The Old Allison Gearbox

- Before you start reading - this is probably one of the longest descriptions on youtube! i recomend reading up untill you see *** when i reccomend playnig the video and reading about the bus gearbox description.
The old allison Gearbox is found mainly on Dennis Darts, Optare Solos and Mercades varios, but can also be found on Routemasters and DAF SB120s. This videos only shows Solos and Darts
solos and varios have the same mercades engine and darts and SB120s have the same cummins (or somthing similar for the SB120) as theyre the only Allisons around where I live! The old Allison was replaced by the new allison in 2002 where but solos can be found with the old allison which are '55' regs.
The easiest way to tell an old allison is by how it gets confused between gears, whistles and in most cases wont change down gears untill the driver places his foot back down on the acelerator. Butmany buses with the old allison have lost there whistle so look for the other two signs if the whistle isnt obvious!
The is also what i call 'the special allison' which is found on what i call'the experemental Marshalls' as the marshalls whistle, get confused on gear changes BUT have the modern dart engine (not sure whats its called) and theyre gearbox does intelligant gearchanges - which the new allison does instead of the old.Incase you dont know, an intelligent gearchange is where the bus goes into fuel saing mode by changing gear quickly if the drivers foot is not fully down on the accelerator. These' experimental Marshalls are all 51,02 and 52 reg.

Heres a descrition of each bus in the video I've just put 'S' for a solo and a 'D' for a dart in brakets after the number plate.:
LT02 ZDC (D) - One of the experimental Marshalls. The driver was driving with her foot being less than 50% of the way down to avoid jolty gearchanges. So every gearchange was intelligant which let off a very deep whistle.
LT02 ZDD (D) - Driven at full throttel which made the 1st to 2nd gearchange very jolty. Also you can here in whistle in gear 3 (never got into gear 4 during the video) going down the gears, but no whistle in gaer two. Then an intelligant gearchange during the second acceleration.
LT02 ZDF (D) - A very jolty gearchange (worse than the others) where gear 3 barely exists.
LT02 ZDV (D) - A very nice sounding gearbox and engine - but gear 3 is very short and there is a large jolt before the second acceleration as the gearbox does not know whether to go into gears 1,2 or neutral.
X634 AKW (D) - A very quitely whistling gearbox. A humming noise is made as it changes down the gears.
X639 AKW (D) - Brilliant bus! The best souding Old allison i have ever come across! For a sound recording of this bus (no video) type its number plate into you tube.
S527 KFL (D) - This gearbox whistles down the gearbox as well as up - even X639 AKW does not do this. And by the way, If you ever get on S527 KFL dont expect it to whistle anymore! Ger changes went all jolty and no it dosent whistle.
V110 DCF (S) - Very whistly, and a slow down in gear two lets off an incrdibly loud whistle.
T446 HRV (D) - This bus had a differant gearbox in 2012 which didnt whistle and now its new second hand gearbox whistles but slips from 2nd in 3rd - which is bad when acellerating up a hill like in the video (especially as this bus isnt very powerful).
X185 BNH (D) - A very hellfire suoding gearbox. yet it has a large over rev in the 1st to 2nd gearchange and cant decide whether to be in geras 1,2 or neutral - a very nasty bang and jolt.
W283 EYG (S) - This gearbox slips through the gears but makes a very dreamy sound - for one of renowns solos slipping very badly through the gears, type in on youtube 'M84 NDW'
V197 ERG (D) - A very drunked sounding gearbox.
V110 DCF (S) - This video show a driver manualy selecting down the gears (3,2 and 1) and reversing.

most of cardiff buses have the slf have LT02 ZDC but gear boxes are mostly worn out now.
and the long darts have X634 AKW.
Correct. 4 speed AT545 replaced in most types by smarter 5 speed version after 2002, not sure what the model is called though
V197 ERG was a beast in the North East along with it's Mini and Super sisters.
Allison is the best with dart chassis
What 55 plate Solos have AT545s?!?! I need to see this!
RWL2012 I believe so.
I don't know why but the only good thing on LT02ZDF is the way it overrevs after first(sound-wise, other than that it's just buggered)
These LTO2 buses are ex first London

Why are all allison at545 gearboxs starting to lose there whistle does anyone know.
i prefer new one but i also like the whine on the old one
they need new gear fluid.

George Green Europe have quite a few nice ZFs, especially in Poland. Warsaw have ZF Urbino 15s with DAF engines, Germany is the world capital of ZFs with Citaros and Setras to suit your taste as well!

It sucks that we don't have those old Allisons in the North West anymore. We have plenty of Cummins Engine Allisons, although only one whistles, but none of the AT545s. Arriva used to have fucktons of them but they all unfortunately got scrapped
