong with wanting the best for your country, and that does not mean that you have hate for another country.
