    Peel back the curtains and step onto the set of one of America's most beloved sitcoms, "I Love Lucy". In this video, we explore a lesser-known side of the classic show - the behind-the-scenes tensions and the personalities that drove them. While "I Love Lucy" offered an idyllic portrayal of 1950s America on-screen, the off-screen dynamics were far from perfect.
    Our spotlight shines on William Frawley, the talented actor behind the gruff yet lovable character, Fred Mertz. Notorious for his difficult behavior and unreasonable demands, Frawley's interactions with his fellow cast members were often tense, marked by conflict, and overshadowed by his struggles with alcoholism. Despite these challenges, Frawley's performance remains an integral part of the enduring charm of "I Love Lucy."
    Join us as we delve deep into Frawley's contentious relationships, his impact on the show, and how he was viewed by his fellow cast members. Discover how the off-screen drama contributed to the on-screen magic and the legacy of this iconic series. After discussing Frawley’s time on I Love Lucy, we’ll then move on to addressing how the actor managed to regain the dignity that he felt he had lost while appearing on that series in his follow-up roles. If you’re a fan of Frawley and I Love Lucy, this is one video that you won’t want to miss!

    William Frawley was an excellent actor. There was no bigger cheerleader for him on the set of "I Love Lucy" than the person of Lucille Ball herself. She always thought Frawley should've won some of those Outstanding Supporting Actor Emmys he was nominated for. He was dropped from "My Three Sons" after the 5th season due to the studio's insurance company that was unable to further insure him due to medical reasons. Frawley played his character flawlessly, one who was still a bit grumpy, yet with a kind and sensitive child-like heart on the show. Fred MacMurray loved him. Frawley passed away just five days after his 79th birthday, on March 3, 1966. He had gone to see a movie and, after walking out of the theater walking down the sidewalk, he fell to ground, suffering a fatal heart attack. He is sorely missed.

      I never saw that at all. Watch any time they have to hug or act affectionate - or heaven forbid, even KISS. It is strained and awkward. She can't stand the sight of him and not in a "comic" way, it was for real.

    • @johnpastirchak1053
      @johnpastirchak1053 11 месяцев назад

      @@lisalu910 -- There can be no denying the tensions between them, but it was friction triggered by personality clashes, period. The "strained and awkward" swings you saw on TV were scripted storylines persuasively delivered by two excellent actors. Ms Vance was said to be put off more by Frawley's well deserved reputation as a "drinker" who could be difficult on the set than by any off-color behavior on the "Lucy" show. For his part, Frawley saw the well accomplished Vivian as aloof and self absorbed. Regardless, rumors of disruptive clashes between the two were greatly exaggerated. Despite not liking each other, they worked well together. They were both consumate professionals.

    I heard a story that the network had once proposed a new series starring Vance and Frawley. SERIOUS money was on the table for both actors! But Vivian Vance would NOT have any part in another series with Frawley. She torpedoed that idea and sent it straight to the bottom! Frawley (supposedly) really needed the money and never forgave Vance for "ruining" his big chance.

    It is a shame that he had a bad temper and was hypersensitive to criticism. Everything in the video was not a surprise to me, as I have heard about his reputation throughout the years. He was an amazing actor with a lot of skill and depth, but his drinking problem and his temper followed him throughout his life. It is very sad that he has been gone now 57 years and his legendary drinking and bad temper still follows his reputation all these years. I always tell my family and friends if you want people to speak well about you when you pass, behave yourself during the time that you have.
    His pettiness to other actors that he felt did him wrong was well known in Hollywood. It didn't help that his co-star Vivian Vance had an ego, a temper as well, and didn't have a shut off valve with her mouth. Her disrespect for William Frawley was legendary. This is a woman by reputation of her 4 husbands she would not stop nagging them and trying to control them. 😮
    Here's a bit of trivia that a lot of people don't know, when he ended up getting sick while he was on My Three Sons and they had to replace him with William Demarest. Frawley and Demarest did not get along. It was reported that "William Frawley really enjoyed working on the show and did not want to leave. To make matters worse, he was replaced by William Demarest, whom he hated in real life."
    William Frawley was a wonderful actor with human flaws. He is still loved and missed by his fans

    .But the bigger issue was his drinking and in that Vance was not alone.
    Desi actually saved his job by telling Frawley of Vance's complaints and the fact that she was thinking about leavinng the show if something wasn't done about Frawley. Desi told him that he would only be allowed to continue on the show if he did not quit coming to the show drunk and no alcohol on the set.

    Frawley also only read what he had to do so he usually didn't know what the story was about. So sometimes he wouldn't get jokes or says lines the wrong way and they'd have to explain it to him. But it was a small price to pay to using a great guy.

    Fred & Ethel were completely awesome in 'I Love Lucy'. Destroying each other character in the show, and constantly creating verbal arguments strikes up between them, & cutting each other up big time with nasty jokes........wild crazy friction between the two of them always. Fred was so completely racist in so many ways . . . . . . . . . . They all played great parts in the show. Lucy and Desi were also excellent actors.

  • @roberttelarket4934

    Facts Verse you make many mistakes! Desi unbelievably knew his lines on one reading not Bill. The latter frequently asked the writers to cut his lines to as few as possible and that is the reason he probably knew his script so well!
    He was not the first choice as Fred Mertz. Lucy wanted her old radio friend Gale Gordon.
    Desi had a wonderful relationship with Bill. As well Lucy at least had no problems with him. Why would she?
    It was Vivian and Bill who hated each other!

    • @lisalu910
      @lisalu910 11 месяцев назад

      Gale Gordon would have been a great choice, to this day I wonder how the show would have been without fat, old Bill Frawley playing the part.

      @@lisalu910No! No! No! In retrospect we would never have known the character we(I) love to hate Fred Mertz! Fate chose the right Fred Frawley. Far better was my favorite loveable Ethel Mertz(Vivian Vance) over Barbara Pepper(drinking problem) Lucille Ball's choice!

THERE WAS LATER I LOVE LUCY EPISODE. IT WAS FANTASY AND FRED AND ETHEL PLAYED A 2 HEADED DRAGON SHE SAID HE WAS PASSING GAS IN THE COSTUME THAT MADE HER VOMIT. THAT WAS THE END.
