Yeah, like I was getting the vibe with them replicating the scene where he pets toothless for the first time....like I'm not going to judge an entire movie on a scene from the teaser but like ....something about it was really too one-to-one. As Eric said, it really was just trying too hard to hit the note exactly like the cartoon. Like that scene had the exact same framing and perspective lol. It really was just "slap a realistic filter on a cartoon but play the same footage"
But like I said, literally just one teaser trailer, I'm not going to pull hairs XD.
What people don't get is that live action remakes can be good....as long as they don't commit character assassinations by changing them for the worse (looks at ATLA Netflix with disdain)

liKE YEah absolutely, bUT. how could you possibly improve on that story, though? like if it's a remake, and I agree with Eric, it should definitely be different.... but HTTYD is already so so good! Thing is, not everyone watches animated movies. I didn't grow up watching a lot of the Disney animated films, so the live action movies have been my introduction to a lot of these stories. And while I have seen all of How to Train your Dragon movies, I'm ok with watching the exact same story 1-1 in a different medium.

  • @brettdiving2744

To Eric's valid concerns, the director Dean DeBois (who directed the original animated film by the way) has stated that this will be a "retelling", not a copy of the animated film. I'm sure they just used some of the iconic scenes and visuals for this teaser just to tell people that "hey, this IS How to Train Your Dragon." The actual film itself is going to deviate from the original animated film quite a bit if I'm understanding Dean's statement correctly.

the thing that I'm picking up on is that, if it was going to be 100% the same then why not just leave the original alone? So that means the remake has to be different, but people also don't want it to be different to the point where it no longer captures the spirit of the original. So, in order to remake something, the writers and directors should really find a way to reconcile these two groups. A successful but not perfect example is HBO's The Last of Us. It's almost the same with many shot-for-shot with the video game, but there was also a lot of creative differences that essentially made it its own but didn't take away from the theme of the game.

The only reason I’m actually genuinely excited for this and not just writing it off like the Disney ones is because Dean DeBlois the same director who made all 3 of the animated movies is returning to make this… so there must be something he wants to add to this story for this version. Also there are 12 novels in the series and the 3 animated movies didn’t adapt all of them. So I’m hoping with this version they’re going for a Harry Potter kinda amount of movies and adaption plus it’s much much quicker to make live action versions than the animated

The designs of the dragons are the one thing I wanted to be similar to the movies because they are so iconic to that world. No other media has those dragons and I think changing them would take away from the expressions and mannerisms we got in the movies. They are essentially big dogs and cats.
I also think the one scene that you really need to nail is the first meeting of Toothless and Hiccup because their relationship is the essence of all of the movies and it looks like based on this teaser, its going to be perfect.
The film is also written, produced and directed by Dean DeBlois. He directed all 3 of the animated movies so I think we are in safe hands!

I get what Eric is saying. I thought the live action Little Mermaid was just okay, personally. Visually beautiful, with Halle Bailey nailing her role as Ariel, and I enjoyed Prince Eric getting more of a backstory. At the same time the musical numbers didn't feel anywhere near as hard-hitting or grand as in the original, I did not like the scuttlebutt song, or the rap, and Triton came off as an emotionless sociopath.
That being said, those are just my own personal feelings on the movie. I know a lot of people loved it. All this to say that I like the look of the trailer, I love that they brought Gerard back to play Stoick again, I love how Toothless looks, but I'm still apprehensive about the movie itself. I don't know how to feel about it yet. Maybe I'll love it, maybe it'll just be another unneeded live action remake.

  • @aime7035
    @aime7035 11 часов назад +17

Me personally, as an animation enthusiast, I think this teaser is the perfect proof of how live action remakes are not necessarily unwanted, but absolutely unnecessary. Their existence itself is supporting the thesis that live action is what improves on animation, when it's absolutely the other way around, and it's why animation is its own form of art.
DreamWorks seems to have learned from Disney's live action faults in regards to script (too early of a call anyways since this is just a teaser), and Sonic's faults in regards to... design, I suppose. In avoiding backlash, they stayed safe not changing anything, it seems, which is alright. However, I do agree with Eric in that if we had a 1:1 copy, we'd rather watch the og content. A remake should always seek to improve on the original, but.... How do you possibly make HTTYD better?
If they changed things too much, there'd be people complaining it's not loyal to the animated version and it loses its charisma (they'd be right, but there's an unavoidable loss in translation when you change mediums, IT'S WHY animation does things live action cannot and viceversa), and if they didn't shake things up a little, we'd be stuck with what we seem to have here right now.

    • @InkyPetrel
      @InkyPetrel 8 часов назад

So much this. I will fight on the "you can't just port things from animation and expect the same result" hill all day. Animation is its own art form, and it is simply BETTER for certain types of story. I mean, half of this thing is going to BE animated anyway. They're clearly not going the physical prop route, (probably wise. Animatronics and puppetry definitely have their own appeal, but something of this scale would be a behemoth task, and a financial nightmare, and probably wouldn't be finished before the film's 20th anniversary ,if they took the time to do it right) so what we end up with is this awkward mix of the two that is just always going to feel janky. It doesn't FIT live action.
But animation is still often treated like a "draft" version of live action, like somehow making a live version makes the film inherently better. It's just snobbery, people refuse to see past the idea of animation as something "for children", and miss how much richness and depth you can achieve with animation, as well as the potential to tell stories that simply aren't possible in any other medium. ...*steps off soap box *
Point is, I agree, animation is the best visual medium for this story. It just IS. Making it live action just feels like trying to recreate Starry Night as a photograph. It's a lot of work, and even if it's the same shape, it's never going to invoke the same feeling.

