  • In this video, Emma talks about cerumen, best known as ear wax.
    What is it?
    What purpose does it serve?
When should we worry about it?
Does wearing a hearing aid interfere with it?

I thought it protects ears from
loud noise. Seems like My ears produce more wax when my headphones have been on

Hi Emma, thank you for this video! Only one of my ears seems to build it much faster than the other... I've had to have it cleaned out twice in 5 years because of compete blockage causing loss of hearing... but glad it was that simple!!
BTW love your vids... the way you speak is so cute and holds attention to your words... love it!!!

I did never had cerumen problems until I put something in my ear... and that thing was a hearing aid. CIC initially, causing vac issues, but the current BTE from Phonak - as well as the headphones I need to wear for teleconference activity while working from home - are ongoing. Get tickling feeling as if small balls of wax were hanging on ear-hair; I can feel it becoming more viscous overnight when I sleep on my side and the ear is fully covered and doesn’t cool like the opposite one, this time feels it is trickling out but does not quite make it. Tried several commercial products and none are fully satisfactory : Audisol - simply seawater based - does not dissolve wax; CleanEars a bit better oil-based product but it would need to be warm to help; and finally Cerumol that seems the best but too smelly 🙁. An audiologist’s advice on how best overcome this would be welcome, but the video has not given any suggestions in this regard.

Hi Peter, Thanks for your comment. Different products work better for different people and it can depend on they type of wax you generate. Water and water-based agents (such as sodium bicarb drops and Waxsol) soften wax and break it apart. Oil-based options (e.g. olive oil, CleanEars, Miracell ProEar) lubricate and soften wax without breaking it apart, non-oil, non-water-based options (e.g. Ear Clear) soften and loosen wax. It's important to follow the instructions for the product used for best results. It's also important to note that using wax softener can sometimes resolve the wax build-up on it's own (mostly when the build-ip is minimal); however, with a larger amount of wax, softening drops assist in faster and gentler removal by your professional.

Bees have developed something similar and it is known as Propollis, this is also a natural antibiotic. In urban environments they will often collect tar from road bitumen which contains phenol a useful antiseptic. What I can't figure out is how they know about antibacterial substances, they live such a short time (6 weeks for the workers) but that knowledge gets passed down the generations.

It’s really good advice. Could you please tell me why does the earwax make produce more and change colour and bloke it?

I love your videos Emma, thank you for sharing with us. I am just waiting for my first pair of Oticon More 3s and find this video particularly helpful. I sometimes have a build up of wax which then blocks one side. I usually manage with home remedies but I'm a bit concerned that the RIC may actually push wax back in the canal. Do you have any evidence of this or advice. (from Harrogate, UK).

Hi David. The simple act of inserting hearing aids in your ears can push wax back down the ear canal. So if wax build-up is an ongoing issue for you, it should be something that your clinician considers when recommending devices to you. If you are prone to wax build up, it's important to ensure a good cleaning schedule for your hearing aids. While your hearing aid can push some wax back down the canal, it can't push it back too far (it simply doesn't go deep enough in your ear to do so). You can also use a gentle wax softener on a regular basis (at night time) to manage wax.

Hi Sean! So wonderful to hear from someone back home :) These are two very different hearing aids, both have their merits. It really depends on your Pure Tone Audiogram, your Signal-to-Noise ratio loss (this is VERY important) and even your anatomy and lifestyle. You are welcome to send your results to us and we can give some advice. Also, may I suggest that you get a second opinion from a local independent audiologist? It would be best for you to be assessed and treated by an audiologist who does not have contracts to sell particular products, which is the case with specsavers, I'm afraid.
