The Shin Mae Wa fills several roles. Maritime patrol,Search and Rescue, fisheries patrol, firefighting. I wish the US would adopt them for this role. We need a single, capable airframe. This is better suited to the task than the C-130J, I believe.
Yes, I wish we would adopt this aircraft. I miss the Martin Mars landing (wait, is it called "watering"?) in our local lake, would love to see one of these water here :-)
US Aviation defense contractors can easily make these. Aircraft carriers and the availability of runways globally available for the American military made these obsolete under current operating conditions. I am sure if war breaks out and the US loses their global runways as well as lose a couple of Carriers then manufactures will just start churning these out again.
This is true, but unfortunately I think what's holding it up is that there's no votes to be bought from buying this, which is why we're instead considering putting stupidly huge pontoons on the C-130J which will place its center of gravity somewhere just shy of cruising altitude, which will likely make being on water extremely uncomfortable for the crew and passengers. Hope they pack a lot of barf bags.
That Falcon 200 the US-2 is flying in formation with isn’t actually a Falcon 200. It’s one of Japan’s 26 Hawker 800’s that are used for search and rescue, with two other Hawker 800’s in service for flight inspection.
The US2 isn't a new airplane. It's been used by the Japanese for over ten years. Should the US get some? Definitely. The US is overly reliant on helicopters, which can't fly very far. Considering the distances that are needed to fly over the Pacific, it only makes sense to have an aircraft that can do so.
If there is a demand for lifesaving in the vast expanses of the U.S. where there are coastlines or rivers and lakes, then there may be a demand for that plane. A possible example would be after a natural disaster.

Calm water is helpful. Rough conditions on the ocean surface are more difficult. Flying boats are interesting. Know your coastlines and the leeward areas for landings in an emergency.
If you want an efficient, reliable, long range, flying boat you really need to see what Japan has to offer. Literally a century of being on the leading edge of the tech. Sadly, I'd be surprised if my current government showed the good sense to purchase these.
In the late 90s the Navy funded a design study to convert C-130 to float planes. It was a quick change kit that would attach floats like you see on float planed and another design that looked like a pumpkin seed. They would be attached at the landing gear with the normal wheels removed. It got as far as scale model testing and looked promising. It was determined that the Navy’s C-130s didn’t have the power needed and at the time they had no plans to buy the then new J model which had ~25% more takeoff power. Recently the Air Force has shown an interest in revising the program and they have the J model planes that would work. All the development work is done. I’m sure the interest in the US-2 is to just get an idea how they’re operated but not to buy them from the Japanese. We don’t do that.
These would make great mid ocean refueling tankers to with the ability to sit on the water and wait until the aircraft to be refueled were within range and then Climb to altitude ahead of time and hook up, it would certainly save fuel by not having to continuously orbit while waiting.
I could see these seaplanes being VERY useful in Coast Guard roles. Not only search but actually being able to perform rescues without having to wait for another asset to provide pickup. I know they wouldn't be able to land in every situation. But, it would still be possible in some situations that it is not currently. Also not every rescue at sea is a high stakes OMG the ship is sinking waves crashing over the decks incident. Sometimes its a this guy's having a medical issue and we need a medi-vac 150 miles out. And YES the sea that far out can be smooth enough for one of these to land. Been there. Seen it. Got the Pension for 20 years out doing that.
I did not know that a large scale sea plane still existed, let alone a modern one. I'm glad that Japan has refined seaplane technology. That 1300 horsepower compressor for boundary layer control is an impressive advancement. Looking into it's history, the US-2 is not 'brand new'. The first 'production' US-2 was built in 2009. But very few have been built. Japan only had 6 in 2018. It's unclear if any have been produced since. The U.S. Navy, Marines and Coast Guard could each use some of these.
There are many reasons to get this aircraft. Fight against wildfire is probably the most frequent and useful choice. Incidents of wildfires are on the rise everywhere.