      This!
The original script is so tight. Gobber and other characters say lines that raise questions, then we cut to those questions.

Personally, I’m thrilled for this movie. Like everyone else, I adore this franchise. The animated movies and series are art, as any animation is. It’s a wonderful creation.
I think creating a live action version of an animated project can compliment the original both by doing things differently or doing things the same. I guess I prefer them to do things the same, but even if things aren’t all exactly the same, if it’s done correctly, then it works. We’ve seen with Disney that they stray from originals in ways that have not worked well for the majority of people. It’s just a complex task. One example I will forever use is “Ahsoka”. We all thought the next story following Ahsoka and Sabine after ‘Rebels’ would be animated. Then BOOM, it’s live action. Of course we’re hyped! These characters are coming to live action! It’s a huge deal! So many pros, and it was a gorgeous show. But, the downside was that you can ALWAYS do more with animation, so of course things weren’t as fluid or the same like the fight scenes. In my opinion, that’s just the way it is, and I was thrilled with what we got.
I’m very excited for this movie, and I have high hopes that it will be great especially since the original director/producer is doing it. The returning theme at the end got me even more hyped for it.

This movie just didn't need to be made. People are going to be unhappy with either outcome; a shot-for-shot remake of the original (with identical character designs) is just a horribly transparent cash-grab, but Lion King and Aladdin have shown that people won't accept too much change from the original either.
Would have been cool if we got like a Black Sails/Treasure Island type thing; a really dark, adult story set in the same world that stands on its own... like seeing the Vikings' first encounters with dragons on Berk, or something of that nature.

The books are so vastly different you can barely call them the same thing.
Dont get me wrong, the animated movies were done very well, but at the same time my heart wishes for an adaptation following at least the rough worldbuilding guidelines of the books.
Vikings fighting romans, toothless actually being toothless and the tiniest and most useless dragon ever (or maybe not). Hicks being the first person to learn the dragon language and being able to talk to them. The vikings actually not killing all dragons but every viking having a dragon...

Im kinda on the boat Eric is sailing. It looks good, but there isn’t a point if it’s the EXACT same. Beauty and the Beast is a good example of animation to live action(i havent seen the new little mermaid); some changes to characters, new songs, added story beats for additional backstory, it added more while still telling the same story.
The cgi Lion King is the bad example, and all the critiques are well known at this point. But it still made Disney money.
There will be people that go see this one and like it or hate it. Either way, Dreamworks gets money. Plus, they can use this as additional advertising for their Epic Universe thing at their theme park; Berk is one of the sections in it, after all.
Let’s just hope Dreamworks doesnt try to do live action Kung Fu Panda

I think a good example is Beast from the live action Beauty and the Beast. He was not a 1:1 recreation of the Beast’s shapes and silhouette using realistic textures, and it would’ve looked really weird and out of place if he was.

Make Hiccup a kid who can talk to dragons, make Toothless a tiny useless green dragon with a terrible attitude, make Snotlout a big bully who wants to assassinate Hiccup and take over Berk. Take other stuff from the source material and make a whole different movie.

I'm with Eric on this one. There is ALREADY a brilliant How To Train Your Dragon film. It exists. I can go watch it right now. The music has haunted my dreams for over a decade.
WHY does this need to be a thing? It's the same objection I feel for most live-action remakes of animation tbh, like...what purpose does it serve? Update the animation if you want to flex on the CGI, I guess, but either you're making a copy, which at BEST can only ever hope to be "as good" but with actors who aren't as expressive and can't feel as "big" as the story, like animated characters can. OR they're diverging from the original story in some meaningful way, in which case... make a new sequel? (But of course then you couldn't cash in on the nostalgia).
A live action version is NEVER going to be able to replicate what's possible in animation, unless you basically...make an animated film, in which case, again, WHY?
If they wanted to make another sequel and maybe make it live action, that would make more sense. But just remaking the classic feels like a pointless waste of resources when the movie already exists. I mean, financially I can see why. They're choosing a remake because nostalgia is going to make it a much more certain bet, but if they were actually trying to create a new classic, a remake would be the worst choice. (I know that's not why they make movies, but if there was some artistic integrity present in the decision process, in some alternative universe)
Like the AtLA live-action series, the reason it's even on the board for a remake is because the original is beloved, but that's what also makes this feel pointless to me.
The only other reason to think a live action version is inherently an IMPROVEMENT is if they are of the opinion that animation is somehow inferior as a storytelling medium, and therefore the move "needs" a live action version to be respected as a proper film? I have heard this floated before.
In which case, I hope they sleep well with their objectively wrong opinions, I guess? 😆
    oops, accidentally a rant.
    Tl:Dr: ...why?

To be honest I was sold as soon as I saw Toothless and special effects are good enough to do the live-action versions of the dragons.
I do get Eric's point about Disney's live-action duds but I think that won't affect HTTYD because every aspect of HTTYD was already so good that even if the live-action is a complete copy and paste of the animation, it still would contain all the other good elements that made HTTYD great.