I know no equipment American military money cannot buy in time of constant crises like now and ShinMaywa with ALTA, the defence equipment agency under Japanese MOD, will customise the seaplane to whatever your infiltration/recovery needs. That big water bird is the best of the kind in the world beyond your enemy’s preparedness.
The japanese were big on seaplanes during WW2, they actually kept this tradition. The US could do with some in case of conflict with china in the pacific.
Perfect plane for CSAR and maritime patrol. If it can drop water for fire fighting it can with modifications launch sonobouys ,ALCMS , torpedoes etc etc etc
Correct because it's the same company that made it, although they kept the H8K airframe and then attached C-130J AE2100S to it. If the Europeans want to get back to the flying boat, Market the solution is this restart production of Short Sunderland BV-238 BV-222 Wiking the engines will need to come from A400M
It’s very cool but remember seaplanes can’t land in higher sea states. Whereas an MV-22 can hover. It could still deploy rescue divers and a raft. Its range is barely 1/3 of the US-2 but the MV-22 could be aerial refueled. It also carries 4 more people than the US-2.
Glad to see the Japanese are keeping their flying boats in good order. I was always impressed by their WW2 versions, even if they were on the wrong side of that war... 🤣👍
We should have 1 or 2 per carrier battle group including lightening carrier battle groups . Something independent of the carrier battle group but capable of supporting the carrier battle group .
Isn’t the US2 the modern version of Kawasaki’s WW2 Emily - a deadly Navy flying boat that Allied fighters knew to avoid - it was even more deadly than the British Shorts Sunderland, on which it was based (Kym in Darwin).
The US-2 is so expensive primarily because it had such a low production run of only 8 units. Japan is negotiating with dozens more to be sold to India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Greece. Any of those going through would reduce the per-unit cost for the US.
No doubt a modern masterpiece from japanese aircraft industrial complex. Well tought out in great detail, awesome design and capabilities, in a fire - fighting mode and anti submarine warfare its just one of the best or the best design right now definitly can land on water, fill their tanks in fire bomber or patrol huge area in submarine warfare or patrol of the soberan waters of the country. That big water bird is the best of the kind in the world beyond your enemy’s preparedness.
Blohm & Voss made in Japan :-)
at first I thought it was some refurbished WW2 catalina,
but damn. Modern day flying boats are wild.
I say they bring back the PBY Catalina back into service because it does the exact thing the US-2 does
Wow! This plane is a life savers!
US2最高です👍
自衛隊の水上飛行艇は武器として売り込むのではなくて救助艇として売り込めば問題なく商売となります。きちっと分けて政府として後押しすべきである。
Awesome aircraft with boundary layer control, US could learn a lot from this...or licence build it to re establish a lost capability
it needs a wider side door!!! Other than that what a beautiful aircraft.
Emily lives on
Correct because it's the same company that made it, although they kept the H8K airframe and then attached C-130J AE2100S to it.
Need both
Glad to see the Japanese are keeping their flying boats in good order. I was always impressed by their WW2 versions, even if they were on the wrong side of that war...
🤣👍
That US-2 jet was not a Falcon 200, it was a BAE 125.
We should have 1 or 2 per carrier battle group including lightening carrier battle groups . Something independent of the carrier battle group but capable of supporting the carrier battle group .
The ad at right start of the vid is helping Gaza children from hunger😭
Isn’t the US2 the modern version of Kawasaki’s WW2 Emily - a deadly Navy flying boat that Allied fighters knew to avoid - it was even more deadly than the British Shorts Sunderland, on which it was based (Kym in Darwin).
Looks very similar for sure.
カワニシ飛行機とシンメイワ飛行機が作っている。しかしシンメイワは、カワニシが名前を変えたもので、同一の会社。同一の設計チームです。
¡¿Cuál "nuevo hidroavión"? ¡Es viejísimo! Está en servicio desde los años 80's.
Looks like WWII! Awesome
Amazing airplane
Good point that other guy made the USA should get some but they will eventually build their own better than most others
The US-2 is so expensive primarily because it had such a low production run of only 8 units. Japan is negotiating with dozens more to be sold to India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Greece. Any of those going through would reduce the per-unit cost for the US.

Catalina Aircraft: Stonks📈
Sea plane is amazing😍😱
No doubt a modern masterpiece from japanese aircraft industrial complex. Well tought out in great detail, awesome design and capabilities, in a fire - fighting mode and anti submarine warfare its just one of the best or the best design right now definitly can land on water, fill their tanks in fire bomber or patrol huge area in submarine warfare or patrol of the soberan waters of the country. Congratulations to Japan and the engineers who design this beautiful machine well tought out alot of thinking was put on this bird
The small twin jet is not Falcon, it's British Hawker.
nice to sea the jaoanese navy pilots continuing their tradition of white gloves. The japanese seaplane is a beautiful aircraft and it deserves a NATO callsign "Sea Dragon" . The Australian Navy should buy these Aircraft as well.
astig sana makuha ng pilipinas yan ❤❤
